The Apple Butter Gang is a cultural history club which is dedicated to the study and preservation of our rich mountain heritage. Two of its primary activities include demonstrating apple cider making each October at Home Crafts Day at Mountain Empire Community College and sponsoring the Apple Butter Days Festival at the high school. This year, the proceeds form the apple cider and apple butter sales were donated to the Veterans of the Vietnam War to help bring The Moving Wall, a replica of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C., to Big Stone Gap. In addition, the Gang presented the veterans with a MIA-POW flag and three parade flag staffs in memory of Rodney H. (Dieky) Stone, an Apple Butter Gang ‘“‘dad”’ who was killed in action in Vietnam in 1971. In the spring the Gang participated in the mountain Empire Older Citizen’s walk-a-thon to raise money for emergency fuel for the elderly in our area. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is an organization available for all students at Powell Valley High School. The objective of the club is to discuss the pressures and problems that students face daily and to stress the knowing of Jesus Christ, which we feel can help the students cope with these problems. Through a Christian viewpoint, the club has several speakers to address the everyday problems we face. The high point of the year includes some well-known coach or athlete to address the community at the club’s annual rally. The foundation of our club is to know Jesus in our daily walk. Mr. David Lee, Mr. Steve Shortt, Mr. Cary Daniels, and Mrs. Ossie Pierce are the sponsors of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. With that goal in mind, a trip to Europe is organized each summer when enough students are interested in going. An International Banquet or similar activity is usually sponsored jointly by all the language clubs. Working close with the local Kiwanis Club, we are involved each year in several projects that are designed to help us serve both school and community. In the fall of the year the Kiwanis Club sponsors “Special Olympics” at Bullit Park. This activity brings joy to a number of handicapped and disabled children. Our Key Club helps set up and also conducts various activities and games. Other major projects occur at Christmas time. The first of these is helping the Salvation Army by ringing the bell for donations. The next two projects closely associate us with the Kiwanis Club. We help them with the delivering of food baskets to the needy. We also sell Christmas trees alongside Kiwanians. The age of the computer has arrived at PVHS library! This is the year of entering data, making barcodes, printing book and patron lists, and, in general, getting Winnebago CIRC CAT program ready for future use. The club has honored special days by preparing attractive bulletin boards in the main foyer and in the | library. The theme for Book Week, November 14-20, was WISH UPON A BOOK. The Library of Congress chose | 1989 to be THE YEAR OF THE YOUNG READER with the theme: GIVE US BOOKS — GIVE US WINGS. March 1989 was designated READING MONTH for Wise County Schools. SCHOOL LIBRARY | MEDIA DAY in April celebrated the theme: PARTNERSHIPS ARE POWERFUL. The football and basketball coaches have supported the “Lucky Reader” program by providing two free | tickets to each home game. Highest readers in each class and in the school were honored at Class Day activities. Second semester, we made welcome our intern librarian, Mrs. Charles (Teresa) Ward, from Clinch Valley College. All Library Club helpers were given special awards at the last meeting. It has been a busy but rewarding year. PACE members enjoyed another challenging year. They met daily after school to prepare for competitions with other schools in the county. PACE is composed of students who are interested in pursuing academic excellence and who enjoy academic competition in the fields of math, literature, science, and vocabulary. PACE members would like to thank their coaches, Miss Nancy Reece and Mrs. Debbie Artrip, for a rewarding year. Members of the Speech class have been very active this year. The class has learned the proper way to conduct interviews, to debate, to conduct group and panel discussions, and to interpret orally prose and poetry. At Christmas time, the Speech class presented a Nativity Scene to close the Chorus and Band Assembly Program. During the second semester, the class studied drama and wrote, produced, and videotaped a skit about drop outs. Students also learned about television and radio production. The year has been a rewarding and enriching one for members of the speech class. At Christmas, the SCA buys gifts for needy boys and girls. The Student Council also organizes the intramural basketball games. The SCA is re- sponsible for taking care of the school calendar. The Student Council organizes the student exchange be- tween high schools, the Club Fair, and the 8th grade orientation. The SCA serves as the mediator be- tween faculty and students. The SCA volunteers time to help give out schedules in the bookstore the week before school starts. Members of the SCA attended a leadership conference at Radford to learn more ways to work as a team. In the cold moist earth we laid her, when the forests cast the leaf, And we wept that one so lovely should have a life so brief; Yet not unmeet it was that one, like that young friend of ours, So gentle and so beautiful, should perish with the flowers. from THE DEATH OF THE FLOWERS By William Cullen Bryant with permission from Grolier Educational Corp. On August 30, 1988, sixteen-year old Rachel Marella Ward passed away. Rachel was a member of the Beta Club, the PACE team, the FBLA, the French Club, the Science Club, the FCA, and the Varsity Girls’ Basketball team. Besides being an excellent student and an active participant in school organizations, Rachel was a wonderful person. She was our friend and we miss her very much. We dedicate this page in her memory. Jack H. Gibbs 1917 — 1989 jes Mr. Gibbs in his nest. (Memories For many reasons it is difficult to say good-bye to Mr. Gibbs. What do we say about an institution? About one who has contributed so much to so many for so many years? How do we measure a lifetime of school and community involvement? Do we make a listing of organizations to which he contributed time, ideas, and ideals? Do we examine his special loves: music, eating, swimming, eating, traveling, and eating? Should we catalog his characteristics: his punctuality, his commitment to projects, his meticulous attention to detail, his love of music, his single-mindedness of his personal interest, his love affair with the telephone, his gift of flowers, and his unbending drive for perfection? He was urbane, irascible, comforting, overbearing, forgiving, and at times unforgiving. In a word, he was human. As we look back over his more than fifty years in education, we find that although he was an English major, he blended music and art into a lifetime commitment to the Arts. Even his piolég classes were artistic, and his Glee Club was music and theater. From the young violinist to the Deen of Trinity United Methodist Church Choir for more than forty years, Mr. Gibbs pushed, encouraged, shoved, nurtured, coerced, cajoled, and at times intimidated people — young and old — to perform for him where only the finest was expected and accepted. What contributions did he make at Powell Valley High School? He was the first guidance counselor in Wise County. He wrote the words to the Alma Maters for both Big Stone on High School and Powell Valley High School. He was instrumental in building the student art gallery in the halls at Powell Valley High School and actively promoted the project every year thereafter. He directed glee clubs at Big Stone Gap High School and at Powell Valley High School until 1973. He created a tradition for choral music, laying a foundation for the present and future choral programs. The very structure of the building was arranged to accommodate the fine arts program which he was instrumental in establishing. He helped to create traditions which gave the new school an individuality and a new life. We will miss him, but in a very real sense he exists in the lives of thousands of people who san for him, swam for him, WorEEd With him, learned with him, agreed with him, of differed wit him. Because of Jack Gibbs, our hearts are alive with the sound of music, and we are blessed. . . 1917-1989 ve s par ee tt = a4 ETT Re.
