JAMES WOLTERS President LOIS BAERWOLF Treasurer MARGARET ANN RISGAARD Secretary DARWIN CALKINS Vice-President On September 4, 1951, forty-two recruits came up the gang plank of the ship “Poy- nette” to cross the Sea of Education. We, each, were to do our part to keep the ship for- ward moving for the next four years. The first person we met was our Captain, Harry Polzer, and our Rear Admiral, Milton Rewey and Vice Admiral, Evelyn Haas. The Re- cruits who were on board were: Deolores Schrab Carol Lindemann Karen Grinde Mary Gundlach Donna Wolff Wilberta Greenfield Shirley McFarlane Audrey Highley Marie Jungemann Paul Black Merwyn Bauer James Tessman Marvin Hebei Donovan Waugh Walter Lindner Harland Hebei Donald Tomczak Dean Larson Robert Vogts Gordon Radewan Shirley Nelson Sandra Wild Donna Eichorst Kenlyn Stewart Agnes Teeter Margaret Risgaard Dawn Teeter Lois Baerwolf Joan Schutz Inez Anderson Darwin Calkins Dale Holzman Richard Smith James Wolter William MacLeish Donovan Eichorst Paul Shaw Earl Bilkey Raymond Redell Marvin Puttkammer Jerry Bell Anita Bender During the year, Jerry Bell went ashore, and Charles Judd from Chicago was brought aboard when his row boat drifted by our ship. Donovan Waugh, Earl Bilkey, Karen Grinde, and Marvin Puttkammer were promoted to a higher rank. They were Navigator Donovan, Engineer officer Earl, Communications officer, Karen, and Damage Control officer Marvin. In May, 1952 our ship hit a sand bar near Devil’s Lake, so we went ashore for a day’s picnic and a jaunt around the lake. So on May 28, our Captain came to us and said, because we were such obedient re- cruits we could have a three months’ furlough. On September 2, 1952 we boarded the ship again with the same Captain, but new Rear and Vice Admirals—Robert Gollmar and Roger Trost. The same crew came aboard with two additions, Joyce Brown and Ramona Snowden. Delores Schrab went aboard the ship to Portage. During the year, Inez Anderson, Harland Hebei, Walter Lidner, and Gordon Radewan decided that sailing wasn’t for them so they went ashore, never to re- turn. Four new promotions were granted--Marvin Hebei, Navigator; Bill MacLeish, Engineer officer; Shirley McFarlane, Communication officer; and Carol Lindemann, Damage Control officer. No matter where you may be, salesmen will find you. Thus it was, that we were all persuaded to buy 1955 class rings. Again, we were due for a little rest from our hard labors and were given another three months’ furlough, starting May 20, 1953. By September 8, 1953 our furlough had come to an end, and 37 recruits walked up the gang plank and were about to start their busiest year. We boarded the ship Poynette” to meet a new Captain, George Blanchard. Jeanne Lippert and tom Nicholson were Rear and Vice Admirals. Looking over the log we noticed that Carol Lindemann hadn’t gotten aboard the ship “Poynette.” During the summer Carol had boarded a New ship and sailed to Missouri. This year there were new promotions--Earl Bilkey, Paul Black, Anita Bender, and Mary Gundlach. During the year, our Vice Admiral boarded a ship for Fort Leonard Wood, and later France. Our Rear Admiral left the ship for Madison. Mr. Hobba was promoted to Vice Admiral, and continued on the journey with us. We docked for a few minutes and picked up some first-class packages, which con- tained our class rings. On April 22 and 23, 1954 our ship launched and became a Show Boat. For it was then that we presented our Junior Class Play, “A DATE WITH JUDY.’’ Class History Continued The biggest event of our Junior year, as it is for all the crews that board this ship for four years, was the Junior Prom. The theme chosen for the event was CAR- OUSEL. It was held April 30, 1954 with Bill MacLeish and Lois Ann Baerwolf reigning as King and Queen. We had Billy Hamilton and Denise Teeter brought aboard to be our miniature king and queen. Everyone worked hard to make it a success, and everyone will agree it was. Then, again, on May 28, 1954 we went ashore for our last furlough before we were to be discharged. On August 30, 1954 we threw our duffel bags over our shoulders and came up the gang plank of the Poynette” for the last time. We met the same Captain, George Blanchard; however, we had a new Rear Ad- miral, Myrtle Peterson and the same Vice Admiral, Walter Hobba. The crew of 37 came aboard for new assignments of duties. The first to get their promotions were: Jim Wolters, Navigator; Darwin Calkins, Engineer Officer; Margaret Ann Risgaard, Communication Officer; Lois Baerwolf, Damage Control Officer. We got the presses rolling and printed our own school paper. We thought that our under seamen and people on shore would like to know all of the news aboard ship and so we started the “Warhoop.” Our next big event took place September 28 when we went ashore and boarded a bus for Madison to have our pictures taken at Reierson’s Studio. After boarding our ship again, our next event was Football Homecoming October 8, 1954, with Queen, Margaret Ann Risgaard and King, Darwin Calkins. Together with the class of ’54 we purchased a juke-box. On October 29 and 30 some of the crew members and some members of neigh- boring undershipmen joined forces and put on four one-act plays. January 22, 1955 we held our Senior Dance, which put us in a wintery mood as it was called a Marshmallow World. Reigning as King was Donovan Eichorst and Queen, Sandra Wild. February 18, 1955 we held our Basketball Homecoming with King, Don Tomczak and Queen, Donna Wolff, reigning over the dance. In April, our ship again anchored and became a Show Boat, and the Seniors spon- sored THE ROBE. On Sunday, May 15, the last week of our journey began with our Baccalaureate service. • On May 18, we came together to reminisce our journey over the Sea of Education. On May 20, we met as a group for the last time. We all received our honorable discharge papers, and as we stood on shore we waved good-bye to the good ship Poy- nette,’’ and to all of the fond memories the four year cruise had left with us to cherish now and forever.
