The building was originally erected from funds alotted for grammar schools. However, since a survey showed need for high school classes in the community, the elementary school board agreed to permit the teaching of high school classes in the second story. Thus the first high school was established at Powell in borrowed rooms lElementary and high school funds were separatel. The new school building was dedicated September 26, l9l6 under Supt. Monroe Wilson. In the same year Lincoln Park, Fair Garden, South Knoxville, Halls and Fountain City were built with a total cost of Sl00,000 lSix two-story buildings for less than half the expendi- ture of our newly erected high schoolbuildingl. The faculty of the new school was composed of six teachers, Mr. W. A. Bell was the first principal. Mr. G. W. Morton and Glenmore Garret were the high school teachers. Other teachers were Mrs. Edith Bradley, Miss Beulah Bell and Miss Cleta Cox. The school consisted of eleven grades with a total of about ISO pupils. By 1923 the high school had grown to 65 pupils. The en- rollment at the present time is about five times as great. The total enrollment of the entire school is about 900 with 3 faculty of twenty-eight teachers. During the first Year of its existance the school ex- penses were as follows: Teachers S2500.007 Janitor S47.60p Supplies S325 Fuel Sol. During the present year approximate expenditures are as follows: Teachers S78,000g Janitor service 54050: Supplies S7505 Fuel 5600. During the years 3 new auditorium has been added, :cafeteria has been established, a gymnasium has been built and many other improvements made. Next year, l950, the two schools, elementary and high school, wlll be separated for the first time. Qi! n.!
