The VALHI is totally funded by its advertisers, receiving no money from the school system. This year the editors raised over $600 and because of rising paper and publication costs were able to produce three editions of the VALHI. This year the Student Council Association of Powell Valley High School played a very important role in bringing about a better understanding between the administration, faculty and student body. The organization was actively trying all year to unite our school. Members of the S.C.A. attended workshop this past summer. The Council constructed a Homecoming Float for the Homecoming Candidates to ride in the parade, and afterwards they sponsored a dance. The theme for Homecoming was Could This Be Magic. A Christmas Party was given and everyone attended. Refreshments were served in the cafeteria. The Student Council sponsored two movies, OLIVER and 1776, which were enor¬ mous successes. A regional conference was to be held at P. V., but due to the lack of response, the organization cancelled it. The Council sold booster buttons before our basketball team went to the state tournament. This was a good fund-raiser. The S.C.A. also sponsored Bicentennial events in each assembly. Historical characters such as Nathan Hale, Abigail Adams, and Harriet Tubman were presented. The events were highlighted by vocalists, musicians, and costuming. We had a student exchange day with J. J. Kelly High School during April. We learned much about student government. Carnes Middle School seventh graders came to visit for the annual high school orientation pro¬ gram. S.C.A. officers were hosts for the occasion. Mrs. Peggy Vaughan and Mr. James Bolling have been our capable sponsors for this bicentennial year. 46 Row 1: Ricky Fannon, Rick Rollins, Carter Lane, Steve Wilson, Tim Thomas, Joey Payne, Mark Mack, Lonnie Carroll, Brad Cole, Mike Mullins, Robbie Burton, Tim Smith, Michael Robinette. The Powell Val¬ ley Key Club is one of over 3,700 Key Clubs in the United State of America, Canada, and the Bahamas. The Key Club is a service organization. This year the Key Club undertook many worthwhile projects to serve the school and the community. The members parked cars at teacher’s meetings, basketball games, and community concerts. The members delivered Christmas baskets to the needy. In Febru¬ ary, the Key Club held a Sweetheart Contest and Karen Kilgore was crowned Key Club Sweetheart at the Spring Dance. At the thirty-ninth annual Kentucky-Tennessee District Convention in Knoxville, Tennessee, the Key Club was named the best club in Division 7. The members of Key Club wish to thank Coach Bolling for sponsoring the club. 47 Row 1: Mrs. Hicks, Karen Shuler, Sally Simpson, Carolyn Bishop, Pam Cole, Paula Slagle, Jean Coleman, Nancy Metcalf, Jean Hatcher, Ella Lou Morris, Tammy Whiteaker, Tammy Pleasant, Connie Adams, Carol Dorton, Pat Cress, Darlene Ford, Katherine Donaldson, Debbie Smith, Diane Colvard, Tina Upchurch, Etta Hamilton, Martha Stidham, Tom Delp. FBLA This year the F.B.L.A. experienced one of its most successful years. Besides the regularly scheduled meet¬ ings each month, our club participated in various events. The sponsors and a few of the members went to the Regional Fall Planning Meeting held at Radford College. Our club was in charge of the group session on Activi¬ ties to Promote Business and Skills. We presented several skits demonstrating the do’s and don ' ts of business skills. In November several senior girls and the sponsors traveled to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, to act as representatives from Virginia at the Southwest Regional FBLA PBL Meeting. We stayed a weekend and met many people from the southeastern part of the U.S. The club raised money by selling items from kits, jewelry, and candy. This enabled the club to send repre¬ sentatives to various meetings. One of our goals this year was to become an honor chapter. We reached this goal because we were engaged in so many activities. The State FBLA recommended our chapter for the Gold Seal Chapter Award. At the local contests held at M.E.C.C. we had several participants to place in competition. We also had participants to enter the regionals held at Radford College. Our bulletin board won an outstanding rating at the regionals. Lynne Watkins was elected president of the newly formed Clinch Valley Region. The sponsors and representatives went to Roanoke to the State Conference. We stayed at the Hotel Roanoke, where we enjoyed business meetings, two dances, and a banquet. Excitement was added when Lynne Watkins won the Dowell J. Howard Award. We were honored for our