Wise County Public Library The Seniors of Powell Valley High School Big Stone Gap, Virginia Present The Eleventh Edition of the VALHALLA Wise, Virgtnia i These were the faces of Powell Valley High School, 1969-70. They were faces, smiling and frowning, work- ing and relaxing, acting and reacting. As the world has changed, so the faces of Powell Valley changed. Through the years faces come and go, but somehow, emotions they reflect strangely remain the same. In this, the Eleventh Edition of the VALHALLA, we have tried to capture these faces and their emotions. 5 PRINCIPAL J. P. HORTON Our very capable principal, Mr. J. P. President Dewey Jones Vice-President Billy Sturgill Secretary Andrea Wilson Treasurer James Stone Sponsors Miss Faith Cox Miss Callie Darnell Miss Lora Dingus Mrs. Grace Rose On June 4, Powell Valley High School graduated 109 seniors. For these 109 seniors, the 1969-1970 school year has been a very ' successful one, holding many memories for us all. Although both our class rings and calling cards were late in arriving, we soon assumed the important role of being seniors. Our year was one of learning the meaning of co-operation and realizing responsibilities that must be faced outside the secure world of school life. As our senior year drew to a close, we had many things to recall with pride. Many distinguished themselves in various activities, both in school and community. Our class officers performed their duties well. They were: Dewey Jones, President; Billy Sturgill, Vice President; Andrea Wilson, Secretary; and James Stone, Treasurer. Several seniors showed themselves to be true Vikings in athletics. Lynn Masters and Dennis Edens received awards for their outstanding performance in football. For his ability in basketball, James Stone was chosen as a member of the All-County Basketball Team and was chosen to receive the All-District Sportsmanship Award. Three seniors, Dewey Jones, James Stone, and Toby Collins, were members of the championship Viking basketball team, who won the Wise County Tournament and the season Lonesome Pine District Championship. They won the right to represent the district in the State Regional Tournaments in Blacksburg, and became the first Viking team to do so. For their outstanding sportsmanship, Carolyn Gibson and Alan Kedzierski were chosen as Miss and Mr. P.V. Spirit. Doris Manious was selected by the football players as the 1969 Homecoming Queen. Senior band members had the privilege of attending the inauguration of Big Stone Gap ' s Linwood Holton as Governor of Virginia as the Viking Band led the Inaugural parade. Andy Allen, a Senior, has done an excellent job as drum major for the past three years. Selected as a member of the All-State Band was another senior, Marjorie Mabe. Those receiving special recognition for superior scholastic ability were Tony Porter and Michael Stallard, who were both National Merit Scholarship Finalists. Others receivng special recognition were the winners of the good citizenship awards, which went to Nancy Bellamy, from the D.A.R., and to Dennis Edens, from the V.F.W. Cathy Hood received the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow Award, Andrea Wilson and Cecelia Skeen were the senior Hi-Y members attending the Model General Assembly in Richmond. The achievements of our class included dramatic ability as well. Andrea Wilson and H. R. Giles won second place in the Clinch Valley College Invitational Forensic Tournament for their performance in dual activity of the play, The Rainmaker. Hour of Honor, performed for the District One-Act Play Meet held at Powell Valley, received a superior rating and performed at the One-Act Play Festival in Charlottesville. Seniors included in the cast were Cathy Cooper, Mike Stallard, Andrea Wilson and H. R. Giles. In the District Forensic Meet, H. R. Giles won first place for prose reading. Our Senior Play, The Mouse that Roared, was presented on April 17. This year we sat by as another class prepared a prom for us. The theme was Romeo and Juliet with decorations predominately light and dark blue. Kathy Tate was chosen by the class as Miss Powell Valley and James Stone as Mr. Powell Valley. The editors of the school yearbook, the Valhalla, were Susie Bailey and Nancy Bellamy. Brenda Quillen was editor of the school newspaper, the Valhi, which published a special featuring the seniors. The Class Sermon, held May 31, was given by Barry L. Rogers, Associate Executive Director, Lake Junaluska, North Carolina. On June 1, Class Day, the mock graduation exercises given for the underclassmen was held. Vicki Galloway gave our class history, and Nancy Bellamy and Brenda Quillen gave our last will and testament. Susie Bailey and Andrea Wilson gave predictions of what our futures hold. For our class, June 4 came all too soon. We wore our caps and gowns again, only this time was the last. The Salutatorian speech was given by Tony Porter, and the Valedictory address given by Audrey Stout. The Viking Band provided music. Mr. W. D. Richmond, Superintendent of Wise County Schools, presented our coveted diplomas. This year brought to a close our high school careers and a wonderful senior year, but with it came a new beginning. Mrs. Leah Johnson Miss Beth Siphers Mrs. Evelyn Whitt Miss Sarah Broadwater As we entered Powell Valley, we felt, rather than knew, that we were standing on a threshold; ahead of us was a whole new way of life in a new school. We could look forward to everything it had to offer: new friendships, participation in clubs, activities, and sports, and that far-off dream of the day ue would fill the Senior seats in the auditorium. Again this year we were standing on a threshold. The dream that once seemed so far-off is about to become reality; soon we will be Seniors. We looked back with both pride and regret, but we looked forward with hope. There are many opportunities yet awaiting us and we hope that when we leave Powell Valley, we can have the satisfac- tion of knowing that we have made the very most of all our school has offered us and that it will be a better place for our having been there. The Powell Valley Viking Band has one of the finest reputations in Wise County. Each year it has proved this by the marching performances and the concerts it has presented for the community. The Viking Band was more than just an organiza- tion of young, eager, musicians. It has a tradition of No. 1 ratings, laughter, tears, and concentrated rehearsals, and drills. Each member realized how im- portant the band was, that it is 56 people working as one complex musical instrument. In August the band practiced for an