It is more gratifying to look fo the future where the stars and dreams are bright than it is to look back at what cannot be changed. We, the Senior Class of 1966, are proud of our history but eagerly, yet anxiously at times, await the future in anticipation of brighter and newer horizons. Each year the graduating class leaves a mark of distinction with the school. It may not be specifically named, but it is embedded in the tradition, memory, and soul of the school. No alumnus can return to his alma mater and honestly say there has been no change. The changes may not be in the physical plant, but there are changes that have been initiated, nursed, and realized by the students and the faculty. Changes that were once dreams become part of the routine—changes that cannot be named but are ever with us. Powell Valley has given to us. Could a value be placed on learning to live? Could a value be placed on knowledge? Could a value be placed on friends? We are indebted to Powell Valley, but we can never repay this debt. Each year Powell Valley goes through a carnival of events, designed for the students ' entertainment and education. We have experienced all of these—the thrill of the first day of school, the insecurity of being a sub-freshman, the fellowship of clubs, the heartbeat of the thrilling moments in sports, the pondering over a math problem, the band and Glee Club concerts, the weekly assembly programs, the English assignments that we can ' t wait to get, the Homecoming Dance and the Junior-Senior Prom, taking College Board Exams, and other events, too numerous to mention. We have loved it. We shall miss the security of high school. Responsi¬ bility is frightening, but we will accept the responsibility of being an adult more easily because of our preparation in high school. It is our hope that Powell Valley is a better place in which to live and learn because we have been there: this is all we can offer, for it ' s all we have. Each day a flag is raised in front of Powell Valley. This will never change. The love of freedom that our flag symbolizes is part of our very soul. We dearly love it and are ready to die for it. It is time for us to part and we say to you, Powell Valley, Goodby... 24 Senior Directory LLOYD COY BARNETTE-Art Club 4; K.V.G. 1, 2, 3 JOHN EDWARD BLACK-Key Club 3, 4, 5; Varsity Club 2, 3, 4, 5; Football 1, 2, 4, 5; Basketball 1, 2, 3, 4, 5; French Club 4 (honorary 5) DENNIS CREED BLANTON-Key Club 2, 3, 4, 5; Track 3; Art Club 3; Roman Club 1, 2; 4-H Club 2; K.V.G. 4; Booster Club 4 DANNY JOE BLEDSOE—Football 1, 2, 3, 4,; Track 3; Art Club 3; Roman Club 2, 3; VA LHALLA Staff 5 (Business Manager) LARRY FRANK BRUNER—Football 1, 2, 3, 4, 5; Bas¬ ketball 3, 5; Track 4, 5; Varsity Club 4, 5; French Club 3 (honorary 4, 5); Booster Club 4; K.V.G. 5; 4-H Club 5 MERTON CAMPBELL CAWOOD-S.C.A. Mr. David Tipton Libby Gillenwafer Drum Major Viking Band Director: Mr. David Tipton Looking back over the year ' s work of ' 65- ' 66 our Band can say with pride that it was a satisfactory and successful year. From the first blast of Libby ' s whistle in August to the all- important moment on October 2 at the annual Bristol Band Festival, afternoons were spent marching on the field, practicing music, working up dance routines, pleading for rest breaks (usually not getting them) and somehow ending with good shows. Then all this work proved worthwhile when we brought back from the Chilhowie Apple Blossom Festival a Division I trophy and two weeks later from Bristol the only Division I trophy received by a Wise County band. The next few weeks were put into studying basic musical terms and rhythms, then Christmas carols were rehearsed before the Band participated in two Christmas parades sponsored by the merchants of Big Stone Gap. On February 4, 5, and 6 the All-State Band West was held at Powell Valley for the first time in the history of the school. A total of 168 students were involved, including seven Vikings. This profitable week end brought people from many surrounding areas and brought much credit to our school. As spring rushed along, hard work was again the prescription. Many hours were spent working on music for the Regional Festival. Soon after was the annual Spring Concert, high¬ lighted by the presentation of the McChesney award. With the close of the year, the Band had several suggestions and ideas to consider for a summer trip. Much thanks must go to Libby Gillenwater, our drum major; Mrs. David Tipton, majorette instructor; and especially Mr. Tipton, our director and drillmaster. During its second year the Student Co-operative Association has continued to grow, making