your asthma. Gid found out that altitude also scored points, for by the end of the first period it was 15-0, favor of the Texan. The second quarter saw Miles benched on five person- als, all called by the ref. that squatted in the plastic cage above the backboard. With two ref's on the court and one above each backboard, it looked as if half the team would sit it out before the game's end. jumping in and out of Texan knees seemed to annoy the longhorns no end, to our advantage, and the half-time tally read 20 all. The third quarter saw an alarming number of rebounds fall prey to the mastodons, who seemed prone to using their torsos as a barricade. Our defensemen suddenly found themselves on the wrong side of their huge quarry who quickly plunked home their goals. Tally: 29-20, Power trailing. By this time the crowd was crying for Dixieblood while the players, well, they were just crying Vi orn out they needed a spark to ignite a winning Panther Rally before the final buzzer rang and found it in Grd Seeing his chance, he snatched the ball off the backboard dribbled and let go a two handed Hip towards the opposite end of the court It caroomed off the board, rocketed through the basket and virtually tore the net from the iron ring Distance covered by the sensational shot 61 feet 9 inches longest in the history of this mammoth New York Arena Recovering the team whipped in three fast hooks, to make the score all but even with the Texans but, Power lost 29 28 Despondent the squad retired to the showers The silence of bitter defeat settled over the locker room not even Grd and Miles the 1ncorr1g1ble humorlsts could find anything funny to say The crowd began to file out, no display of enthusiasm apparent the Texans were going wild with glee, when suddenly, from over the P A Came Attention' Attention, please' Ladies and Gentle men, may I have your attention' There has been a mistake The official scorer overlooked a foul shot taken by Nliles Garwood of Power in the second quarter The game is tie' Will the players please resume their positions on the court Bedlam breaks loose The crowd emits a roar to be heard on the outskirts of the Academy s Campus Record time for getting into uniform is clocked by Nlr Byrnes as the Panthers make ready to return to battle The Lone Star State Hen stand pop eyed across the court Still in uniform, they rush to protest, but to no avail, and the game is resumed Eight points later the team that at first looked as if it couldnt keep away from the basket if Xrmageddon was in sight Up in the official s booth in big black letters the score read 37 29, in favor of well guess who Everyone Just went wild They did war dances on the seats, threw hats into the air, and men who didnt know each other from -Xdam were shaking hands like long lost February 18 1952 FEATURE brothers. People rushed into the court, hoisted the team on its shoulders and marched out of the Gym, past the site of the old 'fGold-Star Ediface, demolished in the Atomic bombing of 1955, and proceeded a half mile cross- campus to the great white bandshell on Power Mall. There the crowd, which included remnants of the 40,000 Alumni of this 'fUniversity of Prep. Schools , celebrated the event with a huge Victory Bonfire. Songs were sung, speeches were made by illustrious graduates like Ageb Shawl, 188th President of the United States and James Cardinal Waslin, Archbishop of New York. The heighth of the celebration was the cermonious dunking of the victorious cagers into the waters of Law- hentee Lake, appropriately named after some venerable old swimming team moderator of a thousand years ago. To conclude the evening in grand style, the assemblage marched over to Hickory Hall fWorld famous Auditor- 1um decorated by the century s greatest Irish artist Tom cadd O Gannj which that night proved to be the scene of the most brilliant Testimonial Dinner yet seen in the In terplanetary Hytroid Vi ith such a faithful following Power is without a doubt as it was when this phrase was written a millinlum a 0, First in Youth First in Age First in the hearts of its students, forever 'x-3, 4 Q-551, 81 ' .
