Janet Dobson, the daring mountain climber has climbed Mt. Everest, Janet’s long absence has proved to be spent in the building of her dream house which she built on the very top of the mountain. The great baseball slugger, Myrtle Magill, has recently signed up with the Boston Red Sox. She is the only woman player and has earned the title of best slugger of ’73. The most famous trapeze artist in history, Janette Shawver has finally won the center ring. Janette says she is very pleased and will be with the Clyde Beaty Circus soon. Willene Grove is a famous model in Hollywood. Willene has worked hard and now has money to burn. She owns abig mansion and estate in the heart of Powers. Lois Warrick has inherited a big ranch in Texas. Being a lover of child- ren, she thought a big family would go well with a big ranch. She now has 13 children, which includes a set of triplets and three sets of twins. The greatest five-star General ever to be, Ken Wooden has ended the Korean War and is now forcing all other communist countries to sign last- ing peace treaties. Joe Boutin has taken to the field of science and is known as “The Brain.” He is trying to beat Einstein and is also engaged in making a rocket ship to reach Mars. And so ends the story of the Seniors of ’53, but their fame will never end. Powers----55-----Glendale--------- Yoncalla Yoncalla 1952-53 Basketball Season The Cruisers opened the season this year under the leadership of a new Coach, Hank Talus. Two of the team’s veteran players, Duane Brady and Warren Vernon were gone this year, which handicapped the team considerably. The newcomers to the Cruisers, however, have the potentiality for becoming more skilled players which only training and experience can develop. This was proven by their improvement in playing the games toward the end of the season when six out of the last eight games were won. The record of the pre-conference games was 12 wins and 8 losses. The first conference game was played on the home floor with the Bandon Tigers and resulted in a 52 to 43 Powers victory. Because of consolidation with Coos Bay, Coos River is no longer in the Coos County B League. This leaves Powers and Bandon as the only two contestants for the Coos County Championship. A return game at Bandon was played on the following night, resulting in a 60 to 54 victory for Bandon. The split victory necessitated a play off game between the two teams. This was held at Coquille on February 27. The game began with Bandon doing most of the scoring and jumping to a 7 to 1 lead after 3 minutes gone. At the end of the first quarter the score was 15 to 9. Powers gained two points in the second quarter, cutting the lead to four points and a half time score of 25 to 21 . The third quarter saw Powers scoring 10 points against Bandon’s 9, making the lead 34 to 31 . In the last quarter, the Cruisers came forth with their traditional “last quarter drive” which resulted in their scoring 18 points to Bandon’s 6. The final score of 49 to 40 gave Powers the Coos County Championship for the 6th consecutive year and the right to enter the District 4 B tournament at Yoncalla to compete for the opportunity to play in the state B Tournament at Willamette University. Powers was chosen to face the Douglas County Number one team, the Drain Warriors. The Cruisers had previously lost to them by a close margin in non-con- ference games. At the end of the first half the score read Drain 29 to Powers 19. In a third quarter effort to regain their hold. Powers came within 4 points of the Drain lead, making the score 35 to 31. An over- whelming drive byDrainfound the Cruisers off-guard. They succumbed to a final Drain victory of 65 to 48. In the Brookings-Glendale game, on the same night, Glendale bowed to a powerful Brookings quintet. The consolation game played between Powers and Glendale the follow- ing night saw Powers winning 55 to 50. Drain went on to defeat the Brookings team and win the District 4 B crown which Powers had pre- viously won two years in succession. Over a four year period the home record for the Cruisers now stand at 29 wins and 3 losses. Since Bandon will become an A school next year, Powers will be the only B school in Coos County and will enter the Curry County league. Next year there should be at least eight re- turning lettermen with experience of a year or more which will pro- vide a good foundation for a strong team. Much credit should be given to those who enthusiatically supported their team through the season by their attendance at the games and by their sportsman-like participation in the cheering section.
