HPS'-195 DEDICATIDN We, the Cruiser staff of 1956, dedicate our efforts this year to the new high school, still under construction. May this new building engender in the students of Powers High School a greater pride in school, community, and personal life than ever before. And may the new school serve as long and well as has the old. fm f W q,,1w1'..'!.NQ '?f: m E ' L' 'im R V ,GEL A 1 , H Haw.. gf WH ,, 'Sf Nu H J l'i-93' y H 1 ' Y w w Ny., A ,NmA,K..,x H M ,fx Hip,w,,mww v11w ww' lx, An' 'H vim , u??TQfzl,1 'w ' Wifi.. ,M...H.. I can see Dona Anderson, first of all. The ball tells me that she is a school- teacher, and that she is teaching the Family Relations course in Seattle, Wash- inton. I see Betty Denniston. The crystal ball tells me that she is a journalist on the Los Angeles Daily Times. She is married and has four children. Next, I can see Sylvia Fry. She is a surgery nurse in Fairbanks, Alaska. She is married to a famous doctor. I can see Bill Goodman.. He is a deep-sea diver and is, at present, salvaging the Queen Mary, which mysteriously sank the year before. Leonard Grove appears next in my crystal ball as a wealthy cattle ranch owner in Wyoming. He is married and has six children. The crystal ball clouds for a minute, then Chuck Hackett appears dressed as a hermit. After fifteen years as a hermit he has decided to come back to civilization. He has been holed up in the Rocky Mountains. Nancy Hall appears next, and the mystic powers tell me that she is a successful chiropractor, is married, and has seven boys. Jack Thorp comes into view as the Mayor of Portland. He has held the same office for fourteen years. Then I can see Bill Walker. He has earned his third million and is well on the way to his fourth. He owns two oil wells: one in Texas, and one in Powers. I see Wallace Wooden in my crystal ball as a well-known chemist. He has won the Nobel Prize for contributing the most to science. My crystal ball couds over, but the mystic powers keep reminding me that we shall meet again. SENIIIB CLASS IIISTIIRY In September, 1952, we entered Powers High School with 25 members. We were initiated the 2nd week of school by the Seniors. We went to Battle Rock for our end-of-school picnic. In our Sophomore year we went to Lakeside for our picnic. In our Junior year we sponsored the all-school carnival in October. We had two members of our class as student body officers. In November, we sponsored a western dance for our Junior Prom. We sponsored the Junior-Senior Banquet in April which preceded the Senior Ball. We decorated the gym for graduation. We went to Rogue River on our picnic. In our Senior year we were very busy. We initiated the Freshmen the 3rd week of school. Four of our members were officers in the student body. We spon- sored the Senior Ball with In a Little Spanish Town as our theme. We attended the Junior-Senior Banquet which preceded the Senior Ball. We ended the year with 10 members. Now we have reached the final steps of our goal., The Baccalaureate Services were held May 13. And now the long-awaited Commencement Night is here. May we always remember Powers High School in the future. And now we all say, Goodbye. I 19 5 5 FOOTBALL SEASON Under the guidance of Coaches Bud Michaels and Frank Doyel, Powers played their first game of the 1955 season with the Lowell Red Devils of Lane county at Lowell. The deciding factor of the game was that this was Lowell's 3rd game and Powers' first of the seasong therefore Lowell had more experience and went on to clinch the win over Powers 13-7. Things being equal in experience, the Cruisers would have given the Red Devils a much better game. The following week the Cruisers traveled to Glendale. Here the Cruisers were held without a touchdown, the only time this happened in their two years of football. The Cruisers picked up a fumble in the opening minutes of the game, they drove about 40 yards down the field to Glendale's 20, only to have a pass intercepted for Glendale's first touchdown. The Cruisers had the ball within the two yard line three times during the game but just couldn't push over for a touchdown. In the third quarter Leon Kuhre, first string tackle got a cracked collar-bone and was out for the remainder of the season. As for their third game, the Cruisers faired no better than in their first two games, losing to Siletz 13 to 7. Powers played a very good game but just wasn't strong enough for the Siletz Warriors. The next game the Cruisers were to play was a league game with the yearling Gold Beach Panthers. The outcome of this game gave Powers its first win of the season with a decisive score of 38 to 6. The Cruisers were on their way to finding themselves. The following week Powers met the Oakland Oaks at Powers for the District champion- ship and got revenge for a defeat in 1954 by trouncing the Oaks 41-0, to win the district championship. In this game they made the only touchback ever scored for or against them. This win put the Cruisers into the quarterfinals of the state tournament. The Cruisers finished out the regular season by beating the Northbend J. V. 