This, you must understand, is only half the story of what our team endures. Since it is mainly concerned with the honor it can bestow on the school and thus the school body. it is only fitting that the student body take an interest in their behalf. After interviewing the sprinters. I found that their pet gripe is the lack of interest shown in them. SP0llTS Basketball s Growlng Palns by James McCajj'rex Basketball has come a long way smce the days of Dr Nalsmlth s peach basket Yet we cannot say rt has reached the end of IIS long road of development Many kmks are yet to be lroned out Basketball has reached the top of wrnter sport popular1 ty, desplte the annoymg fact that 1ts rules change radrc ally every season Apparent ly the huge crowd of avxd fans who enjoy xt, and the ten mrllxon who play lt are above such petty consxdera trons A sport of speed strength and stamlna, of CXCltlI'lg scormg and play 1t has en thralled the lmaglnatlon of all sports lovers We must not thrnk however that lt IS a slmple game It may ap pear so to the spectator, but to the sweatlng player on the floor It IS a dlfferent story He alone knows the toll lt took to perfect the passmg and floor play whxch thrxlls the gallery The SCIEDCC of wmnlng basketball IS a sub ject etched 1n hrs memory by many long hours before a clrcular hoop that often d1dn t seem Wlde enough Even w1th the grant strldes made 1n offenslve play and defens1ve zones basketball IS st1ll 1n the experlmental stages Years back they ehmmated the center Jump after each basket 1n an effort to speed up the game Th1s man euver was successful, so much so that 1t accelerated play to the extent of makmg a l1m1ted use of the center jump a necessrty The w1den1ng of the foul lane and the rntroductlon of the ten and three second rule d1d much to ellmxnate the rough edges that stlll ad hered to the game Currently the sports world has been rocked by a SCYICS of basketball scan dals that have not shown the game 1n a very favorable hght Idols have fal len all over the natlon but have no fear frrends new ones wlll ar1se to frll the vacant nxches and basketball w1ll prove that It IS made of much sterner stuff than the few weakhngs It has harbored Ixaturally these dlsasters cannot be overlooked nor w1ll they My grlpe however does not concern them, I have one and only one the over zealous use of the whlstle Th1s may seem llke a knock at the referee the one person always blamed but thls IS not the case Behlnd hlm IS the lnevrtable rule book whlch blnds h1m to IIS use To lllus trate let us take a college ballgame played last year A hlghly seeded club came to the Garden to play one of the local schools Thexr of fense centered around one particular hlgh scorer who was currently burmng up the cords Early 1n the fxrst quarter he was bagged for four personals Thereafter he was reduced to merely an lnterested but useless bystander He was well aware that one more mxscue would earn hlm a nlce cold shower He be came a statlc phenomena somethmg l1ke th epetrrfred forest Somehow , lt was later descrlbed 1n the sports col umns, he managed to escape banlsh ment fdlsquallficatlon on a fifth foulj but for all the good he was under the boards he mlght as well have been takmg that shower A llttle modera t1on 1n the use of that whlstle mlght have enabled the crowd to see what they came to see a basketball game yet the referee was only followrng the rules Obvlously the weevrl 1n thls partrcu lar boll IS the rule book, not the poor officral who must bear the abuse for 1ts shortcommgs Glven a httle en couragement he would gladly forego whrstle solos ln the mterestmg parts of games, ln fact he would gladly do so Thrs however IS rn the future, a thxng apt to come Let us hope that the future we speak of IS not far off Ile must however commend the basketball leglslators for the Cllfllllla t1on of the offenslve three mmute rule whrch bhghted hoop play during the 48 49 season Thrs part1cular rule whrch prouded one or two free throws and possesslon for a plaver fouled IH the last three mxnutes caused more 111 feellng and roughness than any de c1s1on called by any referee an where Therr prudent actron rn th1s matter shows that the sp1r1t IS w1ll mg but slow to act At the IC B Meet Po p c Lee Voulgarls and 0Connell ldle tlme before the event Powplc wl11le the manager lugs Jackets across the flats Powp c Later Dlck Nlartln IS pooped out Powprc as Gu Amex as crosses the fimsll lme 9 ' 0 0 0 0 Y . - . . , . . .
