SP0ll'l'S Q0 ff Powp c Red Dowllng roundmg third Garglulo looks respectfully at the St Ann s catcher 154 P Southern Exposure By James H. McCajrey Wetter we is, or wetter we ain't de champs dis yeer seems solely up to a southpaw limb. The particular arm in question hangs from the left side of junior jim kennedy Last year as a soph jim held the number one pltching job only to shlne at the bat and not on the hill where his glitter would have been more fully appreciated This sea son we hope however, to see good pitching performances along with a potent bat Yaturally well accept both with pleasure The coach was all wrong last vear in many minds as a seemingly undeveloped soph walked out to the mound to toss the get away game This however, was much to the contrary for Jlm was actually a veter an in his own right and had been pitch ing games since his days ln the 6th grade at Presentation Grammar School Jamaica Ed Burns picked well Applying the scales and measures to this kennedv fellow we determine a compact 5 10 frame welghlng 160 lbs jim calls Jamacia North home, but IS known to catch some extra shut eve at 603 Being a stickler for work he fre quently pitches two or three ballgames a week during the ball season The Senior Ixiwanls League had Jim s valu able service last vear but this season he is intent on taking a gamt step into the Queens Nassau Lea-'fue Through been the eminent sports personalitv Joe Austin who has been of the great est worth in gllldlng jim toward star dom in the sports domam of Nlr -Xustm has also helped Jim with his batting technioue this ln particular is easilv seen by his 473 percentage mark at the plate Although not a flower fan c1er picklng dandelions was one of jim 5 dell hts as he patrolled the picket line Xl hile not pitching jim was help ing his chuckmg buddles with flawless outfield dutv In Ixennedv s pltchlng manner, we see a compact. practical windup which shows no signs of showmanship. This is much to his personal credit. H throws up an assortment of hooks, drops and fast balls plus a few ballons which promptly get belted However his hole pitch so to speak is his fast ball Since his windup and stretch motions are natural he has contrived a good pick off move toward second catching manv a run ner unaware Jim s actual delivery is in a three fourths manner much like the ma jorltv of major league throw ers During the interview I asked him just what particular team mate was the greatest influence to him throughout the rough going overs he received in his first vear of varsitv ball He readilv admitted his catcher Dick Paton was of the most assistance help ing him over the bumps Jlm expressed regret that Paton was one of last vears raduatmg class In the past lt has been an estab llshed practice for Sluggo Garguile to tread the long path from the bull pen this vear we are hopeful that Sluggo will gain a few extra pounds from lack of exercise St -Inns and the Mount appeared to have lim s number in the past because each time he took the hill against them he soon found him self under the soothing warmth of an earlv shower On the other hand jim as he twlrled no hit ball for sw 1nn1n s Like everv other fellow Jim has a favorite major league ballclub but strange enough his top team is an out of towner namelv the Cardinals The New Xork club he roots for sorta second best are the Coogan Bluffers the Giants I suppose he s a Cardinal rooter and a Giant sv mpathizer The humor came w hen I asked which club he would rather plav with he named the Xankees It seems he thinks this wav for financial reasons Prettv good reasoning The Power l I e l f J . . , R T 7 . . . .