participation in the March of Dimes Walk-A-Thon. We received a certificate and a Battered Boot Trophy, a symbol of distinction for having such a successful walk. We would like to thank our sponsors for their unlimited help given during these events and trips. FMA- The purpose of the Future Homemakers of America is to promote a growing appreciation of the joys and satis¬ factions of homemaking, to further interest in home economics, and to provide wholesome individual and group recreation. This year the FHA was very active. In the fall we hosted the biannual meeting of the Black Diamond Federa¬ tion where we presented a program and served refreshments for all participants. Before Christmas, we visited the Rest Home in Dryden, Virginia. We took gifts for the shut-ins there. Along with these projects we served a banquet for the Chamber of Commerce and gave the proceeds to the Regional Child Development Center. For our spring project, we presented a style show for our parents and the school. We modeled our clothing projects as well as other apparel. We were especially proud to have a new Home Economics cottage for our use. We moved part of our equip¬ ment into the building during the last six weeks of the year. We appreciated Mrs. Porier’s patience and understanding throughout the year. VtiJiSliy C@ub Row 1: Adri Trigiani, Julia Ball, Sara Chapman, Pam Kelly, Lisa Howard, Ann Noel, Gina! During the second semester we read our favorite fairy tales and poems. Our assem¬ bly program was the Sonny and Cher Show from Station PVHS. Most of the club activities were carried out through the separate classes. We experienced a successful year and enjoyed all that we did. Club has had a very active and successful year this year. The purpose of the club is to develop future leaders in the fields of distribution. Mr. William J. Curry, Jr. is the co-ordinator of the Powell Valley Chapter. After electing and installing the officers for the 1975-76 school year for the club, members attended the annual Fall Rally at Appalachia High School. Later in the school year, the club participated in the District Leadership Conference held at Mountain Empire Community College. Members of the club won three first places (group sales demonstration, sales demonstra¬ tion, and job interviews) and two second place winners (window display and job interviews II). The first place winners were sent to Roanoke, Virginia to participate in the State competition at the State Leadership Conference. Several members enjoyed another trip when the D.E. I class recently went on a field trip to the Fort Henry Mall in Kingsport, Tennessee. The club would like to thank everyone who helped them in the selling of mums for the homecoming football game. Roman Club membership included those students who were cur¬ rently enrolled in a Latin class and those who had previously had Latin. This year with the guidance of Mr. Clark, our teacher, we were once again able to further our knowledge of the Roman language and culture. We realized that keeping Latin alive in the curriculum of Powell Valley High School was well beyond our control. Even so, each of us realized that the Latin language and culture has made a significant contribution to our lives and culture. Open wide, Pam! Los Cow uistadoies Los Conquistadores consisted of present and past Spanish I and II students. Some of the things we attempted to accomplish were to furnish a background to help students have a better understanding of the people who live in Spanish-speaking countries, to be able to communicate in Spanish, and to provide learning experiences to enrich the classroom activities. This club also helped arouse interest in vacation and travel to Spanish-speaking countries. Members of the club created a banner with the Hi-Y symbol for the Homecoming parade. A thanksgiving historical program was performed in memory of Powell Valley. Also, for Thanksgiving and Christmas, the club decorated the cafeteria for the students. At Easter, mem¬ bers of Hi-Y prepared baskets for the orphans at the Baptist Home. Throughout the Year many members and students read the morning devotions. The Co-Ed Hi-Y Club has had a good year with more future plans. 56 Row 1: Debbie Neeley, Etta Hamilton, Pat Cress, Ricky Wiles, David Whitt, Greg Light, Sue Bolden, Ramona Ballard, Miss Scott. David Whitt had the distinction of being the only 4th year member for which he was awarded THE LIVING BIBLE. First year members were awarded library keys, second year members received book ends, and third year members received scrapbooks. During National Library Week, the Library Club toured the Lonesome Pine Regional Library. Afterwards, the members had dinner at the Wise Inn with author and head Viking Coach Burrall Paye, as guest speaker. The theme for National Library Week and for the Bicentennial was FREE PEOPLE, FREE LIBRARIES. Throughout the year, the library has tried to follow this theme through bulletin boards and other displays. We would like to express our appreciation to Miss Scott, our librarian for her help and patience. 