MARY ALICE GEMBACH The Student Co-operative Association is the basis of student government at Powell Valley. Every student is a member of this organization and has the opportunity to choose their Student Council in elections held each spring. The Council consists of two representatives from each class and five officers elected by the entire student body. The Student Council has sponsored several projects this year which have been aimed toward the benefit of the student body. Field Day gave the stu¬ dents an opportunity to participate in organized recreation. We sponsored several dances held after football and basketball games. Homecoming, and a money-raising drive for the Heart Fund. We sent representatives to the SCA District Conference held with Pound High School, which greatly benefitted both councils by giving each an op¬ portunity to observe the functions of another school. To Mrs. Gembach, our sponsor, to Mr. Horton, our principal, and to all other people who have given us help and co-operation, we extend our deep¬ est appreciation. We are proud of our organization and we hope that it will continue to function as a true student co-operative association. GLEE CLUB PRESENTS ‘THE SOUND OF POWELL VALLEY” Director.MR. JACK H. DAVID TIPTON Band Captain.MICHAEL SENDERS If an organization is to be successful, it must have a common goal. Its members must be united, striving to achieve excellence through this unity. The 1970-71 Powell Valley Viking Band achieved its goal this year — to be one of the finest bands in Southwest Vir¬ ginia. We achieved our goal with hours of drill, ' ' first position!”, rehearsals, horns up!”, sore feet, Mr. Tipton, when are you going to give us a break?”, tears of frustration and joy, and an unusually excessive amount of fun, laughter, and love. In August, we began our preparations for the Southwestern Band Festival in Bristol. We were pleased with our performance at the Chilhowie Apple Festival, and a week later, all our months of hard work paid off. The band received three Division I ratings: the band made a Division I, the majorettes walked away with first place in their division, and drum major, Donna Giles, received a I rating. After marching season ended with its halftime shows and competitions, the Viking Band joined with the rest of the school to prepare for the coming evaluation. We joined the Glee Club on November 11 to present a program entitled The Sounds of Powell Valley,” a kaleidoscope of the sights and sounds that are the very essence of our high school. The Holiday Season approached, and the Band and Glee Club presented the annual Christmas program. We also participated in the Christmas parade in Big Stone Gap. Seven of our members participated in the All-Region Band in Galax, Virginia, and a greater number participat ed in the All-County Band in Norton. Both of these events were very educational and benefitted our musicians greatly. The Viking Band combined with the Glee Club for the third time to present an Easter program, which was enthusiastically received by both elementary schools and the high school student body. Our Spring Concert was presented on May 15. After that successful performance, the band began practicing music for the coming year. But we also practiced Pomp and Circumstance” and the tradi¬ tional ' Days of Glory.” Our eight senior hand mem¬ bers gave their final performance at the graduation exercises on June 4. We members of the Viking Band of 1970-71 look forward to keeping our reputation as one of the finest in Southwest Virginia. Under the patient and capable coaching of Burrall Paye, the Powell Valley Vikings finished the season with a 16-7 record. This, however, does not in itself reflect the for¬ midable strength our team possessed, for five of the seven defeats were lost by a total of only nine points. Perhaps appropriately, the team reached their peak of performance in the early sta¬ ges of the Wise County Tournament. On the first night of competition, despite the Vikings’ cold night, Norton suffered a decisive loss. Tin? following night the Vikings rolled over the Wise Indians, and impatiently awaited the game with Appalachia. The Bulldogs were no match for the superb Vikings, and thus with this victory was clutched the Wise County Tournament trophy. The following week, the Vikings met Coeburn in their first game of the LPD Tournament. The Blue Knights fell hard as the Vikings dealt them a 107-67 loss and set a record for most points scored by a Powell Valley team. Next they met Appalachia, but plagued with injuries, failed to stop the Bulldogs who edged us 53-50. Several awards and honors were merited and received by individual players of the team. James Blondell was presented an award commemorating his good sportsman¬ ship in the Wise County Tournament. Bill Berta, Donald Hennsey, and Tony Squire were honored as members of the All-Wise County Team. Billy Joe and Donald gained further recognition as they were named members of the All-LPD Team. Billy also re¬ ceived honors as the Most Valuable Player of the Wise County Tournament, Player of the Year in the Lonesome Pine District, and a member of the All-Southwest Virginia Team.
