Ecclesiastes 3:1 A A Message to the Class of ’69 To everything there is a season, a time to every ' purpose, and for every occasion, words of advice to be offered. Seniors, thou knowest better than I that I am growing older. I ask to be kept from the fatal habit of thinking that I must say something wise on every occasion. Free me from the desire to straighten out all of your affairs. Give me the capacity to be thoughtful but not moody, helpful but not bossy. With my vast store of wisdom, it seems a pity not to use it all, but thou knowest, seniors, t hat I want a few of you as friends at the end. Mr. J. P. From the time we entered Powell Valley High School as small, frightened Pee-dabs, we knew we had the dream of sen- iorhood to cherish. That first step in our time” ladder was probably the most confusing and yet it was so much fun. We had to become accustomed to changing classes, having several different teachers, attending and participating in assem- bly programs. Sometimes we felt as though we were lost in every aspect, but we conquered the transformation and knew we would fondly remember our year as sub-freshman. As we entered our treshman year, we felt more at home. This year we were more active in clubs and began to develop the leadership qualities of the class members who were to guide our class, the organizations, and the school during our climb to our dream. During our sophomore year, we were still having our time to dream. We had advanced to the Varsity Club with our own representatives to cheer those boys on; we began to grow in confidence and spirit as we re- alized we were very close to being upper classmen and meeting the challenge of the time for reality. The year of 1967 brought us only one step from our cherished senior status, but we enjoyed this last year of dreaming as much as possible. We were juniors — proud in every way. We had the spirit and the quality to make this the best junior class in the history of Powell Valley. Enthusiastically, we began our magazine campaign and sold more magazines than any class before us. When May came, we walked into the once gym and now fairyland of Love is a Many-Splendored Thing.” We were measured for our class rings and ordered our calling cards, realizing our dream time was over and reality only months away. The fall of 1968 — our time for reality. We had reached our goal. With pride, we took our front seats in the audi- torium. Before long, our class rings arrived and we were officially seniors. The months passed, and as we walked the halls, yelled at the ball games, and attended classes, we realized we were doing these things for the last time. Again May came and brought with it graduation — not graduation for those before us, but for us — the Class of 1969. Our time for dreams, our time for reality ' — in all of this, we had a time to laugh, a time to cry, a time to win, and a time to lose. Now we have our time to remember. 14 KERMIT ALLEN The lion is not so fierce as they paint him.” ARLENE BATES Give me my friends; you can take all else.” STEPHEN BEAN His words are bonds, his love sincere.” SENIORS LARRY BEGLEY The flower of our young manhood.” ROBERT BELL All handsome men are dying, and I don ' t feel well myself.” DELORES BERRY That sovereign bliss, a wife.” BARBARA BISHOP The heart whose softness harmonized the whole.” MARGARET BISHOP Everywhere in life, the true question is not what we gain, but what we do. Our junior year has been filled with new and more challenging classes, club activities, and many thrilling moments. Altogether we have felt more responsibility. Selling magazines to earn money for the Junior-Senior Prom was the main project of the year. When we finally ordered our class rings and calling cards, we knew that we were only one step away from the coveted position of Mighty Seniors. As we plan for the coming year with high hopes, we wish sincerely to thank our sponsors for helping us make this year such an exciting and successful one. James Palmer THE VIKING BAND STORY ALL-STATE BAND MEMBERS M. Giles, Mabe, Murphy, Cole One word might well describe the 1968-69 Viking Band — success. We had wondered how we could top the 1967-68 season and lo — the Bristol Band Festival was the beautiful answer. Although Bristol, October 5, 1968, was not our first competition of the year, it was the sweetest. Hours of practice on routines and music preceded the success. The Chilhowie Apple Festival was a full dress performance. We brought home a superb rating, but by far the best news of the march- ing season was the clean sweep, a never-before first place capture, the first in the long history of our participation and one of few, if any, triple wins for any band of any division in the eighteen years of the Southeastern Band Festival. The band, the Drum Major, and the majorettes walked away with first place trophies. An average grade of 99 in band competition is difficult to attain, but we did it! It can be done! We were indulged and allowed to brag of our success. How- ever, marching season had to end. The Appalachia ball game was a fitting climax, a three drum set performance. Christmas parades sprinkled December as snow and disagreeable weather sprinkled Wise Count)-. Concert season ushered in a new music, a new determination, and renewed