The theme was Color My World. The parade went off well with the Junior class winning the float contest, and the Homecom- ing Dance was also a success. During the latter part of football season the SCA members sold buttons and pendants. We also showed several short movies during activity period that were quiet popular. The SCA sponsored a Spring Dance also. Again this year, we organized the intramural basketball program and for the second year in a row the Senior class or the Class of 1978 ran away with it. The SCA ended the year by holding elections for SCA offices. Tim Kelly was elected President. Good Luck Tim. OFFICERS: Seated: Lonnie Carroll — Pres. We learned to do different types of speeches, how to do pantomimes, and how to read dramatically. This year for the Speech Club Assembly Program, we did the ‘‘Carol Burnette Show”’ with Chloe Cawood portraying Carol. Also included in the play were scenes from ‘‘As the Stomach Turns,’’ Mr. Bones and Miss Jones, Malvi- lio the Magnificent, the Fig Newtons, and Monster Mash. The club con- sisted of 54 members and the purpose is to ‘‘develop future leaders in marketing and distribution.’’ DECA is people who are starting to make other people’s lives as well as their own, a little better. Conferences, work- shops, elections, meeting people, and _ working together are just a few examples of the opportu- nity to learn in DECA. Even when DECA members are working, they are learning because they like what they are doing and they are doing what they like. We helped the Kiwanis Club with the annual delivery of the Christ- mas Baskets. We parked cars for community concerts and, in below zero weather, for the basketball games. Mr. Lester often called on us to help him in many dif- ferent ways and the Club was always willing. Our Club this year was composed of 18 active members. We had a very successful Disco Dance with Mike Beverly play- ing the music. At the district convention, Mike Mercer was elected Lt. Governor of the Kentucky- Tennessee District. We, the Key Clubbers of the 1977-78, would like to express our sincere gratitude to Coach James Bolling for his time and effort in helping our club to be one of the most active clubs at Powell Valley. The Library Club had planned to do an assembly program. We missed the scheduled event due to snow. Karen Watkins, a Senior, was recognized as being a five year member and president. She also received the Library award. All club members were given a token to show our appreciation for their help. Through tears of frustration and joy, sore feet, hours and hours of marching, music rehearsals at night, and an enormous amount of fun, love, and laughter, the band has accomplished its main goal. We began in August with band camp at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA where we practiced long hours to perfect the art of marching and playing. Our first competition was the Chilhowie Apple Festival held in Chilhowie, VA. The band and the band fronts were rated as a whole and received a superior rating. Next, we attended the Southeastern Band Festival which was held in the Mini-Dome on the campus of ETSU. The band received an excellent rating. We then entered the Gate City Band Festival and competed in the triple A class. The band received a superior rating, a second place parade, second place drum major, third place specialty corps, and third place majorettes. With a week to work on a new show, we attended the Lonesome Pine Band Festival held in Wise, VA. The band received a superior rating, first place parade, drum major first place, majorettes second place, and specialty corps second place. Last but not least, the band attended the Blue and Gold Marching Championship held in Moorehead, KY. Only 14 bands out of the whole southeastern United States were fortunate enough to attend. The competition was tough and the band received eighth place. Football and fall were pushed aside by Christmas and basketball. The band attended 3 Christ- mas parades and presented a Christmas Concert. The Pep Band played at home basketball games and pep rallies. March music, football shows, pep rallies, music, Christmas music — all necessary and vital, do not tell the whole story of the band. Concert music, concert competitions, and serious study of music techniques are really the heart of the band program. Our Spring Concert was a salute to space science-fiction. It was presented to the public on May 18. This year several band members participated in the All- County and All-Regional bands. Our successful year came to an end as we played ‘‘Pomp and Circumstance”’ and ‘‘Ceremo- nial Recessional. ’ Our five graduating Seniors gave their final performance on June 10, at the Commencement Exercises. The members of the Viking Band wish to express their sincere appreciation to Mr. Collins, Ms. Reid, and Ms. Karen Marrs for their dedication and patience with us throughout the year.
