HD •« Sp8 Dedication We, the senior class of 1967, proudly dedicate the 1967 Pauquette to the memory of Annette Rouse, whose kind understanding and outgoing personality lighted the lives of all who knew her. In her three years in Poynette High School, Annette was a member of the National Honor Society and was active in Forensics, Student Council, Pep Club, Latin Club, Chorus, Newspaper staff, and countless other extra-curricular activities. A talented actress, she took part in the yearly one-act plays, and played the unforgettable Aunt Julia in the Junior-Senior three-act comedy, “Mr. Pirn Passes By.” We miss her. Her quick wit and her infectious laughter are gone. But we are grateftil to have known her. She will live forever in the hearts of her many friends. Administration Administrators Class of 1967: Your class has experienced many changes in Poynette High School during your four years of attendance. Fron the “old red castle’ to a new high school building represented quite a change in physical facilities. Curriculum changes have been num- erous. The addition of Spanish, Industrial Arts, Speech, Art, Conservation, and English Comp to the course of study has given greater breadth to your education. As you look to the future, “change will seem to be the password for your very existence. We would caution you to always examine “changes ; don't accept and pro- mote “change purely for change sake. Retain what is good from tradition, but don't Sincerely, let tradition rule your life!!! School Board SEATED: Kermit Halvorsen, Harold Fisk, Mrs. Ir- vin Lothe, Ronald Caldwell. We were privileged to have in our class Poynette's second foreign exchange stu- dent, Renate Wirnsberger, from Austria. Senior Day at the A W stand was a success, and our annual Senior magazine sales proved very profitable to us. As a reward for the girls' outstanding salesmanship, the boys sponsored a swimming party for the Senior class. The year whizzed by, and, in our last few weeks as students of Poynette High, we found ourselves caught up in a whirlwind of pre-graduation activities, including a class trip to Chicago. Almost too soon, the big day arrived. On June 1st, we proudly received our di- plomas, and officially ended our high school days. ROW ONE, Left to Right: J. Olson, S. Youngs, C. Ray, J. Harrison, M. ROW THREE; Being the first group of students to have the privilege of completing two years of Junior High be- fore becoming freshman, we didn't think we were as green as previous freshmen. Most of us were glad to have initiation post- poned for a week, but we found out it wasn't as bad as we thought it would be. Stamp Out Verona was the theme for our Homecoming float: it received second place. The freshman representatives for court were Debbie Shaw and Ricky Klemp. A cast of seven freshmen presented a comedy play, Hercule's Night Out. We now have an enrollment of seventy-eight members in the freshman class; the largest to have entered Poynette High School. Our AFS'er Dear students and faculty in P. H. S., Thank you for letting me be a part of your American 1966 67 school year, and for everything you have done for me. Your kindness, helpfulness, and surprises have been greatly appreciated. I can assure you that you have reached the aim of giving me a second beloved town, school, and home. My town in Austria has a population of 40, 000, and about 900 students attend our high school. Now you will ask yourself if there are so few children. No, but high school is not a must in Austria. Only a special number of children are able to attend high school. They must pass examinations which are quite difficult. The other children attend secondary schools after four years of elementary school. High school time lasts from the fifth through the thirteenth grades. School starts on September 15th and lasts until July 10th. We have a two-week vacation at Christmas, one week at Easter, and three days at Pentecost. We get our report cards three times a year-one before each of these vacations. We go to school from eight o'clock in the morning until one or two o’clock in the afternoon. Our classes last 50 minutes, and between them we have breaks that last from five to fifteen minutes. At this time we must leave the room. We have no noon hour and no study halls. The teachers move from class to class, but we stay in the same room all day except when we have geography and biology. Eleven subjects are required in my school, and then you can also take electives. The required subjects are religion, German, English or French, Latin, history, geography, biology, physics, math, music or painting, and physical education. We don’t have all of these subjects every day. For elec- tives, we have chorus, concert band, and world literature. You may also take English and French, and music and painting, using one as a required course and one as an elective. We have only five grades-one, two, three, four, and five. One is the top grade, and if you receive two fives, you will have to take a repeating examination of that subject before the beginning of the next school year. If you don't pass it, you then must repeat the whole year. There are a lot of differences between American and Austrian schools, but I love them both. One of the things I enjoy very much here in America is your sports. The participation in school spirit gave great excitement to your games. I am grateful'to all the people who have made me feel welcome at P. H. S. Even when I will be more than a thousand miles away, the memories of my experiences in a small community in America will never let me forget you. Visitors From Peru ELIO AND MIGUEL This year P. H. S. has two students from Peru who are seniors. They are Elio Galessio and Miguel Ramirez. Elio comes to us from Lima, Peru. He is here to learn English, and to go on and study architecture at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Elio likes school here in Poynette. He thinks the people here are very nice, and he has never felt disappointed here this summer; he said he was quite homesick, but after school started he lost his homesickness. The