The Homecoming game was an event for the alumni and the 1965 football team. The Cruisers ran over and passed through the Lowell Red Devils for a 40-0 victory. The team members have seen plenty of action this year and all turned in a fine performance for the Homecom- ing game. Football Summary 1965 The 1965 Football Season began on a disappointing note as Powers fell to Harrisburg, 18-7, in the home opener. The Cruisers came through to win over McKenzie, 9-0, in a game featuring the first field goal by Powers, a 21-yard effort by Tom Rauch. The third game was against Crow, the District Champions, and Powers was defeated, 25-12. The Cruisers came back to win the next five games by good margins with the key game being a 20-7 victory over Oakland, the defending State Champions and undefeated in two years. The Cruisers won the second place trophy and finished with a 7 won, 2 lost record. The Cruisers were led by Tom Rauch, All-Conference Quarterback and winner of the Most Valuable Offense Award. Rick Taylor, All-Conference End, won the Most Valuable Defense Award. George Hayes, tackle, and Dale Hill, end, also made the All-Conference Team. Alan Lundy was voted the Most Improved Player by his teammates. Chosen to lead the 1966 team are Co-Captains Jake Caughell, end, and Marty Stallard, All-Conference Halfback. 56 BACK ROW, L to R: A. CROSS COUNTRY SUMMARY The Powers Cross Country Team did very well this year. John Fry and Stan Bern were the only two members who were able to work out regularly. The other members, Marty Stallard, Dale Hill, and Henry Elder, doubled as dis- tance men and football players. The Cruisers defeated Myrtle Point in the first Cross Country meet held in Powers. The team finished 1st in the BiCo league play and 3rd in the State Tournament. P. H. S. set 3 state records at Pendleton. Rick Taylor and Tom Rauch were named on the All-Conference Team. They were also chosen for the All-State Team. Next season we will miss the play of four fine seniors; Dale Hill, George Hayes, Ric Taylor, and Tom Rauch. We look for a good season with 6 boys coming back with 2 years of experience. The team won all their dual meets and never finished below third in any meet. Powers won the District 4B meet by rolling up 152 points, a new district record, and more than 60 points over the second place team. They finished second in the State Meet with 44 points, a new high for Powers. The State meet place was the work of two boys; Senior, Tom Rauch with 30 points and Junior, Marty Stallard with 14 points. Tom won the meets Outstanding Athlete Award for his 30 points while setting a State Record in the pole vault with a leap of 12f9 and tying the State Record in the 120HH with a fine time of 15. 0; his other points came from the 180LH in 20. 5. Marty Stallard placed third in the high jump at 5 9 ; fourth in the javelin at 171f8 and fourth in the 880 yard run with a 2:07.1 time.
