In Home Ec this year the kids made quilts, stuffed animals, and a large variety of things. They made cookies for the different activities that took place during the year. A large por- tion of the year was spent on making things. At the end of the year, the Barbeque was told by all to be a success. In P. . this year the students learned how to play football, basketball, and baseball. The students had fun running on the nature trail and trying to master gymnastics. 10 Home Ec. Page 10. As you can see they are having quite a funky time. Jodi Allred and Debbi Butler who were Santa's helpers assisted Nancy Smith who was Santa this year. No discrimination in the Senior class, that's for sure! The Senior class decorated the Christmas tree, hall lights and all the other classy things that go with a classy Christmas. Classy is the Senior's middle name. Page 30. (Top left) This charming lad is the Senior class advisor, Mr. Marty St atlard, having one of his, shallwe say, better days. Thank-you who ever you are for making the class of nineteen hundred and seventy-nine's Senior year the toughest that they have ever had. Most of all the Senior class would like to congratulate you for mov- ing their graduation date ahead. Many times when in class the Seniors have thought of you and wondered who you are and what it would have been like if you wouldn't have taken the matter into your own hands. Surely the school would have burned in time, without your help. Couldn't you have gotten your revenge some other way? Thank- you again for all the trouble and heart ache that you have caused many of us. Facing Page (Top) The graduating class of nineteen hundred and seventy-nine. During the year various bingos, dances, and movies boosted their budget. Two people went to SWOCC for the Math contest, Kimberly Altenbach and Roger Bessey. Roger tied for the top score in the High School. Also, half of the class attended for typing. Overall, the Sophomores had an active year and hope that by the time they are Seniors, every class will be as active. Page 40. (Right bottom) Frankie Fedor, Advisor. Page 4!. Also, we painted the rock and made the bonfire which were both fun. We had a couple of movies, bake sales and bingos. We had a good time and were pretty carefree. We have made almost $400.00. We lost a boy to Paisley, he was a good friend and athlete, this was Dallas Butler, but for Dallas's place, we gained At Wilson. We will still miss Dallas. All the classes got out and did some- thing. The parade was very exciting, filled with decorative floats. The 7th graders dressed up as loggers and paraded in front. That night the dummy made by the 8th grade was set on fire and burned. Page 48: Mr. Football, Mike Shuey crowning the Queen Debi Butler. Homecoming 49 Christinas MORE CHRISTMAS FUN Christmas is a time for giving. The Christmas Program started off the festivities. The Elementary grades sang songs and gave skits about Christmas. The next day the High School held their Christmas party. Debi Butler, Jodi Allred, and Candy Warrick helped Santa hand out the gifts. Afterwards re- freshments were provided for students and faculty. Mother's Tea, as we all used to know it, has changed it's name to Parents Night. The name change was decided so that it would include everybody, Dads, Kids, and Grandpas. The Theme this year was Forever in Blue Jeans''. It was picked because kids will probably be forever in blue jeans. The colors were the colors of the rainbow, blues, yellows, reds and greens. The entertainment was very good this year with everything from singing to a play. Page 53. (Top right) Kayleen Hofess accompanying Debbi Butler. This event, surprising enough, included all the Seniors and their advisor. The meal included steaks which were prepared by the Timber Line. Mr. Marty Stallard made a speech and everyone toasted the well being of each other. The only Juniors that were invited were Perry Grabowski and Jodi Allred, for reasons we all know. Debbii Butler passed the colors down to Jodi Allred after the feast. Mrs. Gloria Quilhaugh made a cake decorated with roses for the Seniors. (Top) The Seniors chowing down. Banquet 55 56 Senior Ball Senior Ball SENIORS HAVE A BALL This year's theme was Time Has Come Again. The Seniors decorated in yellow, orange, and blue, with ocean scenery, and palm trees. The dance started at 9:00 p.m. and ended at 1:00 a.m. The band was Tymepiece which was fairly good, but