BASKET BALL SEASON 1953-19514 The Powers High Cruisers had a very successful season, this year, under the coaching of Steve Beck. Their final average was much better than last year's. We had some very close games and some that weren't so close. All In all, we won 2I4 games and iost I4. When the season ended, we had the state third niece trophy In our possess- ion and a very good chance for the first place next year. This is a oulck glance at some of our tournament games: Sub-district tournament at Bandon. February 25-26-27 The first same we olayed was the 26th against Lsnglols. This game didn't offer too much in the way of competition. Langlois was ahead 6-1 for a few minutes but the Cruisers soon wslked away from then. Final score 614-35 The second night found Powers facing Gold Beach. They each had a win and a loss from each other in pre-tournament games. Gold Beach led almost all the way up until the 3rd quarter, when it became anybody's ball same. Powers got ahead at the last of the 3rd Quarter 26-27. It was after this that they acomplished the impossible. They held the ball in a 6 minute stall. The final score was 30-28. We were awarded a small trophy and given the right to play Elkton for the district championship. District I4.-B play-off at Coauille. March 5 The Elkton-Powers play-off was not what some fans anticipated the game to be. The Cruisers were playing wonderful ball. The Elks were ahead at the h8lf but Powers went on during the f.orth quarter to win 14.2-14.9. We were awarded a trophy at the end of the game and Elkton recieved the game ball. This win entitled us to attend the state tournament. State B Tournament at Willamette University in Salem. March 11-12-13 The first afternoon of play found us facing Knapoa, a very strong and equally tall team. This game proved to be probably the most exciting game of the tourny. Powers led all the way up until the last quarter when Knapoa came surging up on us. When the final buzzer rang the score was tied: I4.2-I4.2. No need to say we went into an overtime. The crowd was frantic, first a basket for Powers, then one for Knappa. It just happened we got the last basket. The final score was 14-7-149. The second evening found us facing another very strong team, Harrisburg. At the end of the first quarter the score was tied 13 up. At the half the Eagles were ahead 27-25. At the third auarter the Cruisers creeoed ahead 3U-33. In the final Quarter everything happened. The score was tied and Harrisburg recieved two gifters to make the score I4O-I42. The Crusers lost the ball in the last few seconds snd were unable to recover it. This is a perfect example of a heartbreaker. Final score: I4O-I42 The final evening of play found us playing Elgin for third place. Elgin led the first two Quarters by a very few points. We went ahead in the third by a score of 3$-3k- In the forth quarter the Cruisers made 7 points while Elgin scored only I4. Final score: I43-38. After the Ione-Hsrrisburg game which Harrisburg won, the tronhys were awarded and the all-state team announced. Bob Walker accented our trophy for us and was also named an all state member. We wish to congradulete Mr. Beck and his very fine ball team.
