NEWS The Boat Ride On Monday, june 2nd, Powerites clamored aboard the AMERICANA for the annual boat ride to Rye Beach. A cas- ual glance at the crowd gathered at the pler would tell you that there were not too many left at home Here and there frlends called to each other and promlses were made to meet at such and such a place at Plavland then all scurrled onto the boat to secure a good spot at the ra1l The trlp up was a delnght a joy The AMERICANA ploughed ahead amld the happv laughter of the guys and dolls from Power and St Jean Baptlste All were eagerly awaltmg the sxght of the Promlsed Land which, ln thls case f course was the one and only Plavland Soon they were rewarded and IH a mat ter of mmutes the AMFRICANIA chugged up to the dock and dlsgorged lts 1m patlent passengers Then followed a hectlc serles of rldes hotdogs and sodas sodas hotdogs, rldes and more hotdogs The Brothers were taken one by one 1nto the Dodgem where they were shown how easy It IS to steer the little cars when they are traveling sldeway Intrepxd Jumors were led away shaklng from the roarmg roller coaster freshmen from the shootmg gallery and the sen 1ors from the Penny Arcade When the whxstle sounded all the Powerltes and therr dates for the day slowly boarded the ANIBRILAN-X for the tr1p home ll hen all had been safely stowed on board the dancmg began, what lrttle energy remained was quickly exhausted on the tlghtly packed dance floor and as the shlp neared New Xork most of the students had resrgned them selves to slttmg rt out It was gettmg dark now and all had gathered at the varlous stalrways on the shlp as the blg boat docked Then lt was tlme to go and all wended thelr way slowly to the dock where they embarked for the trlp home Boy they were tlred sooo tlred The Prom The Prom held at the Hotel Plerre on the right of Hay 24th was a tremendous success The semors all decked out ln natty turedos led thexr one and onlys through the paces set by the muslc of 166 i x,l The Amerzcana was filled to overflowm by the crowd you see trudglng back after a hard day ln Playland at Rye The Powcrltes and then' dates for the day Hlled every posslhle minute of the tune allotted ln havmg a wonderful tlme It certamly was fun but oh how txred they were Joe Carroll and h1s band and topped off the evening by a meal at Zxmmerman s It started slowly two s and four s at flrst and then a steady stream that had The Ballroom looked l1ke a falryland as the llghtlllg played on the swlrlmg fig ures of the dancers as they whlrled through the snappv measures of a Lmdv or floated around the floor ln three quarter tlme The vocallzmg of Carol Page added to thls dreamy settmg and lent atmosphere to the whole affarr The dmner at Zlmmerman s of course, was the perfect close to a perfect eve nmg, and the Powerltes and thelr dates, famlshed by a strenuous evemng, were xerv appreclatlve Longratulatlons are 1n order for Bob Lueck and h1S staff for then' many labors rn behalf of the Prom They cer tamlx dld a grand job and an efficient D Kulm makes sure that corsage one as well IS just so The Power 1 Q I . FEATURE My Son Is Graduating The audrtorrum at Hunter College was trghtly packed It was hot remrndrng everyone present that rt was June and summertrme On the huge stage decor ated for the occasron sat thrs years graduatrng class resplendent rn therr black tuxedoes and black bow tres just rn front of them sat the guests of honor, talkrng quretly wartrng for the cere mon1es to begrn Besrde them on a long table were the coveted drplomas rn neat rows wartrng to be drstrrbuted Then a hush settled over the audrence as Brother Hennessey arose to begrn what was to be hrs farewell to Power Memorral Towards the back of the hall an elderly woman scanned the stage nerv ouslv obvrously searchrng for some one Then she found hrm and con tentedly sat back and smrled He was there rn the second row her son h was graduatrng He seemed nervous she thought probably anxrous to have rt all over wrth But then agarn so was she Brother Hennessey s yorce broke rn on her reverres and for a moment her at tentron turned to the words of the speech and the parents who sacrrfrced so much Sacrrfrced so much Xes rt hadnt been easv but thrs nrght re pard most of the debt to her as she how second row who was her son Xly he had chan ed She hardly seemed a e to rdentrfy hrm wrth the thrn boy had been her son four short years He was grown up now WO How well she remembered that rst that mornrn he was so anyrous to be on hrs wav Then the trouble wrth studres and Latrn and how helpless she felt as she watched hrm stru glrng wrth Caesar and later on Crcero But he suryryed them all the algebra the French the Phy srcs and so many more that had gryen hrm trouble day He had hardly krssed her Iune 11 1902 T e Powe News of the Year in Review June 1 1, 1952 Brother Hennessy addresses a graduatm class for the last trme Scene Hunter College 8 30 ,lune 6tlr Her eyes clouded for a second as she remembered that fateful day when he had come home srck She felt agarn the ,nawrng fear that had grrpped her when the doctor told her that rt was a bad case of pneumonra The long days of wartrng the long nrghts of yrgrl all these passed rn revrew as she watched the young man rn the second row who was her son She started as she realrzed that they were gryrn out the drplomas Then she heard hrs name called and clapped rt was that was receryrn, hrs drploma How strar ht he was and how nrcely he bowed She squeezed her husband s arm and he smrled and she could tell from hrs ey es that he was burstm yvrth hap prness That was good dad had cer tamly worked hard to make thrs nr ht possrble X warm ,low stole over her then and she thanked God for hrs many blessrn s and partrcularly for the youn man rn the second row who was her son Now the prrzes were bern gryen and she felt a lrttle sorry that there was no prrze for the best son tor she knew her son would haye taken the prrze yvrth no trouble at all She clapped loudlv as she recognrzed the recrprent of the Hrs torv Nledal as one of johns frrends She must remember to congratulate hrs parents A humorous thought came then the nr ht of the Prom Could she ever forget rt and how nervous he was that nrght and how mercrlessly hrs father had krdded hrm about hrs new tuxedo and the boy: contarnrng the corsage under hrs arm She had been yery thoughtful that nr ht hrs father too lt was the son had frown up Therr lrttle boy w as one foreyer he was no longer lrttle nor a boy he was a man Suddenly as rf by mar rc rt was oyer and people yyere rushrn to meet the beamrnl., raduates She took hold of her husband s arm and steered hrm to ward the spot where they had a reed to meet hrm Then he appeared hrs face yyreathed rn smrles and as he came for ward to meet them a lump rose rn her throat as the realrzatron of rt all took hold He had graduated her son had raduated the boy rn the second row who was her son had Graduated 165 l 5 l . . 5 VV 5 V V r V f . , f z -. - I I ' 1- . .
