High School League VALHALLA 1964 Presented by Senior Class of Poweli Valley High School Big Stone Gap, Virginia Editors Teresa Damon Shirley Sorah Business Managers Ear! Kilbourne, Jr. Giiberl- Knight Leslie Quesenberry Mary E. Quillen WE HONOR Mrs. Sam H. McChesney We, the 1964 VALHALLA staff, take this opportunity to pay tribute to Mrs. Sam H. McChesney, who through the years has contributed hours of instruction, kindness, understanding , and patience to the students she has taught. In a special way Mrs. Mac has played a unique part in helping an entire community learn to appreciate good music. During her years as band director she has watched a handful of interested students multiply. But it isn ' t just band size that has multiplied. Mrs. Mac ' s admirers have increased too. Her bands have won the respect not only of the laymen of the area but also of the Judges throughout the country. How did Mrs. Mac acquire this respect? We who have been close to her know the secret. She has demanded much from her students, but she has demanded even more from herself. Together with Mr. Mac, her late beloved Sam, she has left an indelible mark on the life of our community. As she retires, we wish her many more years of rewarding activities. 2 Hands of time carved the beautiful Powell Valley, the setting for Powell Valley High School ALMA MATER To Vikings bold we give our love, Our dreams, our tributes true. Miss Lora Dingus Mrs. Grace Rose SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Now, as we stand on the threshold of a new beginning, it seems impossible that five years have passed since we first entered Powell Valley High School. We were so sure that we were the most important people in the world, because we were in high school. With the aid of many upperclassmen, we soon learned our true stations. We were pee-dabs to the other stu- dents and know-nothings to the teachers. We learned that respect and friendship did not come automatically with high school, but had to be earned. We were truly excited, because we were to be the first class to begin the eighth grade at Powell Valley. Each of us remembers with mixed feelings those first few days here. All the rooms looked exactly alike, right down to the cardboard boxes laughingly referred to as trash-cans. But fortunately we were not alone, for that first week every- body wandered into rooms searching for the right one. One of the greatest thrills came with the beginning of football season. Now we had a team of our own for which to yell our hearts out. And yell, we did! If nobody else really appreciated us those first few months, the cheerleaders did for we gave them all our support. Throughout basketball, track, and baseball seasons, we gave our all to become part of Powell Valley. The fall of I960 opened our ninth grade, which passed amazingly fast. We were finally able to join clubs and begin really giving of ourselves to our school and community. Our boys began playing junior varsity football and basketball. They laid the foundations for their important roles in sports in the future. The tenth grade marked a turning point in our lives. Here we began to realize that scholastic achievements are important. To bridge this transitional period, we were forced to become more serious in our studies. On the lighter side, our social schedule was filled with ball games and Key Club record hops on the week-ends. In the eleventh grade, we began to make long-range plans and to try to find answers to several questions. What are my plans for the future? Am I going into college after graduation? Or will I get married after graduation? That year we sold magazine subscriptions to help pay for our Junior-Senior Prom. It was truly the best one ever given. We worked Jong hours making flowers and stars to decorate for our theme, Al Dl La. All our work was worth the effort, for the prom really crowned a wonderful year. Now here we stand, remembering most vividly this past year with its rush, rush, rush. We kept saying, I can ' t wait to leave. Yet, here we are with tear-stained cheeks, _ wishing we could begin all over. We want once more to experience the pride we felt as we took our seats in front of the auditorium for assemblies. We want to relive the excitement of planning for our Washington-New York trip during spring vacation. We want to walk down these halls once more and to laugh and talk with our friends. We want to feel that we are still a part of this school. But those days are gone. We must go forward. Yes, this has been our most exciting year. And now, as we march down this aisle for the last time, we pause briefly to bid farewell to that security and happiness which dear old Powell Valley High has so generously given us. In the future, we will be able to look back with pride at our accomplishments and say, That was our moment of glory. 