1978 - 1979 BADGER The 1978-79 Badger is dedicated to Coach Dale Peters, who led the PVHS Boys Basketball team to the Oregon State Class B Championship. This was the climax of three years of coaching at Powder Valley. During this time Coach Peters became, to many of his athletes, not only a respected coach, but a friend. His demands were always high, on the court and in the classroom, but the results showed evidence of his dedication and the dedication he inspired in others. The 1979 PVHS student body wishes Coach Peters and his family the best of luck, they will be missed. 2 Richard McIntyre Superintendent PVHS ADMINIS- TRATION Mervin Outright Music Sponsored by: WEE Ski Shop-LaGrande Anthony Lakes Corporation-North Powder Norm Records Athletic Director (not pictured) Anna Mae Flower Librarian Norma Gibson English Brian Dexter Social Science Dale Peters Business P.E. It carried 17 prime freshmen to be sold by auction to their predecessors. One little sweetheart, Sue, sold for an unbelievable $15.50 and the sophomore class had taken in $94.75 when the bidding was complete. It is true our slave day carries little resemblance to a real slave sale (excited buyers often outbid themselves and slaves have as much fun as their masters) but nevertheless, each slave and each master went away feeling that the freshman class of 1978 had been properly initiated into the PVHS Student Body. On our way to Newport we spent the night in Portland, shopping at Lloyd's Center and eating Pizza at the Organ Grinder. The rest of the time we were in Newport on the beach. We went on a deep sea fishing trip on a chartered boat and caught 42 fish. It was lots of fun, but we ended up with a few sick people! The rest of the time was spent collecting sea shells, building sand castles and sand candles and jumping waves. It was a very special trip! Sandra, not much of a sailor! Each has lettered in this sport. Angela Weasel Lewis finishes serving another ace. Student Coach Ris£ Moulton made her first season with the Badgers a winning season. Our volleyball team this year consisted of twenty- three devoted and industrious players. The A string bumped, set, spiked, and served their way to becoming Co-champions of the Baker B League with a record of five wins and one loss. Their nonleague record for the season was seven wins and five losses. The B and C strings had their share of well- deserved victories, also. The coach this year was Rise Moulton, with this being her first year as a coach. She did a superb job and was supported in her work by all. 1978 Volleyball Team: We are proud of you! The JV Girl's basketball team did much better than it has in previous years. Although the season started out slowly, it picked up fast, when the girl's defeated Jordan Valley 48-12 on Jordan Valley's home court. We were all really proud of them that day, and especially of Kim Simonis, whose hot shooting streak was responsible for 16 of those 48 points. The girls improved throughout the season perhaps more than any other PVHS team. We will be seeing many of these girls on the Varsity team this year. JV BOY'S BASKETBALL The JV Boy's PVHS basketball team, coached by Richard Burke was young and inexperienced, but they love the game of Basketball, and were not discouraged. One of the highlights for the whole team was when David Colton was moved up to the Varsity team towards the end of the season. Although the record seems to be a little lop-sided, these guys did a great job and North Powder is proud of them. After running literally hundreds of miles in training Lisa went on to take 2nd place in District, earning her a spot in the State finals.