greater strides toward fulfilling its aim of benefiting the school, student body, and faculty. One of our main goals for this year was the fulfillment of the state S.C.A. theme, FIRST . Among our projects we can list the following: orienting the eighth graders, sponsoring the homecoming ceremonies, selling bleacher seats, sponsoring intramural basketball games, purchasing a new national flag for our school, and establishing a fund to purchase a school sign. But we are proudest of another of our accomplishments. This year we were host to the first meeting held in several years of the Natural Tunnel District of the State S.C.A., and we hope that through our efforts our district will be reactivated. We also presented a talent program in Assembly, called Whing Ding. Our other money making project was the sale of Viking car tags, displaying the school emblem and colors. We achieved an Ace Rating for the two years, 1963-64 and 1 964-65. We are trying to achieve this rating for five consecutive years, at which time we will earn a Placque, presented by the YMCA. The recreational nature of the G. A. A. is basic to all other functions. In order to become a member, one must maintain an 85 average in her academic work, 90 in physical education, and must display competence in physical educa¬ tion activities. The activities of the Athletic Association are under the supervision of our capable sponsor, Mrs. Chandler. 76 Jimmy Adkins (Tackle) Tony Simpson (Guard) Larry Bush (Halfback) Robert Tuck (End) Robert Carroll (Guard) The Vikings Coach: Garnett Gilliam Assistant Coaches: Cecil Maddux Rexal Carnes Don Campbell Assistant J.V. The Viking Story With a squad consisting of only seven seniors sprinkled among underclassmen, the 1965 edition of the Vikings posted their most successful campaign in five years. The Big Red and Blue began their season on an unhappy note, dropping their initial tilt 13-12 to the Wise Indians. The Vikings roared back, however, to cop seven victories in their next eight starts. Much of the success of our 7-3 record was due to the excellent leadership of tri¬ captains Joe Fox, Bo Lane, and Johnny Black, and also the great spirit of unity and teamwork displayed by the squad as a whole. Not enough praise can be given our coaches, Garnett Gilliam, Cecil Maddux, and Rexal Carnes, who completely dedicated themselves to the task of making us a winning team. Johnny Black Basketball Varsity Coach: Mr. Don Campbell Junior Varsity Coach: Mr. Cecil Maddux Under the first year direction of Coach Don Campbell, the Vikings compiled an 8-12 mark. The team showed certain signs, of future greatness, however, as an array of sophomores and juniors saw much game action. Among the high points of the season were the fired-up team play against powerful Gate City, Johnny Black ' s cracking the 1,000 point barrier, and the two regular season victories over Appalachia. The team found the going rough in the Wise County Tournament as they were eliminated in the first round by Appalachia 72-52, in a rough- and-tumble affair. Again, in the Lonesome Pine Tournament, the Vikings were upset victims of Coeburn 66-51. mJ Randy Fleenor Elbert Bush Eddie Toney Kent Gilley VARSITY SCHEDULE AND SCORES Appalachia 43 PV 45 Pound 76 PV 57 Pound 69 PV 45 Pennington 57 PV 43 Pennington 62 PV 63 Wise 74 PV 72 Wise 68 PV 59 Haysi 63 PV 79 Haysi 81 PV 67 Gate City 79 PV 61 Gate City 65 PV 59 Ervinton 53 PV 68 Ervinton 49 PV 75 Coeburn 63 PV 65 Clintwood 53 PV 64 Clintwood 59 PV 62 Norton 72 PV 61 Appalachia 72 PV 52 Appalachia 58 PV 59 Coeburn 66 PV 51 82 Junior Varsity Left to Right—Kneeling: Tommy Myers, Frank Nickels, Glen Kelly, Toby Collins, Michael Mason. The boys lost several close games, but they showed diligence in working at the fundamentals of the game, which is one of the major objectives of J.V. basketball. These are the boys who will be counted upon to furnish the varsity, so it is evident that we can look forward to successful seasons if the improvements shown at the season ' s end is continued. The pitching staff, paced by Jimmy Kelly, carried the brunt of the attack as the hitters failed to come through. The goal of this season ' s Vikings will be to coordinate their hitting and pitching. We are sure that they will return to the leader that they annually are in Wise County baseball circles. The Vikings posted one of their most successful track seasons ever as they placed second in the Dis¬ trict track meet. Tremendous individual talent and ef¬ fort were abundant as Coach Garnett Gilliam ' s forces took the field. Surely, the achievements of last season ' s track team will be a challenge for teams to come.
