Besides the prom this is the biggest dance of the year. Later in the year the selling of buttons took place, and due to a mistake on the company’s part there are still buttons to be sold. So next year buy a couple and support this association to benefit the student body. The SCA showed two movies during the year, one at Halloween and one in early spring. They were well attended and enjoyed. All in all it was a pleasant year and the best of luck is wished to Beverly Robinette, president for the upcoming year. Powell Valley Band 1980-1981 1980-81 was a very active year for the band. It proved to be a very successful year. In August we began preparing for the fall marching season by attending East Tennessee State University for a week of band camp. Hours of practicing music and drills at camp, as wel! as on the band field at home, finally produc- ed a decent show for the marching season. The competi- tions we entered included the Second Annual George Wyth Marching Band Festival, in Wytheville, VA, on Sept. 20, where the band received a division II, the Sixth Annual Lonesome Pine Band Festival at J. J. Kelley H.S. in Wise, VA, on Oct. 4, where the band received a division I, and the 30th Annual South-Eastern Band Festival at ETSU, in Johnson City, Tenn., on Oct. 18, where the band received a division I. Also the band returned to the Chilhowie, VA Apple Festival on Oct. 4 where we received a division II. Our drum major, Xavier Jackson, placed consistently high at all contests. Early in the month of December we had a Christmas Concert where the band played songs of the season for the community. Also the band attended two Christmas Parades. In the spring we gave a Spring Concert and the seniors made their last appearance as band members. Also the band held its First Annual Band Awards Banquet. We wish to cordially thank Mrs. Marc Blanken, Mr. Tim Wendt, Mr. (Teddy-Bear) David Whitt, Ms. Yvonne Livesay, and our beloved band director Noel Collins. 44 4 OD tr Carol Ann Carter Angela Sykes Kellie Gembach Daphne Thomas AT ZT OOD ee —D = 0 OVD D Left to Right: Cindy Brown, Ella Whiteaker, Jami Body, Stephanie Grindstaff, (co-captain). Its membership is determined primarily by scholastic average, personal interest, teacher recommendations, regular attendance and par- ticipation in club activities, and the student’s having time available to help in the library daily. Officers for the 1980-81 school session were Leisa Slagle — president; Rocky James — vice- president; Pam Wilson — secretary-treasurer; Tonya Barnett — reporter. A special book exhibit on Appalachian culture was held in cooperation with Apple Butter Days in November. At Christmas, the club enjoyed a Christmas social in the library. Another special event was held in May when the members were awarded certificates, library keys, and book ends. Perhaps the highlight of the year was a personal thank you note addressed to the Lucky Leif Library Club from President Ronald Reagan in appreciation of the get-well card sent to him by members of the club in March after the assassination attempt. It was a busy year, a good year, a rewarding year, and a fun year to remember. Life is Queer with its twists and turns, As every one of us sometimes learns, And many a person turns about When they might have won had they stuck it out. Don’t give it up though the pace seems slow — You may succeed with another blow. Often the struggler has given up When he might have captured the victor’s cup; And he learned too late When the night came down How close he was to the Golden Crown. Success is failure turned inside out — So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit — It’s When things seem worst that you mustn’t quit.
