SENIORS Stone, Jones, Sturgill, Wilson. President Dewey Jones Vice-President Billy Sturgill Secretary Andrea Wilson Treasurer James Stone Sponsors Miss Faith Cox Miss Callie Darnell Miss Lora Dingus Mrs. Grace Rose On June 4, Powell Valley High School graduated 109 seniors. For these 109 seniors, the 1969-1970 school year has been a very ' successful one, holding many memories for us all. Although both our class rings and calling cards were late in arriving, we soon assumed the important role of being seniors. Our year was one of learning the meaning of co-operation and realizing responsibilities that must be faced outside the secure world of school life. As our senior year drew to a close, we had many things to recall with pride. Many distinguished themselves in various activities, both in school and community. Our class officers performed their duties well. They were: Dewey Jones, President; Billy Sturgill, Vice President; Andrea Wilson, Secretary; and James Stone, Treasurer. Several seniors showed themselves to be true Vikings in athletics. Lynn Masters and Dennis Edens received awards for their outstanding performance in football. For his ability in basketball, James Stone was chosen as a member of the All-County Basketball Team and was chosen to receive the All-District Sportsmanship Award. Three seniors, Dewey Jones, James Stone, and Toby Collins, were members of the championship Viking basketball team, who won the Wise County Tournament and the season Lonesome Pine District Championship. They won the right to represent the district in the State Regional Tournaments in Blacksburg, and became the first Viking team to do so. For their outstanding sportsmanship, Carolyn Gibson and Alan Kedzierski were chosen as Miss and Mr. P.V. Spirit. Doris Manious was selected by the football players as the 1969 Homecoming Queen. Senior band members had the privilege of attending the inauguration of Big Stone Gap ' s Linwood Holton as Governor of Virginia as the Viking Band led the Inaugural parade. Andy Allen, a Senior, has done an excellent job as drum major for the past three years. Selected as a member of the All-State Band was another senior, Marjorie Mabe. Those receiving special recognition for superior scholastic ability were Tony Porter and Michael Stallard, who were both National Merit Scholarship Finalists. Others receivng special recognition were the winners of the good citizenship awards, which went to Nancy Bellamy, from the D.A.R., and to Dennis Edens, from the V.F.W. Cathy Hood received the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow Award, Andrea Wilson and Cecelia Skeen were the senior Hi-Y members attending the Model General Assembly in Richmond. The achievements of our class included dramatic ability as well. Andrea Wilson and H. R. Giles won second place in the Clinch Valley College Invitational Forensic Tournament for their performance in dual activity of the play, The Rainmaker. Hour of Honor, performed for the District One-Act Play Meet held at Powell Valley, received a superior rating and performed at the One-Act Play Festival in Charlottesville. Seniors included in the cast were Cathy Cooper, Mike Stallard, Andrea Wilson and H. R. Giles. In the District Forensic Meet, H. R. Giles won first place for prose reading. Our Senior Play, The Mouse that Roared, was presented on April 17. This year we sat by as another class prepared a prom for us. The theme was Romeo and Juliet with decorations predominately light and dark blue. Kathy Tate was chosen by the class as Miss Powell Valley and James Stone as Mr. Powell Valley. The editors of the school yearbook, the Valhalla, were Susie Bailey and Nancy Bellamy. Brenda Quillen was editor of the school newspaper, the Valhi, which published a special featuring the seniors. The Class Sermon, held May 31, was given by Barry L. Rogers, Associate Executive Director, Lake Junaluska, North Carolina. On June 1, Class Day, the mock graduation exercises given for the underclassmen was held. Vicki Galloway gave our class history, and Nancy Bellamy and Brenda Quillen gave our last will and testament. Susie Bailey and Andrea Wilson gave predictions of what our futures hold. For our class, June 4 came all too soon. We wore our caps and gowns again, only this time was the last. The Salutatorian speech was given by Tony Porter, and the Valedictory address given by Audrey Stout. The Viking Band provided music. Mr. W. D. Richmond, Superintendent of Wise County Schools, presented our coveted diplomas. This year brought to a close our high school careers and a wonderful senior year, but with it came a new beginning.
