Managers Football Highlights I have been asked by the annual staff to highlite our past football season, and give in a few words of our successes. Successes? ? ? I think not. I would like to dedicate these next few words to all those people responsible for our past football season and especially to our graduating seniors. Success? Yes, we had that. Intangible qualities that can not be judged by percentages or dollar cost per participant. To have been able to play all twenty-three boys remaining at season’s end is success- ful, because a football field provides more than just a place to discuss character education theory, it furnishes a laboratory for actual practice. We develop character much more surely by living it out than we do by hearing about what should or should not be done. It is one matter to decide upon a correct response to a tense situation when merely looking on, and an entirely different proposition to decide and act correctly when in the midst of a heated contest. This splendid educational laboratory demands actual response to a tense situation just as much as life in general does. The whole setup provides real rewards and punishments which will serve to encourage sportsmanship, co-operation, sociability, self- control, leadership, and those other qualities of character and citizenship which we stress. Oh yes! We won seven games and lost two. We lost to Yoncalla, the eventful state champion, 13 to 7 in the last three minutes of the game. Success? Yes! This was the best effort by the Cruisers since 1955, when they also finished in second place. Only once have the Cruisers finished higher, that was in 1944 when they came home with 1st place. For a season record the team had 25 wins and 3 losses. The first loss of the season was to Gold Beach 54-52 on a disputed “after the buzzer” basket. The second loss occurred when the Yoncalla Eagles won a double overtime decision 57-55. The third loss was the final game of the State Tournament. Gold Beach and Yoncalla felt the powers of the Powers Team in two other games when they were beaten by about 15 points both times. Four bright and shiny trophies were added to the trophy case this year. In December the team won the Siuslaw Christmas Tourney which was participated in by Mapleton, Florence, Gold Beach and Powers. Next in line was the BiCo League trophy in which Powers made its debut this year, finishing with a 9-1 record. The regular season over, the Cruisers annexed the district title and trophy with three consecutive wins over Ophir, Elkton, and Yoncalla, in a district tournament at Oakland. The 4th trophy won by the hustling Cruisers was 2nd place in the State Tourna- ment, held at Baker this year. The team’s scoring average for the season was 56.6 points per game and the opponents were held to 38.6. The Cruisers shot a sparkling .410 team average from the field and .611 from the foul line. This season has been an outstanding one, not only in the won-loss column, but also in satisfaction from a coach’s viewpoint. Training rules were followed precisely. And above all, more than half the members of the team were honor students. The Cruisers have every right to be proud of their record. It was accomplished with a “first five” who averaged slightly under 5’9“. This is exceptional considering the fact that basketball is almost relegated to the ranks of the big men in the past few years. A “well done” to you Cruisers, especially those seniors who can look back in the years to come and proudly say, “I was on that team of 1959-60.” BASKETBALL SUMMARY December 2 Powers 26 Yoncalla 24 11 Powers 43 Bandon 30 12 Powers 37 Coos Bay 36 18 Powers 47 Myrtle Point 31 19 Powers 47 Coos Bay 41 22 Powers 43 Bandon 33 28 Powers 46 Mapleton 29 29 Powers 48 Gold Beach 37 January 9 Powers 52 Gold Beach 54 15 Powers 72 Days Creek 38 16 Powers 51 Gold Beach 35 19 Powers 67 Camas Valley 45 22 Powers 49 Elkton 38 23 Powers 71 Pacific 42 29 Powers 61 Yoncalla 44 30 Powers 68 Canyonville 37 February 5 Powers 71 Days Creek 27 6 Powers 66 Pacific 48 9 Powers 63 Camas Valley 47 12 Powers 63 Elkton 36 14 Powers 64 Canyonville 23 16 Powers ‘ 47 Myrtle Point 42 19 Powers 55 Yoncalla 57 26 Powers 81 Ophir 27 27 Powers 36 Elkton 26 March 4 Powers ' 45 Yoncalla 32 STATE TOURNEY Powers 60 Pilot Rock 45 Powers 62 Santiam 39 Powers 54 Malin 63 INTER-COLLEGIATE PRESS Publishers — Manufacturers Yearbooks — Yearbook Covers Diplomas — Graduation Announcements Foctory — Home Office Kansas City, Mo.
