V The Seniors of Powell Valley High School Big Stone Gap, Virginia Present The Thirteenth Edition of the VALHALLA TABLE OF CONTENTS Administration and Faculty.6 Classes.12 Organizations.48 Athletics.84 Features.104 Although our thoughts, feelings, and ideas are our own, our expressions belong to those around us. Learning to express ourselves well can be a lifelong course. We voice our expressions not only with words but also with actions. In our years here at Powell Valley High School, we have learned the value of our expressions. Miss Lora Dingus DEDICATION Occasionally a person appears on the scene and seems to be the right person, at the right place, at the right time. They fit and wear well. They stand tall among their associates and members of their profes¬ sion. Miss Lora Dingus appeared on the scene as a teacher. Although slight of stature, she stood tall in her chosen profession. She spent many years in Big Stone Gap as a teacher, and this community is better for her having passed this way. She was a master at classroom control, imparting knowledge in her quiet, unassuming manner. Her methods inspired those who taught with her and those who studied under her. There is no question concerning her interest: the student came first. Helping with classroom work, chaperoning a dance, riding a booster bus, or working on the yearbook, Miss Dingus was always there, ready to serve. To Miss Dingus, a teacher of exceptional skill and understanding, we dedicate this, the Thirteenth Edition of the VALHALLA. 3 r.Tj. ' i ALMA MATER To Vikings bold we give our lov Our dreams, our tributes true. Through life’s full course . our hearts will move To bring you honor too. So hail to thee, 0 noble school: Stand firm and strong and right; And may weaver look to thee For strength, love, and purity. Is anything ever truly new? Everything ' new” that happened to us probably happened to thousands of others, thousands of times before. We could ignore this idea and try to make it on our own, or we could listen to those more experienced and learn from their achievements and mistakes. The choice was ours. PPps. ' ■- ■ ■ . TVs- t «j ADMINISTRA TION In so many ways the quality of any school is determined by the quality of principal who is at the helm. Powell Valley High School was fortunate to have had Mr. J. P. Horton as princi¬ pal for eleven years. Under¬ standing and fair, he dealt wisely with each student’s prob¬ lems. As a positive thinker, a dedicated educator, Mr. Horton will long be remembered by fac¬ ulty, students, and patrons. Mr. J. P. Horton — Principal 6 May I have your attention, please? The student body voted in favor of this revision. Among other activities, we spon¬ sored Homecoming, dances, and a Christmas party for the entire school. Projects of the Library Club have included a skit entitled ' Sweet Seventeen” which we presented for assembly, a Homecoming banner, a Christmas party for the faculty, celebration of National Book Week with posters made by the Art Club, attractive bulletin boards, and seasonal decorations. The club visited Clinch Valley College and the Wise County Public Library and had dinner at the Inn for National Library Week. We also were hostesses for the Ervinton High School Library Club in April. We want to commend our sponsor and librarian, Miss Billie Jean Scott, who with much patience and concern has directed an efficiently organized and well-operated library. 56 ACCOMPANISTS: Mrs. Betty Cornett, Teresa Kirk. Once again the Viking Glee Club sang its way into the hearts of hundreds of students and area folks during the 1971-72 season. At Christmastime we produced our beautiful yuletide show, a musical saga characterized by candlelight, the reading of the Christmas story from the Bible by our Principal, carols old and new, and finally, Can- tique de Noel,” a brilliant production number utilizing the big Viking Band and guest soloist, Mrs. Barbara Polly. During March and April we made a total of five performances. Once again we were assisted by the Viking Band in bringing The Glory of Easter” to our audiences. Costuming for the Glee Club found the girls beautifully dressed n red maxis and white blouses, along with their traditional red-blue accent bars. The boys, slightly off-Broadway, came on in white trousers, multi-pastel shirts, and red ascots. For the big finale they donned white jackets to enhance the solemn cathedral-like setting. Perhaps the highlight of our efforts was our appearance before the Wise County Education Association’s annual Spring meeting at Kelly High School in Wise, in late April. Four hundred fifty teachers thrilled to the performance and placed a coveted accolade on the choral and instrumental students of our school. Such approval did not come easily. And it was worth working for. Special thanks go to Mrs. Betty Cornett of Appalachia who added much to the professional quality of our work, and of course to Mr. Gibbs, our director, who was with us through