Dana McCoy and Teresa Kirk began early in the year to work to produce a quality paper. Sheila Zirkle and Diane Kelley along with Mrs. Lee attended the SIPA meeting in Columbia, South Carolina, in April. They learned much about reportage, layout, photography, etc. We anticipate that next year will yield the fruits of our experience this year. GCA PwMtted Good WM President Debbie Lane Vice-President Mike Flanary Secretary Duane Tate Chaplain Blaine Boatright Sponsor Mr. Gary Williams This year the SCA participated in many worthwhile projects. We planted a freedom tree in honor of the veterans, missing-in- actions, and prisoners of war. We held a mock election to see whom the student body wanted for President. The election was won overwhelmingly by Presi- dent Nixon. The SCA helped around school this year by fixing bulletin boards and cleaning trophy cases. The SCA held two dances, the Homecoming Dance and a sock hop. The Council chose the theme for the Homecoming, “Color My World.” We made a float for the Queen and her Court. During Christmas the SCA had a Christmas party for the school. Everyone went to the cafeteria to enjoy punch and cookies. We also sponsored the Intramural Basketball program. The SCA participated in several district and state meetings of our organizations. Members of our organization attended the district meeting in Clintwood and we sent three representatives to the State Convention. Debbie Lane, Diane Phillips, and Mr. Williams brought back new ideas to enrich next year ' s SCA. We wish to express our appreciation to Mr. Williams for his guidance during this year. 48 u . i ■ Ff-fi President Merita McDaries Treasurer Vickie Akens Reporter Debbie James Historian Suzanne Adams Sponsor Mrs. Pat Porier The purpose of the Future Homemakers of America is to promote a growing appreciation of the joys and satisfactions of homemaking, to further interest in home economics, and to provide wholesome individual and group recreation. Our topic of study for the year was “Decisions that count.” We had speakers who guided our thinking on decisions such as travel, ecology, and careers. To promote our department, we entered a float in the Homecoming Parade, sponsored a Christmas Crafts Open House in our department, and presented an assembly program “Customs and Costumes of Women in the Development of America.” To improve our department, we contributed our efforts to earn partial pay- ment toward new kitchen equipment and appliances, sewing machines, cur- tains, and accessories. We participated in Federation and State meetings and conferences through- out the year and received an “Outstanding Chapter Award from the Virginia Association of Future Homemakers of America. During the first meeting we elected offi- cers and made plans for the year. Later we discussed new member initiation. During other meetings we had filmstrips and talks on Roman history. Later we held our annual Latin Banquet. We sold the first year students as slaves and each had to serve his master as best he could. After a few antics, we were entertained by piano solos, songs, and dances. We wish to thank Mrs. Rose for her patience and understanding throughout the year. Pieivclt Club President Marcia Quesenberry Secretary-Treasurer Ann Midkiff Sponsor Mrs. Brenda Lee This year the French Club was the busiest ever. In our projects, we not only learned the language, but we learned about the peo- ple and customs. On the agenda this year were two main projects. The first was carolling at Christmas. We enjoyed walking in the snow, singing French carols, and returning to the church for hot chocolate and cookies. Even if the listeners could not understand the words, they still share in the joy we had in singing them. But the main event of the year was the huge French dinner. Each member was asked to bring a French dish of his own choice. Among the different delicacies were cheese souffle, onion soup, French green beans, crepe suzette, chocolate mousse, and French coffee. Mrs. Lee was the master chef and she proved herself very capable. We wish to thank her not only for her Julia Child streak but as a great teacher and friend. iflP v A f k 1 ,+ A Row 1 : Diane Kelley, Kathy Poole, Martha Horton, Pam Gilley, Terry Brown, Karen Marcum. Tipton The Viking Band was busy this year with all the usual activities, but it was a year of rebuilding, a year of hard work. For the Band, the school year always begins in mid-August to prepare for football shows and the Bristol Band Festi- val. This year was no exception. Hours of marching produced memorable shows, and the year had only begun. Basketball season ushered in the pep band season, running concurrently with concert season. It seemed that as the basketball season picked up momentum so did the demands on our time. Con- certs sprinkled the year — Christmas and Easter with the Glee Club — and Spring Concert in May. Mr. Robert Welch, Band Director at Western Carolina University, spent a weekend with us and we felt we profited by his professional guidance. Not reflected in our ranks is the building program which Mr. Tipton has accomplished. An Intermediate Band, numbering approximately sixty, spent sixth period at Powell Valley in rehearsal. We feel the future is very bright with so many young members ready to move into the marching season next year. The major project for the year was the purchase of new uniforms — $1 0.000 worth of new uniforms to be delivered in August, 1 973. We wish to thank the Band Boosters who helped tackle this almost impossible task. To Mr. David Tipton, our director, and to Mrs. Angie Tipton, his wife, who so ably trained the majorettes, we wish to express our appreciation. DIRECTOR — Mr. David Tipton. Coaches Walker and Bentley did a great job and next year some of the boys will help build up our varsity. The JV basketball team also had a good year, finishing with a 1 3-5 record, and just missed qualifying to play in the district cham- pionship game. Again Coach Bentley did a fine job as each player gave his best to help the team and also improve individually. Coach Paye is also counting on several play- ers to help the basketball team in 1 974. At pep rallies they radiated pep and spirit; at bonfires they gave wholly of their vim, vigor, and vitality; at games they were there as the team entered. The year had ended and the annual was finished. Leaving behind all the great times, the laughing faces, the good-natured hugs, and the many friends, we walked out the door. We might return for a visit, but it would never be the same. The magic would be gone. In every mind was the hope that others would love Powell Valley as much as we had and would learn about life inside its walls. We didn’t look back. So we clowned for the camera — instead of crying.
