Each senior class has done its job efficiently. For this, I give my thanks. As a class you will soon be scattered to all ends of the earth. Some of you will be continuing your education next fall by entering college. Some of you will be starting your military service. Still others will be entering busi- ness and trade fields. He gained 831 yards rushing and pass receiving. In basketball he was a starter on the varsity team which won 15 games and lost 7 games. The team finished second in district. As a sophomore he played halfback on offense, and as a linebacker on defense. He gained 485 yards rushing and 706 yards receiving. He was a unanimous choice by the Trico League for the All-Conference team during his junior year in football. As a senior Marty started in football on both the offensive and defensive team for the fourth year. He was elected to the All-Conference team for the third year. He was voted by his team- mates as the outstanding offensive player. Marvelous Marty led the Powers team to the State B championship and a 23-0 record. He was unanimously chosen for the All-State team. He led the team in rebounding, shooting, and points scored. He also received a certificate for honorable mention on a nation-wide High School All-American Team. He was voted as the Most Valuable Player by his teammates. In track Marty received a trophy for scoring the most points throughout the season. He led the Powers tracksters to second place at State. Through the season Marty broke a district and school record in the 880 yard run and helped set district and school records in the mile relay. He also broke school records in the javelin, high jump, and the 440 yard dash. His success as a great athlete and team leader can be attributed to not only his athletic ability, but also to a tremendous competitive desire and a great attitude. 48 JUNIOR PROM %r The theme for the Junior Prom was The Days of Wine and Roses. Other team members who ran at District and State included Marty Stallard (senior), Trenton Brietenbucher (junior), Steve Farmer (sophomore), and Russ Hill (freshman). The Cruisers finished with a 7 win, 1 loss, and 1 tie record while placing second in District 4 B to the State Champions from Harrisburg. The season started on a winning note as we trounced Monroe on their home grounds by a 26-0 count. The feature of the game was a 99-yard touchdown run by All- State halfback Marty Stallard. In the second half of the year the Cruisers lost their only game 6-0 to Harrisburg after outplaying the Eagles for 3 l 2 quarters. The Powers team really jelled in the third game of the year as we came back from a 19-12 deficit to tie McKenzie at 19-19 on an outstanding play of the defense unit and the running of All-Conference halfback Nick Stallard. The 1966 football machine then rolled to 6 con- secutive victories, downing Crow at home by a 25-6 count while Powers defense led by All-Con- ference linebacker Doug Wyland and All-Confer- ence tackle Henry Elder held the undefeated and much hated Crow Cougars to just 48 yard rushing while Powers amassed 266 yards. The next game was the annual Homecoming game against Oakland which was won by the hopped up Cruisers 59-0 in an awesome offensive show. The Powers team then whopped Lowell 39-0, Glendale 20-0 and Yoncalla 19-0 before edging the traditional rivals from Elkton in a hard-fought 8-7 game. The Cruisers placed 5 men on the All-Confer- ence team. Ray Milojevich (end), and Marty Stallard (halfback), were named to the offensive first team; and Doug Wyland (linebacker), Henry Elder (tackle), and Nick Stallard (end) were named to the defensive first team. Other Cruisers cited for good play were Dave Rolfe (fullback), Tom Shorb (quarterback), and Jake Caughell (defensive halfback). Marty Stallard was voted Most Valuable Offense player by his teammates and was selected to the state Shrine team. Doug Wyland was selected as a state Shrine team alternate and voted most valuable defense player by his teammates. Other honors went to Nick Stallard, who was voted most improved and to Dave Rolfe and Tom Shorb who were named Co-Captains for the 1967 season. 61 The outstanding Cruiser team are, left to right: Dan Evers, Jay Milojevich, Nick Stallard, Jake Caughell, Henry Elder, Ray Milojevich, Mike Pinson, Marty Stallard, Dave Rolfe, Tom Shorb. The 1966-67 Basketball season was the best ever in Powers’ history, winning 20 straight games and then sweeping through the State tournament in 3 games for an undefeated 23-0 season and the State championship. The Powers team was one of the most well-balanced teams in ”B” history and raced to victories all season by using a press and fast break style of attack. The players were in excellent physical shape and had a winning attitude that made them champions. The Powers ”5” was never out rebounded and prided itself on defense and hustle. The offensive attack featured a passing game that was unselfish and the players were very adapt at hitting the open man. The only close game of the year came in the season opener with the Myrtle Point Bobcats who held a 38-20 half-time lead before falling to Cruiser pressure to lose 69-62. The practice games with Myrtle Point, Pacific, and Marshfield J. V. got us ready for the league trials. The Powers attack knocked over 14 straight league opponents while going over 100 points four times. The highlight of the league games was a 127-41 victory over C. B. A. which was a school record for points scored and the state high for points of the season. The powerful Powers team then went into the state tourney at Pendleton against the Pilot Rock Rockets and whipped them 80-54 in the tourney’s opening game. In the second game of the tourney Powers met Corbett, who had a 23-0 record, and were ranked 1st in some polls. The Cruisers pressed and ran to a 71-49 victory and left only one opponent in the way of a perfect season and a State championship. The Wallowa Cougars fell to Powers in the final game, and Powers had the crown and the 1st place trophy. The Cruisers placed Jake Caughell on the All-State 2nd team. Ray Milojevich and Marty Stallard (unanimous) on the All-State 1st team. The Cruisers voted their teammates several honors at the end of the season: Nick Stallard as Most Improved Player, Dave Rolfe for the Hustle award, and Marty Stallard as the Most Valuable Player. The Cruisers look for another good year in 1968 with 7 of the 1st eleven players coming back, but they will miss the play of 4 fine seniors: Marty Stallard, Jake Caughell, Henry Elder, and Mike Pinson. 62 Nick Stallard shoots a long one.
