SP0ll'l'S was strictly possession type ball, each team reluctant to take any unnecessary chances. St. Francis based its attack on their tall man, who spent most of the game trying to free himself from the strangling double teaming of McKiernan and Meiers. Power's strategy called for the fast break By the end of the first quarter Power led due to the brilliant play of one Bubbles WICKIBFHHH and the deadly accuracy of Braun and Nlei ers Towards the end of the second quarter however St Francis came back strong to go ahead by one at the half In the second half the J X started to click as passes from NIcK1ernan started to find open men under the boards The Terriers however could not cope with the desperation defense of the Panthers and so were outscored 7 4 in the last quarter The game ended with Power on top 38 31 It was the f1rst J V champion shlp the panthers had ever won in Z1 years of play High for Power was McK1ernan with 11 whale Braun and Myers scored 8 and 7 respectively It was a long hard pull for the little gypsies from Power but they were not to be denied Team Scores Tom Braun John Rice 3 Stuart Nlelsopp Robert NICKIGFHHH john Myers Frank Plres Al Cunningham Tom Padian Freshmen Successful If your ear was turned toward the grapevine at this time last year you heard all about the success of the Frosh Basketball squad freshman and more freshman o it went This year how ever the frosh came up w1th an equall fine record but they seem to have been lost am1dst the randeur due the parent clubs They concluded the season with a record better than that of 'N S1 L ss ho was muted to the N I T CThe word is that Brother Ixelly declined his inyita tlon Ironically enough when the weather was the coldest in January the frosh were the hottest as they ran off an 61 ht game winning streak to add to their fmal Z1 and 7 record The lea ue record showed a 10 and 4 count good for third March 26 1952 Jim Morrls starts the mlle relay in the Natlonals at the Garden l Freshman Basketball Record 1951 52 SEASON 21 Won 7 Lost Power Opponent Rice O L G C St Augustine St Anns Hayes St Thomas St Helena Fordham La Salle All Hallows Xavier St Bernard Rice Fordham St -'tugustme Nlount St Thomas Loughhn La Salle Regis Regis Xayler Nfount St Bernard Nlanhattan Fordham O L G C Coach Brother Ixelly place Indzwdual sconng honors went to D Bohon wzth 269 pomls followed by Dujy 229 Hughes 210 Ahearn 128 O Brzen 114 Boylan 105 and A orlon 90 This Norton fellow along w1th R Pryor were mainstays dur1ng the season s home stretch Throughout the arduous cam paign Coach Kelly s pet peeve was the lack of a good outside set shot The op posing defense was in the practlce of sinking on the bucket men which often rendered them useless Last year the freshman compiled a 21 and 7 record this year as representatives of the IX they reached the top slot Track Cocklly showing their spiked soles to the opposition the Power trackmen yaulted to a surprise fourth place posi tion in the Junior Nlrdget sectlon of the Catholic Championships at Nladlson Square Garden on Saturday Nlarch 1 In this d1y1s1on they beat out Cardinal Hayes and the highly touted Bishop Lou hlm team who concentrated on the Senior dmsion The Purple XX ave show ed in eyery eyent to the thunderin cheers of the hundreds of Power rooters In every semi final eyent except two Power was represented along with the pick of Catholic high school champions In the final events Power sought and H H ' ' ' I . n . .