effort. Four of our members participated in All-State Band, held in Gate City, Virginia, on January 31, February 1, 2, 1969. Region- al Band Festival was held March 8, 1969, at Holston High School. The highlight of the concert season was the Spring Concert, May 2, 1969. This never-to-be-forgotten year ended with the graduation ex- ercises, at which time the seniors tearfully departed to the strains of Days of Glory. Thus ended this most enjoyable year, which would have been both less enjoyable and less successful, without the direction and guidance of our director, Mr. David R. Tipton. Although Glee Club requires a great deal of time and work, we feel that the satisfaction we receive from giving our performances more than compensates for the effort we put forth. Under the capable direction of Mr. Jack Gibbs, the Glee Club has performed for the student bodies of Powell Valley, Big Stone and East Stone Gap Elementary’ Schools. In addition to these, we had the privilege of presenting our annual Christmas Pageant at Appalachia High School. We performed for a Kiwanis Club luncheon and for the Senior Class Sermon. This year the Student Co-operative Association feels that it has accomplished the goals that were set at the begin- ning of the year. The members of the Student Council have tried to set a good example for all the students of Powell Valley High School. The SCA is very proud of its school and wishes to preserve the qualities and standards which are responsible for Powell Valley’s good name. We have had several major projects. An orientation for the eighth grade was conducted at the beginning of the school year. This consisted of a big brother — big sister program and the printing of SCA constitutions and school handbooks for each eighth grade student. We have sponsored Field Day, Homecoming, several record hops, intermural basketball, and attended the SCA District Conference. Two of our principal projects were Exchange Day and a Christ- mas Ball. On Exchange Day, we sent five students to Wise High School to spend the day, and on a later date, several Wise students visited Powell Valley. We discussed our school problems and exchanged ideas on how to improve these situations. The Christmas Ball was a semi-formal dance for all Powell Valley students and former graduates of the school. We are extremely proud of our organization, and we hope that it will continue to grow and benefit our school. We wish to extend our sincerest appreciation to Mr. Carnes, our sponsor, and Mr. Horton, our principal, for the in- terest they have shown and for the help they have given us. tfvzs KEY CLUB ; Sweetheart NANCY MEADOR Front to Back — Column 1: Dennis Edens, Larry Stallard, Buddy Delp, Dennis Graham, President Harr) ' Meador Andy Allen, Paul Miller, Michael Stallard, George Smith, Nicky Botts, Lynn Masters, Vice-president Paul Miller James Stone. Our work included entering the annual Keep Virginia Green” poster contest, learning to work with chalk, pastels, and oils, and drawing everything from sceneries to portraits. We strived to accomplish this with the guidance and patience of Mrs. Jarrett. THE VIKING STORY Although this was not one of the Vikings’ most successful football seasons, the team kept the spirit and desire of champions. For their excel- lent conduct during the season, they earned a Team Sportsmanship Award. The team showed improvement as the season progressed, but injuries during the last weeks managed to slow the Vikings’ pace. After giving arch-rival Appalachia a harder fight than the Bulldogs were expecting, the season ended with a 3-6-1 record. In addition to receiving the Team Sportsmanship Award, several indi- vidual members were honored. Selected to play on the Lonesome Pine All- District Team were Pat Murphy as line backer and Billy Joe Berta as offensive end. Braeuster Jackson was named to the Knoxville News-Sentinel’s All District Team as defensive back for the first team. Praise must be given to our Viking coaches, Cecil Maddux, Don Camp- bell, and Robert Collins, for the time and encouragement they have given us during the many long hours of practice and game-time. The conviction that the Vikings would be Number One grew stronger with the passing of each of the fifteen victories. Although there were only five losses during the season, they were deeply felt since four of the five were lost by only one point. The Vikings’ sweetest victories were over Gate City, Coeburn, Haysi, and Appalachia. In the Coeburn game, the school scoring record for a single game was set when the Vikings hit a total of 102 points. In the same game, Tommy Myers tied the individual school record by scoring 40 points. In the Wise County Tournament, a victory over Coeburn coupled with a breathtaking overtime win over arch-rival, Appalachia, brought the Wise County Championship Trophy home with the Vikings. Powell Valley had succeeded; The Vikings were Number One!’’ Two Vikings were chosen as members of the All-County team: Billy Joe Berta and James Stone. Although the Vikings suffered a one-point” loss in their first night in the Lonesome Pine District Tournament, the Viking season of 1968-69 w ' as one to be remembered. Since the team loses only tw ' o seniors, the 1969-70 season shows great promise. -r PV . . . . 71 Ervinton . . .
