To the Class of '72: For most of the members of the graduating class of 1972, much has transpired in your lives since the early 60’s when you first embarked on your formal education. It is my hope that your school has put forth a pro- gram and provided services which have made possible a legitimate educational opportunity. From this initial educational experience, which is now in its waning moments, it is our desire that this class will be prepared to move into a variety of directions de- pending on dreams, interests and talents. Regardless of which direction life holds for each of you, my last re- quest is never to discontinue your personal accumulation of knowledge and skills. Best wishes for a happy and successful future. Mr. Hanick, Principal To the Seniors—Class of '72: As our society gropes for solutions to the many problems facing it, the 1970's will likely be a turning point in our civilization. We will either discipline our- selves to solve the problems of our society, or face the consequences forever. As a graduating senior from PHS you are a part of the society that will be making the decisions of the 70's - are you capable and willing to make the necessary commit ments and sacrifices? Football game concessions and morning doughnut sales put FHA in the food business. An eight school rally held in Lodi was a fun and learning experience for many FHA members. My home town is NEU- L1STERNOHL, about 70 miles east of Cologne. Although it is about the same size, it is very different from Poynette. The whole village is only 7 years old. Everything was first planned and then built according to the plans. Thus it is supposed to be the most modern village in Germany. NEU-LISTERNOHL was built for the people of Listernohl who had to remove when a huge lake was built. A real big difference between Wisconsin and Germany is the density of the pop- ulation. In Germany, there are ten times as many people living on a square mile as in Wisconsin. School is very different in Germany. The students attend different types of schools according to their capabilities and their plans for the future. All courses are compulsory. We go to school 6 days a week, from 8:00 to 1:00, on Saturday to 11:30. Thus we have much more time in the afternoon, but we also get more assignments. In the afternoon everyone does what he pleases to, but there are no extracurricular activities. For things like that you have to join clubs which are independent from the schools. In Germany my favorite sport is judo and 1 have the brown belt. Besides Judo, I like swimming. Ping-pong and gymnastics. Most of the sports here were new for me and I had to learn a lot to catch up to the others. I went out for wrestling, which is in some ways similar to my judo, and I enjoyed it very much. All I can say so far about my stay is that it is a great experience, both, living in Poynette and being with AFS. In my life here I participate in another culture, another way of living which shows me more about America and helps me understand more than 1 could even by reading or hearing about it. AFS gives me the possibility of not only learning about the U. S. but also about other countries by meeting and talking frequently with other AFS students. Through both Poynette and AFS, I'm proud to say that I have found friends in the U.S. and all over the world. Winfried Zeppenfield wems od zm£ worm TOP ROW: Mrs. Hayes, advisor; D. Gorman, J. Under Coach Carelli's watchful eye, the Indians continued pro- gressing toward a first place spot in the Capitol Confer- ence. It took the Indians one weekend to defeat both Wa- terloo and Verona for sole ownership of first place. Next weekend the Indians were upset by Wisconsin Heights. After Christmas vacation the Indians came back to defeat McFarland and DeForest, but then to lose only to Verona on a last second shot. Wrestling, which is probably the most strenuous physical sport in high school athletics, came through its second year a bit more victorious for Poynette High than their rookie year had been. Coach Darin had a lot more boys out this year, so he naturally had a better basis to build his twelve-man varsity squad. The grapplers captured the first dual meet victory for Poynette in wrestling history, when they soundedly defeated Montello early in the season. Our foreign exchange student did extremely well on varsity grappling for third place in our tough confer- ence meet. Mark Larabee was elected team captain for the second straight year and did well also. Wrestling is a fast growing sport in high school, and Poynette seems to be growing right along with it. ZHS SWWQSKS In an ever-growing sport, Poynette’s golfers have seemed to decline in number. The golfers were expected to do an excellent job this year with one returning lettermen and two excellent prospects of last year's J. V. team. The Indians are under the watchful eye of Coach Dann. The Art Club with Mr. Gordon as advisor, has at- tracted many art students since its formation last year. The club sponsored a Beaux-Art Ball at Halloween time which was a great success. People came dressed in many interesting and sometimes peculiar costumes. A prize was given for the best costume which was a horse cos- tume worn by Larry Hebei and Gary Kaschinske. The Beatles were playing at the ball also, but in facsimile. The profits from the Beaux-Art Ball were used for an Art trip. MASTER ARTISTS OF TOMORROW WMA z you SSS IS STANDING: J. Patefield, M. As in past years, the 1971-1972 annual staff spent many hours and evenings of Mrs. Peterson's time making mats, taking pictures, and typing write-ups in order to produce the '72 edition of the Pauquette. Some thinking sessions may have resulted in minor hilarity or utter confusion, but after hours of practice, a technique was devised for producing enough pages to fill the deadlines. A truly educational experience, com- bined with a lighthearted reminiscence of 71-72, surely benefitted everyone who con- tributed their time and energy. Special recognition goes to the Co-editors—Kathy Waugh and Antonette Prochot, who did an especially fine