1975-76 has been a very rewarding year. 57 Row 1: Linda Munsey, Martha Stidham, Lisa Howard, Marsha Stanley, Donna Wilson, Lisa Pleasant, Ella Lou Morris, Teri Sieman, Pam Jones, Cindy Welker, Cindy Stepp. Row 2: Sara Chapman, Kaye Coughlin, Ann Noel, Pia Trigiani, Laura Schram, Deanna Maddux, Susan Caldwell, Debbie Perry, Debbie Smith, Toni Trigiani. The Art Club consisted of all members who were taking or had taken a class of art. This enabled the club to work through the separate classes. For the first time at Powell Valley, Art II was offered to students who had previously had a year of art. We were involved in several activities this year such as community services. We made posters for the music club, entered the Keep Virginia Green poster contest, and made posters for various other clubs. We decorated bulletin boards frequently. Also, we were in charge of displays for the upstairs trophy case. As the club ' s purpose is to promote an artistic spirit and an appreciation of art, we feel we had a successful year. We worked in many mediums and on many subjects in the classes. A section of art appreciation was taught in the first year classes. Thanks go to Mrs. Jarrett for her aid and patience in developing our artistic abilities. 59 Kneeling: Barbara Stanley, Cindy Sewell, Lori Tipton, Lisa Cloud, Mary Ann Rhymer. We began with band camp at Lincoln Memorial University where we practiced long hours to perfect the art of marching and playing at the same time! We entered competition at Pine- ville, Chilhowie, and finally at the Southeastern Band Festival in Bristol. During football season we provided half¬ time shows for home games, as well as, traveling to out-of-town games. Football and fall were pushed aside by Christmas and basketball. The pep band provided music at home basketball games. Pep rallies just would not be the same without the zing added by the pep band. Like a person with a split personality, the band must be at least dual at any one time. March music, football shows, pep music, Christmas music - all necessary and vital do not tell the whole tale of the band. Concert music, concert competition, and serious study of music techniques are really the heart of the band program. The public and the student body must have both, so, concert season with its Bach and Glenn Miller and Verdi provide the soul of the year. Hours of scales and practice produce the sounds, rich and full bodied, to please the listener as well as the artist producing it. In a very real way the band provides pleasure trips for people of all ages. All of this is expensive and without the help of the Band Boosters Association the task might be impossible. The culmination of the year was the working trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, June 14-19, 1976. We performed at the Vanguard School in Lakeland, Florida, and at Disney World where we were overwhelmed by the crowds, the excitement, and the treatment. Tired, weary, and happy, we returned only to find that the summer was too brief, and too busy for us to accomplish all that we wished to do in order to be prepared for a new year filled with band camp, blisters on our feet, lost music, sticky valves in horns, and more lost music. 60 To Mr. and Mrs. Tipton and Miss Shankle we express our thanks for their patience and understanding throughout the year. CkomS The Powell Valley forty-seven voiced chorus started the year with two selections for a Fall Assembly Program. The Yuletide Season was opened with a Sunday afternoon Christmas Con¬ cert given at the Southwest Virginia Museum and continued with a night concert, assembly pro¬ gram, and special concert for the Carnes Middle School of sacred and selection numbers. Rick Jones, tenor, and Lindsey Meadows, soprano, passed auditions at Emory and Henry College to become members of the two hundred voiced All- Regional Chorus held in Pulaski, Virginia during February. The regular Spring Concert took a change as the Glee Club presented the off-Broadway musical comedy, Rock-N-Roll. The members sang, acted, and danced their way to a high success in their first attempt at musical theatre. The year ended as the Glee Club sang for the Baccalaureate Services in May.
