We knew one such individual. He was an excellent teacher, cajoling, encouraging, and lead- ing. He was a warm, gentle friend, joking, smiling, and offering a helpful hand when it was needed. He was a respected community leader, a member of several boards of directors. He was a loving husband and father, proud of his family and of his family of students. He was a practic- ing Christian, a man of his word. He was compassionate and understanding. We miss his laughter in the classroom, his prayer at faculty gatherings, and his cheerfulness in the halls and teachers’ lounges; but we will warm ourselves with pleasant memories which we will always carry in our hearts. We knew Rexall Harold Carnes. Valhi Editors Lucia Trigiani and Karen Kilgore Photographers Bill Bobich and Russell Fig The Valhi had a very successful year although the staff was inexperienced. The year began when the editors, Karen Kilgore and Pia Trigiani, attended a newspaper workshop at Radford College. We learned many things on how to make a newspaper interesting and exciting. During the summer, we sold ads to merchants of Big Stone Gap and Appalachia. Because of these sales, the Valhi Staff was a financial success. This year we published four editions twelve pages. The Valhi Staff wishes to thank Mr. throughout the 1974-75 school year. of the Valhi. The last edition was dedicated to the Seniors. This edition consisted of Clark, our sponsor, and the English Department for all the help they have given us 45 ROW 1: Pat Potter, Mr. Williams, Mrs. Vaughan, Mark Bledsoe. Every student is a member of this organi- zation and has the opportunity to elect the members of the association in the spring. The Council consists of five officers and two representatives from each class. The 1974-75 S.C.A. began meeting and organizing in the summer. The first student activity sponsored by this organization was a Sadie Hawkins” dance. Also in September several members served as guides for District O meeting held at Powell Val- ley. With the death of Mr. Carnes, the S.C.A. felt a need to memorialize this great teacher. Students contributed money which was used for two purposes: a gift of money to Mountain Empire Community College Library and a portrait of Mr. Carnes to be placed in the Powell Valley High School Library. The portrait was presented by Mrs. Carnes to the school during the Class Day exercises. In October the S.C.A. sponsored the Homecoming parade and dance. The French Club won first place for the best float with their version of the Eiffel Tower. The Homecoming theme was You are the sunshine of my life.” Toni Collier, a senior, was crowned queen by the 1973 Homecoming Queen Sharon Robertson. Late in October, the S.C.A. held a mock congressional election. In the Charles Horne and William C. Wampler race, Mr. Wampler won. The school Christmas tree, which was placed in the main hall was donated by the Dogwood Garden Club. The S.C.A. was in charge of decoration. A Christmas dance, a Holly Hop,” was also held just before Christmas vacation. We sponsored the movie, JANE EYRE, starring George C. Scott and Susannah York, was shown in the auditorium. After spring elections, installation of officers was held. Donna Elkins, president, relinquished the gavel to newly elected president Clyde Franks. The year was successful through the cooperation of faculty, administration, and Council members. We would like to express deep appreciation to their capable sponsors, Mrs. Vaughan and Mr. Williams. 46 HI-Y CLUB ROW 1: Margo Jackson, Debbie Shuler, Louise Peters, Kathy Zion, Gina Brown, Lisa Giles, Barbara Stanley. Future Business Leaders of America The Powell Valley FBLA is a club consisting of members who are engaged in taking Steno I and II, Clerk Typist I and II, Typing I, and General Business. These members are concerned with extending their knowledge and interest in the field of business. This year has been a very active one for our club. The sponsors and some of the members have attended the Spring and Fall Radford Conventions. Several of the members participated in business-related contests at Mountain Empire Community College, and then on to Radford College to compete. Our spon- sors and nine members went to Richmond for state competition in which Sharon Yost was participating. Sharon won second place in spelling which entitles her to go to Miami, Florida for national competition. Other activities included selling candles for the March of Dimes and visiting a rest home. We have had a very successful year, not only in the skill contests, but also in club activities. Special thanks go to our sponsors for the cooperation and help extended to us. 50 ROW 1: Chris Miller, Toby Wax, Lisa Showalter, Frances McKinney, Jackie Williams, Nicky Miller, Howard Wells, Arnold Lane ROW 2: Brad Cole, David Qualls, Sammy Sturgill, Mack Roller, Mike Jones, Mark Bobrosky, Richard Griffin. The sale of mums for homecoming, sponsored by the DE Club, was a great success this year as it has been in the past. The Powell Valley DECA Club was selected as the outstanding DECA Club in District V for the second straight year. This was based on the performance of the students on District level in their respective contests. The club won first place in Public Speaking I and Group Sales III; second place in Window Display, Job Interview, Public Speaking II, and Advertising, Layout, and Copyright; third place in Sales Demonstration, Decision making, and Parliamentary Procedures. Through tears of frustration and joy, sore feet, hours and hours of drilling, music rehearsals at night, and an enormous amount of fun, love, and laughter, the band has accomplished its main goal. In August, we began preparing for marching season. Our first competition show was the Mid-South Marching Band Festival in Gadsden, Alabama. The Viking Band received Good, Excellent, and Superior ratings. Next, we attended the Southeastern Band Festival in Bristol, Virginia-Tennessee where the band received First Place, our Drum Major, Mike Younce, received First Place, the majorettes received First Place, and the flag girls received First Place. After Bristol, the band returned to the South once more to attend the Tri-State Band Festival in Cleveland, Tennessee. We received Superior and Excel- lent ratings The following week-end the band performed their winning half-time show at a football game at the Emory and Henry Homecoming. After marching season was over, the Viking Band began concentrating on the Christmas parades in Appalachia and Big Stone Gap. Also, the band worked along with the Viking Chorus to present a Christmas Program for the school and the public. This year several band members participated in the All-Region Band. Also, they participated in the All-County Band. Our Spring Concert was presented to the public on May 9, 1975. We played American music from the turn of the century through the music of today. Our successful year came to an end as we played Pomp and Circumstance” and the traditional Days of Glory.” Our five graduating Seniors gave their final performance June 2 at the Commencement Exercises. The members of the Powell Valley Viking Band wish to express their thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Tipton and Miss Shankle for all their dedication and patience with us throughout the year of 1974-75. 60 Viking Band at the South-Eastern Band Festival MAJORETTES: Barbara Stanley, Lisa Cloud, Lori Tipton, Kimela Hutchinson, Mary Anne Rhymer, Cindy Sewell, Karen Kilgore.
