CLASS FLOWER Carnation CLASS COLORS Blue and White Not Pictured: Gary Robinson SENIOR CLASS HISTORY We entered Powers High School in the fall of 1957 with 37 members in our Freshman class. Two weeks later we were initiated by the Seniors and were the last class to have a week of initiation. We sponsored two booths at the annual school carnival. We spon- sored a class play called “Peck’s Bad Boy.” We went to the school picnic at Lake Cleawox. We started our Sophomore year with 32 merrtbers. Again we sponsored two booths in the school carnival. In December we pre- sented a class play called “The Antics of Andrew.” Due to rain we went to the school picnic held in the high school gym. In our Junior year we started with 27 members. This year we sponsored the school carnival. We had three members of our class on the Student Council. Our main event this year was the Junior Prom which was held in November with Lavender Blue as our theme. We also gave the Junior-Senior banquet honoring the Seniors in April and we decorated the gym for the Senior class graduation in May and we concluded the year by going to Lake Cleawox for the school picnic in June. We started our Senior year with 25 members and had a gradu- ating class of 23. We initiated the Freshmen one day during the third week of school. We have five members on the Student Council. We sponsored two booths at the school carnival. One of the athletes in our class was chosen to play in the East-West Shrine game and another was chosen on the All-State basketball team. We sponsored the Senior Ball in April with the theme “Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White.” The class rode on the mail boats to Agness on their skip day in May. Baccalaureate was held on May 21. Our graduation on May 26 in the high school gym finished our high school career. TREASURER Jerry Adamson Dennis Getchell Rosetta Grigsby Nancy Grove Cheryl Hall Pat Hughes Louis Lambert. The duty of the Student Council is to provide a means of government and man- agement of all extra curricular activities; provide unity of Students and Faculty; to help develop school spirit and the practice of good citizenship in the school; to promote equality and justice to all students; and to carry on a satisfactory means of relations with other schools and pupil organizations. During the school year of 1960-61 the Student Council has faced each problem with an open mind and tried to make things run as smoothly as possible. The elected officers of the Student Council hoped to have bettered the school and themselves by their visit to the 1960 Fall Student Council Conference. In the years to come we hope we can look back with pride at the Student Body government of 1960-61. The Powers High School Chapter of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools is in a state of re-organization. It was granted its charter in October of 1956. It began to work and perform some activities but in 1958 it became dormant and inactive. This school year we are trying to revive it and make it an active, leading group in our school. We have elected officers and made many needed amendments to the constitution. New members have been installed and we are in the planning stage of social activities, and the purchasing of National Honor Society Emblems. The National Honor Society of Secondary School Principals is an organization which tries to promote leadership and scholarship through individual clubs, set up in all of the secondary and junior schools of the United States. Its members have to meet particular grade, leader- ship, and character standards to be eligible and must uphold them. Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors are the only students eligible. The inexperienced Cruisers, though valiantly trying, couldn’t seem to get a head of steam as they dropped opening game 13-6. The next two games, the Cruisers rolled up easy victories as they stomped the Oak- land Oaks 21-7 and the North Bend J.V.’s 47-13. Gold Beach, for the first time since the Cruisers have played them, were the tougher, as they drowned the Cruisers for the first time, 26-12, at Gold Beach. For the first Bico “B” league game of the season for the Cruisers, they rolled to an impressive victory over the Elkton Elks at Elkton, 38-0. Traveling to Canyonville for the second league game of the season, the Cruisers downed the Tigers 35-12, to tie with Yoncalla for the first place in the Bico league. For the first home game of the season, the Taft Tigers, in non-league action downed the Cruisers 30-13. The Cruisers won the right to represent the Bico league in the State Quarter finals, by downing the Yoncalla Eagles, for the District Champion, at Powers, 34-20. Harrisburg traveled to Powers for the State “B” Quarter-finals, where they won the right to play Siletz in the Semi-finals, as they downed the Cruisers, 19-0, the first time in the '60-’61 season that the Cruisers were held scoreless. BASKETBALL HIGHLIGHTS .The Powers Cruisers have again completed a Successful season of basketball. Looking back, we can feel somewhat satisfied with the results. We didn’t win as many games this year as some of the teams have in the past, but we did win the league title again this year (the second title in the second year of competing in the Bico league), we also won the right to represent the district, as we were also district champions, at the State “B” Basketball Tournament held in Bend. We started the season with 3 transfers and 2 jayvees on the first “five”. Coach Bushnell said he was figuring on losing all the games in December, but he was pleasantly surprised when his boys proved him wrong and lost only two games, one to Mapleton by 2 points and one to Myrtle Point by 3 points, both being ‘A-2’ schools. During League play, Camas Valley, with one of their best teams ever, rose up to smother the Cruisers 66-44, but this was to be their undoing as the Cruisers retaliated during their next meeting by downing them 54-35, and then to prove that this was no accident thoroughly drubbed them again in the District tournament by the score of 59-32. Elkton took the measure of the Cruisers once during the regular season, but the Cruisers beat them twice to hold the edge on them. The Myrtle Point Bobcats beat the Powers “5” twice during the season. In these fast moving games, they won by three points each game. At the State Tournament, the Orange and Black roared into the semi-finals by drubbing the Prospect Cougars 62-47, but that was to be the end of the Cruisers as they were beaten in their next two games by lone and Portland Christian, both very good teams and both better on that particular night. We still feel however, that the season was successful. Each member on the team has learned something in the way of sportsmanship, self sacrifice, team-work, self discipline, and getting along with others. They will be better citizens because of their participation in high school athletics.