's 25-12. On the first play Powers made a touchdown only to have it called back, due to a penalty. But this didn't break the moral of the Cruisers, as they easily scored again before giving up possession of the ball. The Cruisers had control throughout the game. Again the Cruisers showed power of a well balanced team, The loss to Monroe gave the Cruisers a 3 win-4 loss record for the season. Even though this is no record to brag about, neither the coaches nor the team are ashamed of this record. This was Coach Bud Michael's first year as head coach. He moved up from assistant coach of last year replacing Steve Beck, who moved to Monroe. No member of the team had more than one year of experience. In looking back over the season, we feel that the Cruisers had a good season. Captains for the season were Wallace Wooden and Leonard Grove. 1. . ,rw . This was a league game. Also it was probably the easiest game of the season, being won by the biggest margin of the season, 35 points and the most points of any game, 83. Powers 83 - Port O1-ford 47. For the week following the game with Port Orford, Powers had received an invitation to the invitational tournament held each year at Ashland. This year, due to an OSAA ruling, the tourney was cancelled. As the season was already underway, it was difficult to schedule any games to fill the schedule, but Coach Bushnell succeeded in getting two games with Reedsport's J. V. team rather than have the team idle for two weeks. These games were played on Friday, December 2, and Tuesday, Decem- ber 13, Powers winning 68-59 and 61-50. On Tuesday, December 20, Powers went to Coos Bay and played Marshfield Jayvees, winning easily, 50-31. Next the Cruisers met and easily defeated two A-2 schools, slapping down Myrtle Point 36-56, on December 23 and then subduing the Siuslaw Vikings 43-52, on January 3. A game which had been scheduled with Crescent City, California, was cancelled due to the weather- and road conditions making it impossible for Crescent City to make the trip to Oregon. Also a league game to be played with Ophir on January 6 was postponed because of the stormy weather and washouts in the roads. After the Ophir game was postponed, then rescheduled, the Cruisers Went through the 14 remaining scheduled games with little or no difficulty. In the first night of the Sub-district tourney, held at Gold Beach, Powers met the Port Orford Pirates. This game was close from start to finish, and the victor wasn't decided until the closing minutes of the game. Powers won this game, 74 to 65. ws? 1 1 1. iii The second and final night of this tourney, Powers played Langlois. This game was completely different from the game the preceding night. In the opening minutes, Powers broke the game wide open. Holding Langlois almost scoreless in the first quarter, Powers gained a twenty point margin. From this lead Powers coasted on to win the game 67 to 46 and the right to represent Coos and Curry counties in the Dis- trict 4B tournament. The basketball season ended in sadness for the Cruisers, on March 3, at Co- quille, when the Cruisers met Elkton for the District Basketball Championship and were beaten by the Elks 47 to 57. Elkton led at the end of the first quarter, 4-10. The Cruisers overtook the Elks and led at half time by five points, but were unable to hold this lead. The score was tied up 37-37 when the third quarter came to a close. Early in the fourth quarter Elkton gained a lead of about seven points which the Cruisers were unable to overtake. With about four minutes remaining, the Powers team went into a man-to-man defense, but even this wouldn't stop the Elks who extended their lead to the biggest in the game and won 47 to 57. Preceding this defeat, the Cruisers, under the coaching of Bob Bushnell had a very good season with 20 straight victories to go the complete season without defeat. Two of these victories were in the Coos-Curry Subdistrict 4B Tournament, thus Powers finished the season with a 20 won-l lost record, scoring 1320 points to their opponent's 904 points. We won 11 out of 13 games. We took lst place in the Coos County conference, but were nosed out in the county tournament by two points. After the tournament an all star game was held at the Armory in Coos Bay. - The all stars from Powers were Pat McMahon and James Adamek. Honorable mentions were Jim Boutin, Darrel Frye, and Larry Schneider. The South B beat the North B , 39-1, and the North A was beaten by the South A , 26-22. The B team consisted mostly of 7th graders who will make up most of next year's team. They won about 5071 of all their games. The Sth graders played several pee-wee games which were played primarily for experience. Y E L L L E A D E R S FIRST ROW, Left to Right: L. Grandrnontagne, B. Frye. SECOND ROW: F. Harrelson, R.