21 SENIOR DIRECTORY BILLY FRANKLIN ALLEN ' — K.V.G. 2, 3,4, 5; Art Club 3, 4; D.E. 4, 5 (President) HAROLD JAMES ALLEN — French Club 3; Glee Club 4; D.E. 5 FRED ALLEN BAKER — Football I, 2, 3, 4, 5; Basketball I, 2, 3, 4, 5; French Club 3; Baseball 3, 4, 5; K.V.G. 3, 4, 5: Varsity Club 4, 5; Track 4, 5; Speech Club 5 WILMA JEAN BENNETT— Pixies 2, 3 WILLIAM EDWARD BLACK— D.E. 5; WOB + NY BETHEL IRIS BLEDSOE— G.A.A. 2; French Club 3, 4; Valhi Staff 4; Hl-Y 4; F.B.L.A. 4, 5; Valhalla Staff 5 (Typist) BILLY JOE BRADY— Spanish Club 3, 4; Speech Club 5 (Treasurer) GERALD WAYNE BREEDING — Football 2, 3, 4, 5 (Co-Captain); Varsity Club 4 (All District), 5; Glee Club 3, 4, 5 (President): Spanish Club 3, 4 (Secretary): Class Treasurer I: Class President 3; Class Vice-President 4; Bi-Phy-Chem 3; Speech Club 5; Art Club 5 (Treasurer): Baseball 3, 4, 5; WOB-f- NY JOHN PALMER BURKE — Roman Club 4, 5; Glee Club 5 ROY LEE BURKE — Art Club 4, 5 (Treasurer) LUTHER CHURCH, JR. — Art Club 4 (President), 5; French Club 4, 5; WOB-pNY GALE EDWARD COLE— Art Club 4, 5: D.E. 5 SONIA KAY COLLIER — Roman Club 2, 3, (Honorary Member 4, 5); Band I, 2, 3, 4, 5; Speech Club 4; G.A.A. 5; Hl-Y 5; Valhi Staff 5; WOB + NY CHAROLETTE JEAN COLLINS— F.H.A. 2, 3: 4-H Club 2: F.B.L.A. 4: Speech Club 5: Bi-Phy-Chem 5 GEORGE COLLINS, JR. — Junior Varsity Basketball I, 2; Varsity Football 4; K.V.G. 4, 5: D.E. 5 WAYNE HAROLD COLLINS— Speech Club 4: Art Club 5; French Club 5: 4-H Club 5 (Reporter) HELEN FRANCES COMBS— F.H.A. Carty The bell rang as It always had to start a new year at Powell Valley High School; but this time as we filed Into our classrooms, we were accompanied by the dignified feel- ing that we were JUNIORS. This year we found a number of activities with a large number of juniors participat- ing in clubs and organizations. By participating In these clubs, we became more mature In many ways. Sports, football and basketball, gave us an opportunity to perform or to observe. We looked forward to the Junior-Senior Prom, which was held In May. All these activities will hold pleasant memories, but the climax of the junior year was the day when we received our report cards and became the proud seniors of Powell Valley High School. We can now feel that we are a part of the school because we can join more clubs and participate In more school activities. The freshman year Is really a whole new phase of school life. It is a period of adjust- ment. In the eighth grade, we had no choice of subjects. We took the subjects that were required. Now we must become accustomed to the responsibility of planning our own courses. We took our first step in entering a completely different way of life. We were beginning our school career in a new and modern school. We were very excited to have our own lockers for the first time. We enjoyed the feeling of dignity and impor- tance as we hurried from one class to another. We cherished the study hall which enabled us to get our lessons for the next day or the one we had forgotten. Most of all we were excited about the library. We could check out books, consult the card catalogue for books we could not find by ourselves, and look up important events for reports. We looked to our teachers for wise leadership and understanding throughout the year. Most of all we are looking forward to receiving our diplomas from Powell Valley High. Each month, the staff focuses Its attention on a special season, and scouts the news to carry out that theme. This year, with an abundance of reporters and despite a shortage of typists, the VALHI was pub- lished eight times; and record sales were recorded. In our modern world, it Is becoming more and more necessary that one be able to express one ' s self In writing. Reporting for the VALHI gives one the opportunity to improve her expression, gram- mar, and technique, and also provides an outlet for talents along this line. In order to join, one must not only have an 85 over-all average, but also exhibit a true interest in library science. Our by-word is service, and we do our best to help those looking for information. Most students, often seeing library aids with their date-due stamps in hand, believe that this is all we have to do. One day with us would show how much work must be done behind the scenes to keep the library running .smoothly. Books must be checked out, renewed, matched with their cards, and shelved. Authors must be located; card catalogs, dictionaries, and periodical guides must be consulted. Magazines must be changed weekly and arranged daily. All these things we learn to do until they become almost second-nature to us. And just when we think weVe learned all there is to know about our library, a student asks us a cjuestion for which we just can ' t find the answer. We can always feel free to confront Miss Scott with just this type of problem. She is our sponsor, guide, and second mother. She takes the time to know each assistant individually, and we all appreciate her patient understanding quality here at Powell Valley. Sutherland, Skeen, Lile. J. After a few introductory remarks, uniforms were issued in the usual manner, the date for the first practice was announced, and foot- ball season was under way. The boys were young, small, and inexperienced, but under the skillful instruction of our coaching staff, Coaches Gilliam, Maddux, and Campbell, we whittled the recruits into varsity, junior varsity, and peanut teams. Our record for the year turned out better than was predicted. All in all, the year proved to be eventful and educational for the ' 63 Vikings on the gridiron. 76 J. Under the leadership of Coach Maddux the Vikings finished the season with a 5-14 record. Yet, this record doesn ' t tell all the story. Exciting games with Interested fans marked the season as a whole. Especially tense was the Clintwood game with the Vikings losing by one point. On the Junior Varsity squad rests the hope of seasons to come. Hours of practice are required before any boy can play well and individual boys can operate smoothly as a team.
