V The Seniors of Powell Valley High School Big Stone Gap, Virginia Present The Ninth Edition of the VALHALLA Foreword Like the Vikings of old who believed that the souls of their heroes slain in battle went to rest in Valhalla, we consign the pleasant memories of another school year to this, the Ninth Edition of the VALHALLA. Wise County Public Library Wise, Virginia ■ ' is v n Y ng TABLE OF CONTENTS Administration 6 Classes 11 Organizations 47 Athletics 73 Features 85 Advertisements 100 Dr. Kelly was superintendent of schools in Wise County for 48 years, from 1917 until his retirement in 1963. Under his leadership, the Wise County school system was the first in Virginia to organize tuition-free regular summer schools; the first to place all teachers on the same salary basis - men and women, high school and elementary teachers, white and Negro; the first to employ principals on a 12- month basis and offer a regular nine-month schedule in all schools in the system; the first to promote a five-year high school; the first to establish and maintain a county-wide vocational school and place home economics and business education in the curricula of county high schools. Impressive as his accomplishments for the Wise Coun ty school system were, Dr. Kelly remained a leader for other reasons. He possessed integrity, strength, wisdom, and farsightedness. He was a gentle- man. We can think of no finer tribute to pay him. 3 ALMA MATER To Vikings bold we give our love, Our dreams, our tributes true. Through life’s full course our hearts will move To bring you honor too. So hail to thee, O noble school: Stand firm and strong and right; And may we ever look to thee For strength, love, and purity. 4 What is Powell Valley High School? Is it the building? Yes, in one sense of the word, Powell Valley High School is a building; but the building alone isn’t enough. Is it teachers? Yes, Powell Valley High School is teachers. Is it students? Yes, it is students. Is it extracurricular activities? Yes, it is athletic contests, organizations, parades, and a multitude of other activities. Building, teachers, students, activi- ties must all be present to make Powell Valley High School. We can say Powell Valley High School ex- ists because we can record in this VALHALLA pictures of each facet of another school year. But the real Powell Valley High School cannot be caught on film; it is intangible. We can feel esprit de corps. At its best Powell Valley High School is a combination of plant, teachers, and students working together to learn facts and to achieve understandings which will help students to become well-inlormed citizens capable of taking their places in the complex world of the future. Powell Valley High School is a good school only to the extent that her student body and graduates have gained this knowledge and insight. 5 ADMINISTRATION Principal, MR. J. P. HORTON Secretary MRS. We, as mighty Seniors, have felt as if we ruled the roost.” We have had more challenging subjects, more freedom to use our own ideas, innumerable thrilling moments such as the day our class rings came. For each individual making up our graduating Class of 1968, the year held a little something different. For some there was the uncertain excitement of college boards, acceptances, and plans for future education. For others the year represented the final step before entering the business world. Some of us will soon be in the service of our country and others will be the homemakers of the future. Many of us have already distinguished ourselves. One of our members is the first Merit Scholar Semi-Finalist for our high school, one traveled to Europe on tour with the All Student Band U.S.A., and all three Homecoming Queens have been selected from our class. We have won prizes for homemaking, citizenship, speaking, and achievement in impor- tant subjects. We have been a hard working group, selling magazines for the Prom and staging it last year. Holding offices and doing necessary jobs around school this year kept us going at a fast pace. As we stand in the graduation processional with all the outw r ard symbols of our Seniorhood around us, the most important emblem is the mark on each of our hearts left by our memories of things that have been and our hopes of things to come. This year, we have felt more responsibility and a larger place in school. We can now recall all the events that have made this year so exciting. Our year has been filled with classes, tests, club activities, and much pleasure. Raising money for the Junior-Senior Prom was one of the highlights of the year. At last we or- dered our class rings and chose our calling cards. The Prom and graduation made us real- ize that we are very close to being Mighty Seniors. THE VIKING BAND STORY An eventful year it was for the Viking Band, one that the 1967-68 band mem- bers will not be likely to forget. There were a few things that were as usual: the practice, practice, practice; the parades, parades, parades; the tired feet; the lost music; the cold hands; the excited thrill of the first football game. But was the year different! Our new uniforms didn’t arrive and didn’t arrive and didn’t arrive. Our instruments were stolen. It seemed almost as if a miracle had occurred when the weather improved, the uniforms