T. football and track star, the Powell High Panthers had a successful football season. The squad which began practice late and under many difficulties got off to a slow start. They lost their opener to Jefferson City with several positions on the Powell team showing lack of experience. Their second game, Lake City, was also dropped I3-6, but improvement was very evident. Bill Easterday scored the T. D. for Powell on an offtackle jaunt. Savage line play dominated the third game which was at Farragut. lt ended in a thrilling 6-6 dead lock with Easterday again scoring the T. D. Powell broke in the win column with a I2-O upset victory over the T. S. D. "Vikings", Captain O. D. lflatmaker and substitute tailback Robert Baker scored for Powell. The Panthers made it two in a row with a I2-7 rough and tumble over Gibbs. Bill Easterday scooted twenty yards around end for the first score while Leo Cooper .L 4-mf- intercepted a pass and went 36 yards for his T. D. Meseroll used psychology in preparing his team for the October 20th game with Bearden, and the boys respond- ed to the tune of a terrific I9-O upset victory over the highly favored Bearden "Bulldogs". Our bright and shining stars were once again Captain Hatmaker and Bill Easterday. Kyle Marshall chipped in with a beautiful 70 yard Dunt return. Dan Cooper, a sure-fire defensive end became a touchdown maker as he captured a beautiful pass from Bill Easterday for the final score. Chas. Nix, Homer Smith, J, C. Bradley, and Don Harrod all played great defensive games for the "musclemen" in the Powell line. Our pride and joy took two steps backward as the Powell team lost games to Carter and LaFollette but we were still well pleased with the season because both these opponents were exceptionally strong. wi' 'Q' wwf CAPTAIN, O. The boys had a veteran team with at desire to win. This determination was shown by their record of 17 wins and 5 loses and by carrying them to the semi-finals of our district tournament.
