It wrote a new Constitution and had it ratified by the students, later adding an important amendment. Members participated in many activities such as class elections, computer dating match-ups, student exchanges with local schools, a teacher-student basketball game, and many dances, including a dance-a-thon and a Sadie Hawkins Dance. One of the biggest activities of the year for the SCA is Football Homecoming. Activities include building floats, setting up the parade, halftime activities, and having the Homecoming Dance. Most of the activities sponsored by the SCA this year were set up to raise money for a marble sign which will be presented to the school by the SCA and other clubs. The SCA would like to thank Mrs. Long for all her hard work this year and wish next years members much success. 45 46 imme ii ig 7S a ; 1st Row: Miss Scott, Tabatha Zacchinni, Lisa Mosier, Kim Guttery, Missy Leonard, Capi Key, Mrs. Lawson. 2nd Row: Karen Stepp, Sherry Williams, Adriene Revilla, Jamie Mullins, Dana Johnson, Melissa Wells, Diane Mullins, Nancy Hall, Amy Fields, Ada Ayers. 3rd Row: Cindy Fraley, Ruth Smith, Lisa Hughes, Mellany Collinsworth, Janice Wells, Karen Hylton, Elaine Brooks, Letitia McCoo, Martha Hood. Library Club Librarian — Miss Billie Jean Scott Library Aide — Mrs. Charlotte Lawson There were 19 regular members and 10 substitutes in the Lucky Leaf Library Club for 1984-85. The Library club continues to be one of the most active clubs in the school, serving the student body and the faculty on a daily basis. In December, the library received a certificate of commendations for leadership in Virginia reading month activities, signed by Dr. John Davis, State Superintendent of Institu- tion, Governor Charles S. Robb, and Lynda J. Robb honorary chairperson, Virginia Reading month. Other school related activities participated in included: Apple Butter Days, Mrs. Gilley’s personal art exhibit, and her art department show. All faculty meetings are held in the library as well as many departmental meetings. Miss Scott, librarian, also has had poetry published in a collection of creative writings by the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International ASPRIG OF BASIL. In April, the library celebrated the National Library Week theme, A Nation of Readers, by trying to encourage each student to check out a book during the month. The school’s theme “Read for Pizza.” In cooperation with Pizza Hut of Big Stone Gap, a Viking Bookmark was designed by the school librarian, Billie Jean Scott, with discount coupons attached. Some bookmarks were marked for dinners. At the May meeting students who had read the most books by grade level were recognized and given a free dinner at the Pizza Hut. Calvin Sturgill, 8th grade, read 104 books, the most in his grade level and also the most in the entire school. Overall, the highest readers: Monroe Houston, 54; Sandra Collins, 50. The top reader in each grade level were as follows: 9th grade — Myrtle Rogers, 10th grade — Brian Bolinsky, 11th grade — Capi Key, 12th grade — Kim Barnette. David Collins, senior, has read the most books during his five years in high school. Also the library club enjoyed an “end of the year” pizza feast. The Senior members of the Library Club would like to thank Miss Scott, librarian; and Mrs. Lawson library clerical assistant, for their love and devotion throughout the high school years. Although the club was just formed this year, Powell Valley’s Chapter of the National Beta Club has been hard at work. Besides providing the auditorium with a new flag, they have contributed to the fund for the sign being erected in front of the school. Among its other duties, the club has been placed in charge of organizing the Honor Roll each six weeks. Throughout the year as means of fund raising, the club sponsored a dance, sold valentine flowers and spirit buttons among other things. The money received went toward the school improvements and a $100.00 scholarship to be given to a graduating senior member who had con- tributed most to the club. In March of this year, six of the club’s members went to the Beta Club State Convention in Williamsburg, VA. Those members were: Todd Stone, Michelle Powers, Paige Dowdy, James Holcomb, Jackie Cole, and Tammy Cole. Next year promises to hold even more exciting activities for the PV Beta Club. 1st Row: Robert Bowen, Tanya Anderson, Karen Tiller, Pam Kindle, Donna Givens, Marjorie Clark, Kellie Brummitt, Patti Smith, Michelle Powers, Gay Donna Frazier, Paige Dowdy, Jackie Cole, Connie Swinney, Stephen Lawson, Alicia Smith. 2nd Row: Lisa Maness, Donna Trent, Jamie McDaniel, Nancy Hobbs, B.