it all. 57 Row 1: Susan Farmer, Sharon Moore, Brenda Gamble, Jackie Woollums, Becca Wright, Ann Smith, Mary Lane, Maggie Buckles. Activities during classtime include synopses from THE TRAIL OF THE LONESOME PINE drama, impromptu speeches, court procedures, putting activity” in the lunchroom on trial, impersona¬ tions, special guest singer George Reynolds, debates, sing-alongs, story-tell¬ ing, discussions, all of which go along with ordinary classwork. During the year, the club remained quite active. The debate team partici¬ pated in the Clinch Valley Invitational Tournament, and both sides placed first in forensic competition. Part of the class went to Charlottesville to see other debate teams compete. We experimented with drama and worked on one act plays. The Club also had an assembly program in April. Having many outstanding people in the class, we chose superlatives: most talented, Robert Young; most likely to succeed, Jackie Woollums; live¬ liest, Lou Moore, most talkative, Brenda Gamble, quietest, Susan Farmer; wittiest, Becca Wright; most serious, Sharon Moore; most congenial, Mary Lane; most improved speaker, Mike Giles; Mis s Speech, Maggie Buckles; Mr. Speech, Harold Hill. Never belore has the Powell Valley Viking Band been so successful. During the 1971-72 season we have received five first places, winning every competition we entered. We started the school year with the largest band we’ve ever marched and a new additon: eight flag girls. Never having marched before, these girls really worked hard and made the band seem much bigger and more refined. After several weeks of after-school drill we participated in the Chilhowie Apple Festival. With a great number of new marchers, we were slightly wary of our chances, but we did our best and we came through with first place, our first at Chilhowie in several years. More hours of drill and several football game halftimes brought us to our most impor¬ tant competition, the Bristol Band Festival. For the second time in four years we made a clean sweep of the awards, with our band receiving a Division I rating, our Drum Major and Majorettes being awarded first place in Division D. Few bands will ever achieve this honor and we are the only band to ever do it twice. In December, we joined with the Glee Club to present the annual Christmas Program. We arranged an exchange program with Jonesville. Both schools were very pleased, and we made some new friends. We had four members to participate in All-State Band held at John S. Battle in Bristol. A very large number took part in All County Band at Powell Valley in January. In April, the band and Glee Club again combined to present the Easter Pageant, includ¬ ing the fashion models and guest soprano Barbara Polly. This program was very well received by both grade schools and Powell Valley students. We presented our Spring Concert on May 19. The next week we went back to after- school drill and Saturday, May 27, we participated in a parade competition at the Pine- ville, Kentucky, Mountain Faurel Festival. We again took the honors with first place in our division. The trip was greatly enjoyed and was the perfect ending to our perfect year. We the members of the Powell Valley Viking Band wish to thank Mr. Tipton for all his dedication and patience with us throughout the 1971-72 year. These will be missed — Sharon Moore, Eva Gover, Don Leonard, Robert Young, Kenny Anderson, Stephen Tilley, Harold Hill, Mike Giles, Karen 73 Marrs, Mary Lane, Julie Sutherland, Phillip Stevens. ;4 ASSEMBLY CALENDAR — 1971-72 August 27 Mr. Horton Cheerleaders September 3 Presentation of Viking Squad Mr. Maddux — Mr. Pruitt — Mr. Bentley September 17 Reverend H. The soothsayers” saw us as a possible contender for a high seat in the standings at the beginning of the year, but Coach Maddux said, We’ll be lucky to win five.” Although we weren’t able to live up to the expectations of the news media, we did fulfill Coach Maddux’s prophecy and still closed the season with a win¬ ning record. We can remember starting with that painful week in Au¬ gust. Much hard work was required to put a team together. The coaching staff of Cecil Maddux, flanked by his assist¬ ants, Dickie Cornett and Donald Pruitt opened to us a road of life which many of us had never traveled before and pos¬ sibly never will travel again. Although the roundballing Vikings didn’t walk away with any top honors, they didn’t give the other teams an easy time on the court. The Viking basketball team earned what they received. They worked hard at practice, developed that tough mental attitude, and always came away with that all important moral victory. Coach Paye took his pearls” all the way to the regionals only to find that the ride back home was a little longer than expected. As always we were proud of our Vikings and laughed or cried along with them. Good luck next year, Vikes! 93 Hennsey makes his 1000th point during the Coeburn game. Wise County Tournament.
