Two weeks later we were initiated by the Seniors. We sponsored two booths in the annual School Carnival held in October. We started our Sophmore Year with eighteen class members. Again we sponsored two booths in the school carnival. We began our Junior Year with fourteen class members. We had two members of our class on the student council. The main hi-light of this year was the Junior Prom which we sponsored in November with Stormy Weather as our theme song. Other important events of our Junior Year included our sponsoring the School Carnival in October, and preparing the Junior-Senior Banquet in April. We decorated the gym for the Senior Class graduation ceremonies in May, and we concluded the y ar by going to Lakeside for our class picnic. Our Senior Year was very busy. We started with thirteen members, and added another member during the second semester, to round out our graduating total of fourteen graduates. We initiated the freshmen the third week of September. We had five class members on the student council. We sponsored two booths in the School Carnival. One of the athletes in our class made State B-First String Tackle for the Shriners Annual East-West Football classic. The Juniors honored us with the traditional Junior-Senior Ban- quet on the evening of April 13th, preceeding the Senior Ball which we spon- sored the same night with Red Sails in the Sunset as our theme song. In May we sponsored the May Queen Dance. Baccalaureate Services were held the night of May 20th. The long awaited Commencement night has now arrived. As we lo k back upon our four years in Powers High School, we realize that we have seen many significant occurences. Among the most important of these was the completion of the new Powers High School. As the first Senior Class to graduate from this new building, we wish to express our gratitude to the residents of Po'. ers for thMr suooort and efforts which made possible this wonderful project. We wish to make it clear to everyone that we are oroud of Powers and take oride in being the first to graduate from its new high schohl. Playing the Lowell Red Devils, we built Up a 22-0 lead before turning the game over to the freshmen, who seeing action for the first time, allowed the Red Devils only one touch- down. Although this is not altogether one-sided, one should consider the fact that the Cruisers had three touchdowns called back. On September 21, the Cruisers journeyed to Brookings to initiate the Bruins grid squad. Here under the adverse conditions of a turfless field, blazing sun, two star regulars out due to sickness, and questionable officiating, the Cruisers were defeated by a score of 7-8. On Saturday, October 6, Powers entertained the Marshfield Wildcats, a team made up of reserves of the perennially strong Marshfield Pirates. The Cruisers led at the half, but Marshfield's depth was too much and we were overpowered 32-13. Next we traveled to Gold Beach where, expecting an easy victory, we were stunned by a 7-7 deadlock. Through an O.S.A.A. ruling the Cruisers were compelled to replay the Panthers. This time Powers was playing at its full potential, we were leading 47-0 when the game was turned over to the reserves who did very well considering their limited experience, holding Gold Beach to only one TD. Next, came the North Bend JayVees. Playing on a miserably muddy turf, the Cruisers managed to win the tussle by a score of 19-6 with most of the Powers scoring done in the last part of the game. The following weekend we journeyed to Bandbn, this time to take on an exper- ienced Tiger Squad. After a scoreless first half, the Cruisers bounced back to win 12-0. Our last game was for the District IpB championship. We traveled to Yoncalla for this game. Although we tied the Eagles 13-13 we lost the right to go to the quarterfinals by mere yardage. Although the loss, via graduation is rather heavy the prospects for next year are bright, with 9 regulars or semi-regulars returning, and some spirited underclassmen coming up. Senior quarterback, Dick McMahon was elected honorary captain for the year by his teammates. Big Dan Peterson, devasting veteran Cruiser tackle was chosen to play in the Shriner's Hospital East-West All-Star game to be held at Pendleton in August. The team, under the direction of Coach Bob Bushnell, won all of their league games and had a season mark of 17 wins and 6 losses. Early in the season the ball club won the Waldport Invitational Tour- nament. The Cruisers captured the Coos-Curry B League crown, but were finally defeated by Elkton in the district playoff.. All of the home games were played in the new Powers High G ymnasium . Three Seniors, Dick McMahon, Robert Hawk Frye, and Leon Kuhre played their last season of basketball for Powers High. Almost all of Powers height an d rebounding power will return next year including three regulars and two semi-regulars, for what should promise to be a very successful season. The jay-vees, under the guidance of Coach Bud Michaels, had a very successful season, and showed much promise of providing valuable material for next years ball club.
