BASCOM SLEMP MEMORIAL LIBRARY BIG STONE GAP, VIRGINIA WE HONOR DR. J. J. KELLY, JR. In this day and age of change it is rare for one man to hold the same position for forty-six years. It is even rarer, especially in the field of public education, for honor and recognition to be given an educator in his lifetime. At the same time it is the unusual educator who can span four decades of change in the profession and can remain a highly respected leader at all times. We, the VALHALLA staff, as well as thousands throughout the State of Vir¬ ginia, feel that DR. J. J. KELLY, JR., Division Superintendent of Wise County Schools, is indeed an extraordinary educator. It is he who has successfully engineered and directed the development of a school system which has as its basic philosophy the development of each child to his capacity. We have looked to Dr. Kelly for wise leader¬ ship and sympathetic understanding throughout the years. As he retires from active service, we feel sure that he will retain an interest in the school system which has been his life. We will continue to look to him for guidance in the future, but to DR. J. J. KELLY, JR. we wish many years of well-deserved retirement. 2 At work on the job At work in the office Wise County Citizen SISiil ■ I .. U...L..1 . Francis Williams - Sonia Black Barbara Wagner Mrs. Wilma Brooks Miss Callie Darnell Miss Lora Dingus How fast twelve years passed. And yet how slowly the days seemed to move at times. The days before a big sports event, a holiday, or a social activity dragged. But graduation arrived too fast for some of us—quickly enough for others. As a high school student we enjoyed security—a security that we have lost as we left Powell Valley High School. As we look back at the high school years we remember vividly our four years at Powell Valley High School. We could never forget our freshman year. This was the critical year of adjustment into high school activities. We were filled with pride to be a part of this great school. Our sophomore year flashes through our minds as a year of settling down and working hard on the courses we had chosen. The next year was our cherished jun¬ ior year. We sold magazines to raise money for our prom—“Springtime in Paris” and for our edition of the VALHALLA. We all have fond memories as we think back to the prom—the pride we felt that night as we walked into the gym and saw the results of all our hours of careful planning. As the junior year fades out of sight, we see ourselves excited over ordering our class rings and our calling cards. The summer following our junior year brought many pleasant memories for our representatives to Girls’ and Boys’ State. Once more on August 22, we entered Powell Valley High School. This time it was for our final year—the big year. There was much excitement and anticipation of finding out in which homeroom we would be. Our rings arrived on October 21. At last we had our first material proof that we had achieved seniorhood. We began making plans for the Washington trip. The senior play was another highlight this year. We’ll always remember the fine job the cast did with the help of the directors. How could we ever forget that beautiful prom the juniors gave us this year. In May the strains of “Pomp and Circumstance” began to float through the halls. Then came the big night when we marched down the aisle to receive our diplomas. We marched proudly, but our vision was blurred by a tear or two that escaped. Then before we realized it, we were marching back up the aisle—each to a different destiny. 10 ROBERT ALLMAN “He hath a heart as sound as a bell.” ALETHIA WATKINS ANDERSON “Honest labor bears a lovely face.” WAYNE ARTRIP “Enjoy youth today, for tomor¬ row you will be old.” LINDA BERRY “Better be small and shine, than large and cast a shadow.” SENIORS DeETTE BLACK “Smart, attractive, with a pleasant grin; what a pleasure knowing her has been.” SONIA BLACK “She that was ever fair and never proud.” JOHNNY BLANTON “Life without mischief is no life at all.” BETTY BOGGS “We loved her not for comely grace but for her pleasing eye and face.” EDNA BOGGS “I’ve taken my fun where I’ve found it.” ELAINE BOOHER “Ever loyal, ever true to the task she has to do.” LINDSEY BRICKEY “A song on his lips, a twinkle in his eye, The leader of the band, he really steps high.” JEAN BROWNING “Of soul sincere, in action faithful, and in honor dear.” SENIORS PATRICIA COLLIER “Laugh yourself to stitches.” PAULINE COLLINSWORTH “I’s mischievous—I is—I’s mighty mischievous—anyhow -—I can’t help it.” BETTY SUE COMER “In her very quietness there is charm.” LUKE CORNETTE, JR. “A man he seems of cheerful yesterdays and confident to¬ morrows.” 12 CAROLYN BRUNER “Dashed with a little sweet at best.” DAVID CALLAHAN “All handsome men are dying and I don’t feel well myself.” JOHN CALLAHAN “The most wasted day of all is that day on which we have not laughed.” LARRY COLLIER “If it be a gentleman and scholar you seek, you have found him.” SENIORS WANDA DICKENSON “Always happy, never blue, when you’re with her you’re happy too.” HENRY EAVES “Not a man of inches, but every inch a man.” LARRY ESTEPPE “Everything comes to those who wait; therefore, why should I hurry?” KAY FLANARY “She moves a goddess, and she looks a queen.” 