Her record is a conglomeration of District and Regional Crowns culminating in a second place State team win anda first place 4:40 relay. Garnett P. Gilliam: Mr. Gilliam began coaching boys’ track in 1963. He came to PV from J.J. Kelly High School to coach off and on for twenty- four years. His coaching career included boys’ and girls’ track and football. Mr. Cecil Maddux: For over a decade Mr. Maddux has been head golf coach at Powell Valley. Degree from East Tennessee State University in 1959. Later his Master’s Degree from Union College at Barbourville, Kentucky. Took many courses through V.P.I. during his teaching career. Mr. Curry started teaching in Wise County in the fall of 1959. He was employed for % day at Appalachia and % day at Big Stone Gap High School, later Powell Valley High School. The Distributive Education program grew under his leadership and a full-time person was employed at each high school, Mr. Curry became full-time to Powell Valley. Many of Mr. Curry’s students competed and won contests on the local, state, and national level. Not only did Mr. Curry teach at the high school level, but he taught several classes for Mountain Empire Community College at night. [eye erin 7) Mr. Bernise Zander: Education — Central High School — Appalachia B.S. in Chemistry — Raleigh, North Carolina Attended Medical School in Chicago American University — Master’s work in Nuclear Physics and Chemistry Mr. Zander started working for the United States Chemical Warfare Center at Edgewood, Maryland. He stayed there less than 1 year. Mr. Zander then returned to Wise County in the fall of 1952 and Dr. J. J. Kelly asked him to fill in for a teacher on leave at Sto nega, Va. (He was hoping to make extra money in order to return to medical school.) He remained at Stonega for 3 years. Mr. Zander then went to Central High School where he remained for 3 years. Later he transferred to Bland High School. In 1963, Bland High School integrated with Powell Valley High School and Mr. Zander moved to PV. He taught Chemistry, Physics and Earth Science from 1963 to 1987. Mr. Zander was in the teaching profession for 35 years and 4 months.