entire week on given commands, knee lift and eight-to-five. All of this was in preparation for the Southeastern Band Festival held in Bristol. This year the band was awarded a trophy for having attended the festival for five consecutive years. Football season over, the band turned to concert music in preparation for the annual Christmas Concert with the Glee Club. We presented two Christmas parades during the Holiday Season. Then came the greatest honor the band had ever received. It was an invitation to lead the inaugural parade for the new Governor of Virginia, A. Linwood Holton. The band accepted with pride and spent the next month practicing stately marches and Ruffles and Flourishes for Virginia’s new leader. On January ' 17, 1970, the Viking Band led the parade in Richmond proudly representing Big Stone Gap and Southwest Virginia. It was a very big responsibility, but the Viking Band did an admirable job. In March, we joined efforts with the Tricky Sixty Band from Appalachia to present concerts at both schools. Both student bodies received the concerts enthusiastically. On May 15 we presented the Spring Concert. We realized the year was fleeting fast. Graduation arrived quickly and the strains of Days of Glory” marked the close of the 1969-70 session as tearful Seniors marched down the aisles. The members of the Student Council are those chosen in an election held each Spring. Each class elects two of their members to serve on the council and the entire student body elects the officers. The Student Council has worked hard this year, making great steps to benefit our school, student body, and faculty. This year, the Student Council has had several major projects. We had an orientation for the eighth grade and new students. This consisted of having a big brother” or big sister to help them become more familiar with Powell Valley. They were also given school handbooks and SCA constitutions. We sponsor Field Day, Homecoming, several record hops, and intramural basketball. We attended the SCA District Conference and the Natural Tunnel Conference of SCA. We also sponsored a Student Exchange Day with J. I. Burton High Schoo 1 . In this, we sent 7 students to J. I. Burton to spend the day and in return they sent representatives to visit Powell Valley. This greatly benefited both Councils by each making candid observations and seeing how situations were handled by each school. In December, we gave the Christmas Ball, a semi-formal dance for all Powell Valley students. We are extremely proud of the SCA and we hope that it will continue to grow and benefit our school. The Council wishes to extend our sincerest appreciation to Mr. DePriest, our sponsor, and Mr. Horton, our principal, for the interest that they have shown, and for all of the help and co-operation they have given us. Hours of practice and hard work resulted in satisfied audiences. More important, members were proud of being a part of an organiza- tion which demanded loyalty but repaid immediate dividends. Under the capable direction of Mr. Gibbs, the Glee Club performed the Christmas and the Spring Concerts for the student body of Powell Valley, East Stone Gap, and Big Stone Gap Elementary Schools. Members also participated in the District Seven All-Regional Festival at Wise. Other activities included caroling at Christmas, aiding the band in a fund raising joint appearance in December, Spring Concert, and Class Sermon. Each member was encouraged to maintain a high scholastic average, and to display good behavior as well as school spirit. Our main objective was to stimulate a greater desire in students to use the library materials wisely, to develop a wider range in reading, and to appreciate the value of the books in our library. Projects of the Library Club have included a skit entitled, A Day in the Library, which we presented for assembly, a Homecoming banner, a faculty party, celebration of National Book Week with posters made by the Art Club, attractive bulletin boards, and seasonal decorations, and also a visit to the Clinch Valley College Library and the Wise County Public Library. We wish to extend our appreciation to our librarian, Miss Billie Jean Scott, for her patience in training each of us to help our fellow students in using the library. Every member of the team should be commended for the fine performances they turned in through-out the season. Their improvement was evident especially in the great game our boys gave the arch-rival Appalachia. We came within seven points of upsetting the district-leading Bulldogs. In addition to receiving a Team Sportsmanship award, several in- dividual players were honored. Named to the Lonesome Pine All- District Team were seven players, Dennis Edens, Lynn Masters, Pat Murphy, Bob Coughlin, Bill Berta, Darrell Stanley, Larry Daniels. We are grateful to the fine leadership given by our coaching staff, Cecil Maddux, and Robert Collins. The many hours of hard work and encouragement that they contributed were very much appreciated by every’ member of the student body. For the first time in its ten year history, Powell Valley rang to the sweet shouts of complete victory. Our team had beaten the best and reigned supreme in the Lonesome Pine District. Led by the high-pressure shooting of James Cotton” Stone, the rebounding of Billy Joe Berta, the ball handling of Dewey Jones and Toby Collins, and the defensive work of Larry Do-do” Daniel combined to give the Vikings a string of twelve victories without a single defeat. Ranked No. 1 in Southwest Virginia, we faced the biggest game any L.P.D. team had ever faced. We were pitted against the Sullivan Central Cougars, the No. 1 ranked team in the entire state of Tennessee. Every player on our team excelled as we went on to hand the Cougars their most serious setback of the year. Ending the regular season with a 16-2 record, we had captured the Lonesome Pine District Championship. We took the Wise County crown as well, as our momentum carried us through that tournament. In the L.P.D. tournament, however, we showed signs of slowing as a strong Pound team forced us into a play-off game to decide who would go to Blacksburg. The game was a real squeaker, but the Vikings showed the drive that had carried them through the entire season as Stone’s last minute bucket won the game, 65-63. Although spirits were high, an outbreak of influenza and a strong Radford team combined to hand us a loss at Blacksburg. We are sure, however, that we can look to the future for many more equally strong teams. 94 Arnold Riggs, Manager Larry takes net. P.V. P.V. P.V. P.V. P.V. P.V. P.V. P.V. P.V. P.V. P.V. P.V. P.V.