as every dance goes, we still enjoyed them. The Seniors stayed up till 11:00p.m. Friday night to finish decorating for the ball. Page 56. Debi Butler and Kevin Morgan at the Senior Ball. Page 57. Senior Ball 57 Foreign Exchange Student Alvaro Quintana was the Foreign Exchange student this year. Alvaro is from Brazil and came to live with the Stevens family. When Alvaro first came to Powers all the girls went wild, but after awhile things started to settle down. Alvaro mixed well with the students at Powers and became active in sports. He played basketball which was quite funny to watch, and soon had the game under control. Explaining things to Alvaro was another ex- perience that will not soon be forgotten. As the year progressed he became better in speaking and learning the English language. Alvaro had quite a year here at P.H.S., and will not forget all the friends he has made or the experiences he has had in the States. Maybe Alvaro will come back to the U.S. in the future and visit the friends he has made and the little town of Powers. (Top right) Alvaro Quintana before graduation. (Below) Alvaro wondering what will happen next? 58 Alvaro Divider 59 Football BIG BUILD UP This years Powers High football team had many new starters. They had some trouble winning, but never gave up. These young men put everything they had into the games. However, with beginners it's hard to learn and know everything about football. Paul Wesockes, coach, and Raye Byrne, assistant coach, helped out a great deal, teaching and showing new ideas. We are looking forward to seeing this young team next year and wishing them a better year. Page 60. (Top right) Team waiting for the big kick! Flag football was an exciting experience for the Wolf pack during the 1978-1979 school year. The Wolfpack had a very good season ending up with the best record in the league. They had 3 wins and 1 loss. Phil Shellabarger, top scorer with 24 points; Mike AI ten bach, 22; Steve Fry, 12; Robert Frye, 6; Tony Monaco, 4; Jeff Johnson, 2; and Glen Fry with 2 points. The flag football team mem- bers are Chris Wassman, Robert Frye, Glen Fry, Tony Monaco, Shari Kalb, Rhonda Frye, Steve Fry, Mike Altenbach, Ed Whitman, Phil Shellabarger, Mark Nightingale, Jeff Johnson, and John Wood. The Wolfpack was coached by Kerry Quilhaugh and Marty Stallard. 62 Flog Football Volleyball Who Needs Success; It Was Sun! This year the volleyball team was burdened with the problem of having no gym to prac- tice or play in. Many of the games were played away at the homes of the opponents. When the fire damage was taken care of, the first home game was scheduled and a fairly large turn out was there to cheer on the team. The Cruiser staff would like to honor these girls for staying with it when the times were a little rough. (Top left) Coach Mary Rector and Sherri Looney. Volleyball 63 Basketball WORKING HARD PAYS OFF As we all know, throughout the season the varsity basketball team practiced every night after school, working for a winning team. However, it wasn't all work and no play, they had their times! Marty Stallard, this year's coach, worked hard showing new plays to the boys. At the end of the year some of the lettermen played donkey basketball with the staff. This was their opportunity to get back at their coach. (Top left) Alvaro Quintana giving an opponent a hard time. The 1978-79 edition of Powers High School basketball team was a team which was strong on desire but short on experience. Because of this fact, our team record, 8 wins and 13 losses, won't go down as one of the most successful in P.H.S. history. Returning next year will be 9 of 12 varsity members. Of these 9, five received starting assignments sometime during the season. The highlights of the sea- son were 34 to 33 victory over league tournament champion Butte Falls and win- ning 5 of our last 6 league games. The Cruisers look for another good year in 1980 with the continued desire of these young athletes and their acquired experience. But, will miss the fine play of two fine Seniors, Scott Walker and Alvaro Quintana. Baskotball 69 Girls Basketball Dynamite Comes In Sma 11 Packages This year the girls basketball team gave it their best shot with 4 wins and 9 losses. The Cruiserettes had experience in their favor and they used it to the best of their ability. Coach Mary Rector seemed to enjoy the per- sonalities and efforts from the girls and so did the crowd.