finally arrived, we won a Division I, and the majorettes won second place in their class at the Bristol Band Festival. In fact, we wondered, Who could ask for anything more?” But more came. We won a trophy in the First Annual Lonesome Pine Festival held at Wise. In combination with the Glee Club we presented a Winter Concert. Seven band members went to All-State Band held at Pulaski. We presented our annual Spring Concert. We watched new members grow to be old pros and old pros ] grow r to be alumni. We watched a well traveled and well seasoned musician, Jim i Bob Lile, return from a tour of Europe w ' ith the All Student Band, USA. All of these activities were exciting, but the highlight of the year was none of these. The trip to the Mardi Gras in New r Orleans was the zenith, the high point of our year. We rehearsed in freezing and sub-freezing weather. We enlisted the aid of everyone in our venture. We cooked spaghetti. Mothers baked cakes, cookies, I and other goodies. The Band Boosters took to the TV and Klub Kwdz became a regular Friday night affair. Weary band members marched 8.3 miles and man- f aged to look snappy at the end. We shall always be grateful to Mr. Flanary of the Appalachia Band who ably came to our assistance at a time when we needed him. I But all honor and praise go to our capable, patient band director, Mr. David Tipton. It takes a great deal of time and work, but it gives us great satisfaction, and we can think of no better way of starting off the day than with a song. | Music produces love and happiness. This is why each member puts forth just a little more effort in the Glee Club. Most mornings a student can hear music coming from the Choral Room; music produced by boys and girls who enjoy sing- ing. Our meetings demand much time and serious practice, but our accomplishments are well received by those who enjoy good music. We each feel that our efforts would have been in vain without the capable guidance of our director, Mr. Jack Gibbs. Some of our projects were sponsoring homecoming activities and ceremonies, a Field Day, orientating the eighth graders, sponsoring intramural basket- ball games, announcing assembly programs, participating in a student exchange day with Wise, and securing a planter for the school’s sign. We sent representatives to plan the Natural Tunnel District Conference and we represented our school to the best of our ability at the conference. We are very proud of our accomplishments this year and hope that the SCA’s of future years will carry on the torch we car- ried through 1968. The Girl’s Athletic Association helps girls develop patterns of wholesome and effective behavior in areas of human rela- tions, use of leisure time, and the qualities which contribute to successful living. In order to be a member of the GAA, a girl must have an 80 average in her academic work, 85 average in physical educa- tion, and a genuine interest in sports. We sold Viking stickers to raise money for our club, played basketball mornings before school and sponsored various sports activities. We wish to express our appreciation to our sponsor, Mrs. Orpha Chandler, for her guidance and leadership. 77 Left to Right - Row 1: Coach Maddux, Gary Perdue, Michael Mason, Cheryl Bolling, Deborah Strang, Kathy Tate, Doris Mainous, Leta Ann Taylor, Robert Tuck, Bill Chandler, Coach Campbell, Row 2: Michael Blevins, Ronnie Coughlin, Pat Murphy, John Gilley, Gar)’ Mahan, Darrell Chandler, Roger Wade, Johnny Sand- ers, Spencer Quesenberry, Jackie Chandler. Dennis Edens Toby Collins Kathy Tate ,Mr. Don Campbell Mr. Cecil Maddux The Varsity Club consists of those people who have lettered in inter-scholastic sports or who have been managers or cheer- leaders. The purpose of giving letters is to promote better sportsmanship and understanding among all students and athletes. The recipients of these letters have devoted much of their time in order to earn them. They arc proud of the monogram and the organization. Membership in the Varsity Club is certainly a great honor to attain. THE VIKING STORY A great football team is not measured by the number of games won or lost. A great team is built on spirit, desire, and the determination. Even with a 1-9 record it was difficult to find fault with the 1967 Vikings. The team, although, beset by in- juries, never lost heart. Randy Edens was selected by the coaches of the Lonesome Pine District to receive the Lonesome Pine Good Sportsmanship Award. Another honored player was Spencer Quesenberry, who was selected as defensive end for the All District Team. Randy Edens and Spencer Quesenberry were selected for positions on the second team along with Gary Mahan and Johnny Sanders, who received honorable mention for the Knoxville ’News-Sentinel’s All District Team. Our coaches, Cecil Maddux and Don Campbell, are the best and our Vikings are a great team. Along with a 21-4 record, the Vikings brought home the runner-up trophy and the Lonesome Pine District trophy. Shine was added to the season by the exploits of individual players especially the new 40 point record set by Randy Fleenor on the night he broke the 1000 point mark. Coach Don Campbell, although he loses 5 excellent seniors, has fine material coming up and the future is indeed bright for Powell Valley.
