Binkley, Herron. Wheatley There we were — Seniors at last. It meant many different things to each of us. But to all of us it meant feeling that we were distinctly above the underclassmen, sitting on the first rows of the auditorium, having our long-awaited class rings, and nearing the end of the greatest security we would ever know. We all remembered when we first came to Powell Valley. We were skeptical: we were happy and laughing: we were scared! And more often than not, we were lost. We soon overcame our fright and relaxed. The prospect of attending ball games as full-fledged students was an exciting one. To the delight of the cheerleaders, we yelled ourselves hoarse, because It made us feel Important. Our freshman year rolled around. At last we were eligible to join some clubs. How thrilled we were! And we were proud because we weren ' t Pee-Dabs any more. The fall of 1962 marked the beginning of our sophomore year. We were right In the ml ddle, with many important things behind us, and yet so many more Important deci- sions facing us. Now we had to decide what we really wanted to accomplish In the coming years. Would our plans Include college, a job, or marriage after receiving that coveted diploma? Our dear exciting junior year came marching In through the doors of time. Tests, tests, tests — Scat and Step Included — marched right in too. Time hurried that year, and before we knew It, we were selling magazines for our Prom, DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES. No one except ourselves knew the happiness and the sense of accomplishment we felt as we walked into that finished gym with our dates. And no one except past seniors could know how wonderful we felt when finally we ordered our class rings and our calling cards. The BIS YEAR arrived on wings and flew by. We realized that each assembly and ball game we attended would be among the last as students of Powell Valley. That realization hurt, and yet, the prospect of something new challenged us to be brave. We were Seniors at last, standing on the threshold of a new life. We were leaving the security and youthful happiness of Powell Valley High S.chool with joyful, happy, and In many cases tear-stained faces. The strains of Pomp and Circumstance still echoed In our ears, and we clutched a diploma and a ' 65 tassel In our hands. It was difficult to think that twelve years had passed so quickly, and we hesitated. We hesitated, and then we stepped forward — forward Into our new life, leaving our alma mater behind. Yes, we were leaving Powell Valley behind, but not forgotten — never forgotten. This year we have felt more responsibility and a larger place in school. For the past three years we have enjoyed and participated In sports, clubs, and various other activities. For many of us this has been very rewarding and has helped us to take a step toward more responsibility. We looked forward to our own Junior-Senior Prom, the measuring of our class rings and finally the day when we could say we are mighty seniors. We have reached a higher step, making new friendships and renewing old ones, meeting new responsibilities, and facing new challenges. There are many goals in our lives; two of the main ones are to set a good example for underclassmen, and to plan for our imminent graduation. We wish to thank Powell Valley High School for its many fine qualities that have brought us this far. We felt dig- nified and fortunate to be enrolled in our beautiful school. Having lockers of our own, changing classes, joining different clubs, having a regular study hall, having a well equipped library and gym; all these things plus others made us proud to be a part of our school. For the first time in the history of Powell Valley High School, the Junior Varsity bas- ketball team was ably supported by three of our girls who were elected Junior Varsity cheerleaders. Without the wise advice, leadership, and understanding of our teachers, we would not have progressed as well as we did during our first year at Powell Valley High. It Is with pride that we salute our new director and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. David Tipton. Their efforts on our behalf have been more than adequate. As in previous seasons, our main task of performing at the football games was accomplished with satisfaction. The next-to-superlor performance at the Bristol Band Festival in early October gave us renewed faith that the transition period would succeed. V e were privileged to perform at the Lee County Tobacco Festival, and over WJHL television, as well as in many other parades and competi- tions. This year the McChesney Band Award was founded. It is to be presented to the outstanding senior band member each year. The McChesneys and their influence on the Powell Valley High School Band and on band music in our school makes this a very coveted honor. These members maintain a high scholastic average and possess other excellent qualities. The Library Club is not all work and no play. In September a picnic for new members was held at Bullitt Park. In November, National Book Week was celebrated through a lively assembly program. A Christmas Party for the faculty was held in December and new books were displayed at that time. Other activities planned Included visits to other libraries and a P. T. A. program in the spring. Preparing the bulletin board and decorating the library were always pleasurable tasks. The m.ain objective of our club is to help individuals improve personal, family, and community living. Each year, the F.H.A. selects specific goals to guide its group activities toward better living. This year we selected The Teenage Consumer as our main project. THE VIKING STORY Although the Vikings had only seven returning letter- men, there were quite a few promising players who moved up from the J. V. and B teams of previous years. The team was plagued with an unusual number .of injuries, however, and a lot of the boys were sidelined for one or more games. Despite the Injuries and Inexperience, the skillful Instruction of Head Coach Gilliam and Coaches Maddux, Campbell, and Herron enabled fhe team to sur- prise a few of the top teams in the District and to beat Appalachia, our biggest rival. At the end of the season the lettermen elected Jody Fox and Earl Mumpower co- captains for 1 964. To bolster team spirit and Individual initiative awards were given to the best offensive and defensive linemen and backs. Topping fhese, an award was given to the Most Valuable Player. This year ' s winner of this coveted award was given to quarterback Jody Fox. The other win- ners were Best Offensive Lineman, Danny Possom Boll- ing; Best Defensive Lineman, Jimmy Adkins; Besf Offen- sive Back, Charles Bo Lane; and Best Defensive Back, Johnny Black. The Vikings placed four members on fhe All Disfrict Team. Johnny Black was First Team Defensive Line- Seniors backer; Charles Lane, First Team Offensive Halfback: Randy Edens, Second Team Offensive Guard; and Danny Bolling, Second Team Defensive Linebacker. The Junior Varsity, consisting of eighth and ninth grad- ers, made a good showing this year. They finished with a 4-1-1 record, which is a good record no matter how one looks at it. Coach Don Campbell, with the able assistance of Coach Roger Herron, did a very good job. Both stu- dents and coaches are to be commended for a job well done. Sam McCorkle was named Best Defensive Player, and Tommy Graham was named Best Offensive Player. SCHEDULES AND SCORES Powell Valley 0 Gate City 25 Powell Valley 13 St. Charles 0 Powell Valley 0 J. 1. It seemed that the boys might go for the best season ever, but good luck turned to bad and the Vikings lost several tough games in a row. In the Wise County Tournament, the team edged Coeburn 59-55 in the last few seconds of play — thanks to the accurate free-throw shooting of Terry Simmons. Good luck turned bad again as the Vikings were eliminated by Norton In the semifinals. In the Lonesome Pine Tournament, the Vikings were victims of an Appalachia upset victory in the first round.
