In Your Opinion by MIKE MCMAHON QUESTION' Do you expect to fight in a Thzrd World War? fAsked of members of the Semor Classes J James Hayes, Semor Room 707 No It matters not how bleak the outlook things are always bet ter than they seem and we should take a brighter forecast of the present world sit uatlon if only for our own peace of mind and soul, if not for the excellent and quite true reason stated above Anyway, I believe that people are sick and tired of war Why, there have been countries fighting each other almost without letup for the past five or six hundred years How much can a people take? There are only so many to kill and thats all I d0n't think people want their homes, their famllies, everything taken away from again after just a very short period of rest between wars, and for some there has been no rest at all Yes, I think that there will be peace for some time now The World IS weary of War Gerry 0Br1an, Semor Room 607 I agree with Jim Hayes, in a way but feel that man is by nature a greedy and warlike animal, and that there will be a Third a Fourth, a Fifth, etc etc, and no letup in them until there IS no more to destroy People are, as jim says tired of war, but man in general likes to fight and there will always be a war Thomas Murray, Senzor Room 607 The War made famous by the phrase, War to end all Wars, has not yet come, though we have been waiting for it since 1917 I hope I never see it However if I do have the misfortune to be among those that have to attempt living through 1t, and if I can help try to make that vain dream of a War to end Wars a reality 1n the hope that I will be proved wrong I will do it So frankly 66 speaking, I cannot give you an answer to your querry, because, you see, I don't know. All you can do is do your best in peace to prevent war and your best in war to attain peace Then you pray that you re still ahve A rather pessimistic attitude, I know, but that s just the way I feel pessimistic, despondent Do Unto Others Do unto others as you would h they should do unto you I know of no finer, greater or more appropriate quotation for these times, or for any time an ideal that it be hooves every individaal to live every day of his life Now what are ideals? How do they benefit one? Why do ideals make life more worthwhile? Ideals are the models the patterns, the lmages by which one may live most completely Ideals, like a great strong cable, serve to bind together the finest Brother W A Hennessy MSC experiences of all mankind Ideals of courtesy kindness, friendship loyalty faith and courage, with many others unite to make life more pleasant and to help to alleviate human suffering In contrast ideals can forstall many actions and much of the discord and bitterness that endangers the very souls of men and of nations The building of ideals should be para mount ln the life of every 1nd1v1dual For like the ripples in a pool, high ideals reach out farther and farther to touch and improve many unknown lives God grant that each of us may take as his personal responsibility the attainment of high ideals for himself and for all with whom he associates What a vast increase in the sum total of human happiness it would mean if each one of us were to be always as kind as he could be. Why, earth would be almost heaven if all unkindness were eliminated from our lives The worst kinds of unhappiness, as well as the greatest amount of 1t, come from conduct to each other If our con duct therefore were under the control of kindness, it would be nearly the op pOSlte of what it is and so the state of the world would be almost reversed Kindness is infectuous One kind action leads to another Our example is fol lowed This IS the greatest work that kindness does to others that it makes them klnd themeslves Let us try to 1m1tate the goodness and charity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus In our thoughts Do we try to see the good rather than the evil in those around us, to fix our thoughts upon their good points rather than dwell upon their weaknesses and faults We ourselves have our failings as well as our good cruahties we should like others to dwell upon the latter rather than the former In our words Do we try not alone to think but also speak well of others, especially behind their backs It IS base and cowardly to say of another in his absence what we should never venture to assent before his face Be tender of the reputation of your neighbor as you would wish him to be careful of your own The best plan is to make It an invlolable rule never, if possible, to say a hard word of anyone In our aetzons Negatively and posi tively, negatively by never doing what would hurt or injure others positively by showing them all goodness and con slderatlon in our dealings with them Furthermore we must help our neighbor spiritually and temporarily we must assist the poor, the sick, the afflicted we must pray for the conversion of the sin ner and be full of tender pity for the children of the Sacred Heart in Purga tory Thus shall we 1m1tate and become dear to Him whose Heart is Full of goodness and love ' Remember the following advice I pass through the world but 0 If therefore there rs any good that I can do, any kmdness that I can show to any human bemg, let me do rt now, let me not defer or neglect rt for I shall not pass thzs way agazn Brother Wzllzam A Hennessy The Power . , ' . , ' . . . . . . . , - 7 ' 7 7 7 n 0 .