dances and games have been en- joyable for him. School in Poynette, he said, has brought many new experiences and new friends for him. He says that his English has improved at least 50 percent. After Elio goes home to Peru, he said his goal is to help people progress through the knowledge he has gained here. Miguel’s hometown is Arequipa, Peru. He is here to learn English, and to see how the teaching is in America. He is going on to the University of Wisconsin next year to study physics engineering. Miguel likes school here; he says the kids and teachers are very nice and kind to him. He likes the specialized teaching and feels this should be considered as great progress in education in relation to the rest of the world. Miguel said he is happy here. His best day was when he could understand Mr. Noble's fast talking. His favorite hot lunch food is barbecue. He thinks that the Poynette community has a pretty and a wonderful school, and he is grateful to all who have helped him here. ROW ONE: D. Tuggle, L, Waugh, M. Morse, S. Anderson, M, Moll, B. FHA stands for Future Homemakers of America--an incorporated non-profit youth organization. The main goal is learning to live better today in order that the homemaking pupils' lives and those of their families may be better tomorrow. Every year, in the Spring, the FHA has a Mother and Daughter Banquet. At this time, the officers who were elected for the coming year are orientated. Any pupil enrolled in the secondary school who is taking or has taken a homemaking course in junior or senior high school may become a member. ROW ONE: J. Dowdell, H. Pache, R. Kutz, A. Gunderson, T. Other highlights of the year were an exchange concert with Lodi, winter and spring concerts, a Solo-Ensemble contest in April, and the annual band contest in May. Speech has always been the most important means of communication. Forensics helps a student develop the speaking talents that he already has, but might not know about. If a student feels that there is a particular field in speaking in which he can best express himself, we encourage him to go into forensics and develop those talents. Each student who gets to the state meet and earns an A receives a medal of a reward. Bobbi Hahn has gone to state twice and received the well-deserved medal of a speaking champion. To be a fully prepared adult, you have to be able to express your ideas, and forensics trains a person to express his views plainly and logically. We hope to see more students out next year. Other tasks per- formed are shelving of books, reading of shelves, assembling materials for teacher requests, mending of books, typing of book cards, preparing books and materials for circulation, helping to file daily circulation records, filing cards in rhe card catalog, typing overdue lists, and helping to prepare book displays. Each fall our students participate in student-assistant workshops at Oshkosh where they discuss important activities of the library and meet other students-librarians. Last summer the first Student-Library Assistants workshop was held at the University of Wisconsin where the students decided to form a Student Library Association of Wisconsin. Student-librarians of Poynerte High School have joined the state organization and will have representation at rhe Annual Spring Convention. National Honor Society ROW ONE: M. Klaila, S. Crawford, L. The Junior-Senior class play this year, Riders to the Sea , was a drama which took place on the coast of Ireland during the early 1800's. The plot is centered around a family who has lost many of its male members to the sea. The tragedy comes when the final son is drowned. The play got an A rating at the locals, and a B rating at district, due largely to the fine direction of Mrs. Kuhlman. The Sophomore class presented the play, If Boys Wore Skirts. This humorous play depicted the situation wher.e it was natural for girls to wear slacks, and for boys to wear skirts. The cast enjoyed performing the play under the excellent direction of Mrs. Calkins. The Freshman one-act play, Hercules' Night Out, was a hilarious comedy de picting a thirteen-year-old boy who spends his first night away from home with his friend. During the night, Hercules decided he is scared, he is sick, he can't sleep, and he wants to go home. Of all the times for this to happen, it would be the night Mr. Maxwell is trying to balance his books. The fun starts when the family tries everything td lull Hercules to sleep. A great job done by both cast and director. Miss Schmallenberg, on their first production. Three Act ROW ONE: Mr. Keys, director: B. Hahn, S. Parpart, J. Caldwell, K. Purves. ROW TWO: D. Hafner, L. Mason, R. Robinson, L. Webster, D. Smith, J. Bisbee. ABSENT: D. Stoltenberg. On November 29th and 30th, the Junior and Senior Classes presented Dylan Thomas's UNDER MILK WOOD. Laughter, poetry, song, arguments, gossip, and jeers filled the stage as the brilliantly acted play entertained some of the town's citizens and students. Call it what you will: a reading, a stage poem, or a play for voices. Whatever you call it, UNDER MILK WOOD is a beautifully funny and poignant play. Its plot is simple: the audience is allowed to go on a midnight-to-midnight prowl of a smug and ingrown Welsh fishing village, and into the intimate lives of its inhabitants. With each actor playing several parts, the audience is called upon to use its imagination with a stage with no scenery and actors with only street clothes, and to visualize the town and its looney but embarassingly everyday characters that we all know so well: the little sissy boy afraid of girls, the gossipping postman's wife, the lunatic who eats out of a dog dish, the spotless widow and her two dead henpecked husbands, the poetic reverend, the young school teacher eager for a husband, the taunting little schoolgirl, the hysterical butcher's wife, the town drunkard, the nagging and venomous wife, and wise old blind man who sees all. These are just a few. And those attending were rewarded with a delightful evening of hilarious comedy and familiar scenes of village life.