13 PHYLLIS FULTZ “Thou art the star for which all evening waits.” JIMMY GALLOWAY “He is a scholar and a ripe and good one.” VICTORIA GATES “More generous you couldn’t find, and just as sweet as she is kind.” JACKIE GRAHAM “He should, he could, he would, he did the best.” SENIORS JOHNNIE HOLCOMB “I agree with no man’s opin¬ ions. As “middle classmen,” we have two years behind us, and two more to go. Each of us has watched new teachers come and go. Some of our classmates moved on to other goals and new classmates took their places. However, the excitement and the challenge of new subjects each year keep us from reminiscing too much and re¬ mind us to look forward. Our goal is to set a good example for lower classmen to follow, proving in some way that school days are the best days of youth and that they are the days to learn, to meet new friends, and to accept responsibilities. We owe much to our parents and teachers who have sacrificed their time in order to help us fulfill our goals. This year the Powell Valley Viking Band enjoyed another successful year. During the months of August, September, October, and November, the members of the marching band spent long hours drilling on the half-time shows worked out by Mr. McChesney. The band made appearances at practically all the football games this year. One of the highlights of this year was the annual Band Festival at Bristol, Va. The band presented a show of precision drills which yielded a Division 1 trophy. Several members represented the band in All-District Band during November and in All State Band West in February. The band climaxed the year with the presentation of a concert in May, playing classical selections, marches, and popular numbers. We each realize this could not have been possible without those two wonderful people, Mr. and Mrs. “Mac.” BRISTOL BAND FESTIVAL J. H. The high-stepping Pixies were Mr. “Mac’s” dream. He and the girls spent hours working on the pre¬ cision drills. They have fared well. Football games, Bristol Band Festival, and the Santa Claus parade were made more colorful because of the jaunty berets and flashing batons of the Pixies. We hope another season will find the Pixies far ahead too. . . . Mrs. “Mac” checking as the Band and Pixies come down Cumberland Street . . . Mr. and Mrs. “Mac” At the time the annual was being readied for the press, we were saddened by the death of Mr. “Mac.” For twenty-eight years he had been associated with the Band. In 1961 he conceived of an all girl drill team to complement the marching band which re¬ sulted in a sparkling show unit called the Pixies. On behalf of the student body. Band, and Pixies, we extend heartfelt apprecia¬ tion to Mr. and Mrs. “Mac.” Mr. “Mac” was loved and respected. As long as there is a band at Powell Valley High School there will be a living memory of tivo who loved music. Believing that central to the progress of any school is the school’s library with abundant instructional materials, the Powell Valley High School under the direc¬ tion of Miss Scott, librarian, has endeavored to meet the needs of the students and faculty. The goal of the 1962-63 Powell Valley Library Club composed of twenty-one members was to have an efficiently organized and well-operated li¬ brary in order to stimulate the use of library materials by both students and faculty. In addition to performing regular duties, the Library Club, functioning for pleasure and for purpose, participated in celebrating National Book Week and National Library Week. Other activities included the maintenance of attractive displays throughout the year, entertaining the faculty with a party and a special display of new books, sponsoring an assembly program, for the student body and the P.T.A., and distributing book marks. We also visited other libraries. Our very capable sponsor and librarian is Miss Billie Jean Scott. Under her direction we of the Library Club feel that our school has an efficiently operated library. The club, sponsored by Miss Lora Dingus and Mrs. Grace Rose, is made up of students taking first and second year Latin. Those having completed two years of Latin are considered honorary members. Many things were planned by the Roman Club for this year. The initiation was given by the second-year class- men to the first-year classmen. This consisted of a “dress-up” day and a party given by Latin II mem¬ bers to welcome the new members. A spring banquet for all members was included in the plans. At the banquet Roman customs and tra¬ ditions were observed. Each year the Roman Club is privileged to col¬ lect money for the Crippled Childrens’ Foundation. We thoroughly enjoyed being able to help the Easter Seal Association in this manner. By studying Latin we can get a better understand¬ ing of how the government, customs, and language of our country were derived. Also we can better adjust ourselves to study for the coming years. Having completed Latin I, Latin II members may become members of the Junior Classical League, sponsored by the American Classical League; there¬ fore, through this membership we receive covenants to hand on the torch of classical civilization in the modern world. Each spring the athletic program is closed with the baseball and track activities. Although this phase of the program seems to lack the color and excitement that ac¬ companies the other two programs of football and basketball, we feel that it is a vital part of the physical fitness program for boys. Both baseball and track provide the op¬ portunity for participants to learn valuable athletic skills and at the same time enjoy competitive sports. No one yearbook can capture completely by either word or picture all of the many sides of a high school. We of the Staff hope that we have provided a few mementos to preserve pleasant memories of the icy, snowy 1962-1963 session.
