CLASS HISTORY LEAFING THROUGH THE FAMILY ALBUM I CAME UP- ON A PICTURE OF A SMALL GROUP OF CHILDREN. A CLOSER LOOK TOLD ME WHO THEY WERE. AS I SAT THERE LOOKING AT IT MY MEMORIES WENT BACK TO THE YEAR '39 THAT A HAPPY SMALL BUNCH OF 21 BOYS AND GIRLS JOINED TO MAKE UP THE FIRST GRADE AND LOOK FORWARD TO HAPPY SCHOOL DAYS. SOME OF THEM MOVED WHILE OTHERS CAME FROM OTHER SCHOOLS TO JOIN THE CLASS, BUT WHEN THEY LEFT THE GRADES IT STILL NUMBERED TWENTY-ONE. Nineteen were initiated as Frosh. They joined with Mrs. hammack as advisor. As Soph- omores THEY ORGANIZED WITH MISS. DEVORE. THEIR JUNIOR YEAR FOUND THEM ORGANIZED WITH Mr. KEL- SAY, WHO ALTHOUGH WAS VERY BUSY WITH THE BAS- KETBALL TEAM, FOUND TIME TO HELP THEM WITH THE Junior Prom which was decorated to the theme, Stairway to the Stars . As Seniors they organized with Mr. nickl- aus. The class enjoyed many good times in- cluding the Senior Ball, their main event, WHICH WAS DECORATED TO THE THEME, HARBOR LIGHTS ,AND THEIR SENIOR PLAY, SPRING FEVER . 'J' ieit 1950-51 BASKETBALL SEASON POWERS HIGH SCHOOL THIS YEAR POSSESSED ONE OE THE REST BASKETBALL TEAMS IN THE HISTORY OE THE SCHOOL, THIS YEAR MARKS THE 4TH APPEAR- ANCE OE THE CRUISERS AT THE STATE B TOURNAMENT --THE LAST TIME BEING IN 1944, FOR THE SUC- CESSFULNESS OE THE TEAM, MUCH CREDIT SHOULD BE GIVEN TO MERRITT KFLPAY, WHO IN THE LAST TWO YEARS HAS BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR BUILDING FOR THE CRUISERS AN IMPRESSIVE RECORD OE 35 WINS AND 11 LOSSES, OUT OE 16 HOME GAMES THERE HAS BEEN ONLY ONE LOSS WHICH WAS THE FIRST GAME OE THE 1949-50 SEASON, DURING PRE-CONFERENCE GAMES THE CRUISERS SHOWED POTENTIALITIES FOR DEVELOPING INTO STATE MATERIAL, THE CRUISERS SETTING A PRE-CONFERENCE RE- CORD OE 8 WINS AND 2 LOSSES WERE FAVORED TO BE COOS COUNTY TlTIL I STS FOR THE FOURTH CON- SECUTIVE YEAR, IN THE OPENING ROUND OE CON- FERENCE PLAY AT COOS RIVER THE CRUISERS MET STIFF RESISTANCE FROM THE SCRAPPING COOS RIVER INDIANS WHO DEFEATED THE CRUISERS BY THE SCORE OF 31 TO 28. TWO WEEKS LATER AT POWERS THE CRUISERS RE- VERSED THE SITUATION BY DEFEATING THE INDIANS 31 TO 28. FOLLOWED BY TWO EASIER VICTORIES OVER PANDON POWERS EARNED THE RIGHT TO REPRES- ENT COOS COUNTY IN THE DISTRICT 4B TOURNAMENT AT YONCALLA. THIS YEAR POWERS BROKE A TWO YEAR JINX BY WINNING THE FIRST THRILL-PACKED GAME OE THE DISTRICT 48 PLAYOFFS FROM ELKTON BY THE COUNT OE 49 TO 47, THE CONTEST BETWEEN POWERS AND OAKLAND DE- TERMINED WHICH WOULD BE ELIGIBLE FOR STATE B COMPETITION, THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME WAS IN DOUBT FROM THE OPENING TIP OFF, OAKLAND LEAD 9 TO 8 THE FIRST QUARTER AND AT THE HALE THE TEAMS WERE TIED AT 17 ALL, IT WAS THE LAST THREE MINUTES THAT LEFT THE CROWD LIMP. UP TO THIS POINT THE OAKS HAD LFAD ANYWHERE FROM ONE TO FOUR POINTS, BUT THE CRUISERS PUT ON SOME FANCY SCORING AND LURCHED INTO THE LEAD 29 TO 28 STALLING FOR THE FINAL THREE MINUTES TO WIN THE GAME, THUS EARNING THE RIGHT TO ENTER THE state B Tournament. Little powers representing a school with an ENROLLMENT OF ONLY 13 BOYS STOLE THE SHOW IN THE OPENING ROUNDS OF THE STATE B TOURNAMENT AT WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY IN SALEM BY DEFEATING HALSEY 54 TO 53. THE CRUISERS WHO PLAYED EX- CEPTIONALLY GOOD BALL AND HAD A PHENOMINAL- SHOOTING AVERAGE OF ,458 WHICH IN ITSELF EX- PLAINS THE VICTORY, IN THF SEMI-FINAL ROUNDS THE POWERS-GERVAIS GAME PLAYED BEFORE A HOWLING CROWD OF 1200 FANS WAS tied ON SEVEN DIFFERENT OCCASIONS BE- FORE thf Cruisers staged a furious fourth-heat RALLY TO OVERCOME A SEVEN POINT DEFICIT AND EKE OUT THF VICTORY OF 42 TO 40. The climax of the state B Tournament saw THE POWERS CRUISERS THE FAVORITES FACING THE Phoenix Pirates. Powers jumpeo to a 13 to 6 LEAD THE FIRST QUARTER AND KEPT THIS LEAD TO MID-WAY DURING THE SECOND QUARTER WHEN PHOENIX PUT ON A SCORING SPREE WHICH PUT THEM AHEAD AT THE HALF 21 TO 18. THE CRUISERS COULD NOT AGAIN OVERCOME THE PIRATES LEAD, BUT AS LATE AS 1:20 LEFT TO PLAY THE CRUISERS WERE STILL IN THE GAME ALTHOUGH TRAILING 48 TO 44. THE FOLLOWING QUOTATION FROM THE OREGONIAN STATIS, ALTHOUGH NO CREDIT SHOULD BE TAKEN FROM PHOE- NIX IT WAS THE LOSS OF ONE OF POWERS ALL-STATE PLAYERS ON FOULS AT THE START OF THE SECOND HALF THAT RUINED POWERS IN THE TENSE CHAMPION- SHIP STRUGGLE. PHOENIX WENT ON TO WIN 50 TO 44. THE POWERS CRUISERS PLACED TWO PLAYERS ON THE ALL-STATE FIRST TEAM WHICH WAS SELECTED BY THE COACHES, THEY WERE SOPH, JOE BOUTIN ANO JR. PUANF BRADY. ALTHOUGH THF CRUISERS WILL GREATLY MISS THE SERVICES OE THF TWO GRADUATING SEN IORS---LES- TER COLD I RON AND GEORGE SHAWVER---WHO GREATLY CONTRIBUTED TO THE SUCCESS OF OUR TEAM, OUR NEXT YEARS SQUAD WILL HAVE THE NUCLEUS OE ANOTHER CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM.