job, and inspired anew the confused staff. WHA Z you Q£Z Advisor. SITTING: D. Hathaway. D. I wish to ex- tend my sincere thanks to my great staff, advisor, and al- so the photo club. The cooperation and help was really great to see when it was needed so badly to meet the pressing deadlines. They played for many events such as the dedica- tion at the game farm and of course numerous pep rallies and games. The public was entertained by Winter, Christmas and Spring concerts. Much talent was shown by the band as a whole and as individuals. P Ay nett e was very busy this year by putting on the district music festival. Everyone helped to make it a great one. MAKE HOUR : C. Under the direction of Mrs. LaFave however, there have been moments of glory. The first semester was climaxed by our annual Christmas Concert and the traditional singing of the Hallelujah Chorus . In the Spring of the year, we tackled the task of hosting the conference bands and choruses for the district music festival. After a year of anxious practice sessions, our final performance at Grad- uation was a memorable event. We're looking for bigger and better sounds next year. Kim OF MUSIC TOP ROW: B. Erstad, T. The Junior Class was quite proud of their pink jungle, the good crowd, and the overall success of the 1971 Junior Prom. Hey, Miss April isn't bad! Please pass the space food sticks. There goes the caboose!! Hey, now!!! Gee, it's too nice to be in school. HOMECOMING After the super-successful game, the dance began with the Grand March as the highlight of the evening. The drama season this year began with 3 one-act plays: Dope , The Death of the Hired Man , and The Laughing Ghost . For the first time this year tryouts were open to all classes instead of being restricted to freshmen, sophomore, or junior-senior plays. This way it is hoped that more students will gain experience from working with more experienced actors; and the plays will become more enriched. Dope” was directed by Mr. Harms. It was a contemporary play which dealt with drug addiction. Dope was selected from the three plays to go into sub-district competition, where it received an A . From there it went to the district at Whitewater, where it earned a B rating. This year Poynette was host for the sub-district competition. Plays from Poynette, Lodi, Waunakee, Waterloo, and McFarland were presented on our stage to compete for A ratings. ZMSSPJAMS Dope BACK ROW: P. Vangsnes, K. Sopha, D. Palmer, D. Saager, B. The whole town is excited about Larry Benson's homecoming, because Larry had been reported missing in action on some distant battlefield over three years ago. Larry s father left his family to shift for themselves, then returns for the boy's homecoming, claiming it's his right to be there... and so the plot unwinds for the dramatic three-act play, put on by the Poynette High School Drama Department. The play centered around Harvey, a six-foot, invisible rabbit, who was the embarrassment of all who knew him, except Elwood Dowd. Elwood was the only one who could see Harvey and took him everywhere he went, whether it was to a big so- cial tea being put on by his sister Veta Simmons, or just to the Fourth Avenue Firehouse to play pinochle. Veta was almost at her wits end trying to keep all of her high society friends from learning about Elwood's strange friend. In an attempt to put Elwood in a sanitarium, she ends up there herself! When the situation is finally righted, the psychiatrist offers a foolproof alternative. He claims that the problem of Elwood's could be solved by one injection of a new drug. Veta consents and at the last minute is per- suaded by a cab driver to call off the injection and ac- cept the dual of Elwood and Harvey the 6-foot Pooka. We, the Senior Class, are at the end of an Era. Our four years at P. H. S. cotffy. best be described as major years of change. As Freshmen we entered with a regular ' eight-hour class schedule, our Sophomore year we experienced a trial Modular Sched- uling, as Juniors a six-day cycle and as Seniors a work-study program. The structure of our days were not all that was altered. Our class seemed al- ways to be involved in new requirements in curriculum. Remember U. S. History, two years of World History, and Political Science? This year's credits for Music and Physical Education increased the amount needed for graduation. Not only changes in requirements have taken place, but vast changes in courses have been offered. Courses with new relevance, like Minority Groups and mini-courses, such as: Auto Mechanics. More and more classes have beer, offered in semesters so that the student can freely choose what interests him. These four years have beenfull of surprises and sometimes heated discussions. Controversy over dress and hair length ended with the abolition of the dress code. Ho- nor Study hall acquired a Commons with food machines, restrictions on time spent there and the sacred Commons Pass. The students have really finally realized their power to change things in P. H. S. or to suggest improvements. A student now sits with the School Board because of stu- dents who persued the issue and fought for something they felt was important. Student petitions have made the administration aware of needs the students have. We hope that Poynette High continues to be as progressive as it has been in the past four years so that students can benefit to the fullest. As we look at what the next year offers, we can only see Poynette as a growing school. At the same time, we hope that those who now enjoy the freedom in Poynette High realize how many more rights we have acquired and how important it is to keep them. For these reasons, we are the end of an era, because we remember a day when a student's day was structured for him and we now see and enjoy a relaxed freedom of choice. Thus times do shift; each thing his turn does hold; New things succeed, as former things grow old. --Herrick-- Ceremonies for Candlemas Eve ■ -• F%' ■V • — ' f • ' ,1- . , qf'X v • li .Vx i f v ;%? • it «' N 'V-. . • •,V.‘ i v v ♦ • 't’X',- v V ■ ky %J v 7 i • Ok rv . .
