Powder Valley High School North Powder, Oregon Alma Mater Our strong band can ne’er be broken, Formed in Powder High Far surpassing wealth unspoken. Sealed by friendship’s tie. iChorus) Alma Mater, Alma Mater, Deep graven on each heart. Shall be found unwav'ring true. When we from life shall part. High school life at best is passing, Gliding swiftly by; Then let us pledge in word and deed, Our love for Powder High. (Repeat Chorus) 960 Badger Staff Editor ......... SHERRY HUTCHINSON Assistant Editor........ BILL TRINDLE Art Editor ............. LINDA CARR Photography Editor.... ULA MAE TEFFT Business Manager ..... KAY GRIFFITH Advisor ..... MR. HOWARD MANNERS Dedication With a feeling of deep gratitude, the Yearbook Staff wishes to dedicate the 1960 BADGER to our Alma Mater, Powder Valley High School. From the outside, one can see the willow trees, the American flag and our beloved Beaver State flag, the tan brick walls, the high concrete steps, and the white fire escapes. The inside reveals the old clock in plain view from the front door, the darkly-seasoned hall floors, the worn steps, and the drinking fountains. The rooms are inviting as one looks in. The desks are marked and the pencil sharpeners are well used. But what does one feel as he sees these things? Every inch of this building holds a meaning for someone—every name scratched on the desks, every room holds the atmosphere of the years that one spent there—every mar and crack holds a laugh of the years gone by, or a tear of childhood fears and hurts. This building was built in 1916, which makes it forty-four years old. But to us, who have spent most of our lives in schooling, whose biggest memories have come from here, the building is ageless. As time progresses, a new building will be built near where this one stands, but always, we can think back to the old Powder Valley High School, our Alma Mater. In Memory of ROSS JAY CHAMBERLAIN Ross was a Powder Valley High School student for only a short time, but his fun-loving ways, his un- swerving loyalty, and his friendli- ness will always be remembered by us. The Badg er The purpose of the 1960 Bad- ger is to give the Powder Valley High School student memories to carry with him throughout his life. This year the Yearbook Staff purchased a camera and took many of the pictures. The Badger was printed by The Record-Courier in Ba- ker, Oregon. Those are trying times for all schools, especially small high schoo's, with reorgan- ization reaching further out into the rural areas. For all of this uncertainty, the pat- rons, instructors, ond students have been most co-operative. Speaking for the Board, I wish to thank one and all for this successful year. ROGER LOENNIG, Chairman. Page One Principal Dear Students, When, in the years to come, you leaf through the pages of this “Bad- ger , may its pictures and stories bring back many cherished memories of a happy and fruitful year spent with your classmates and friends at Powder Valley. Our timidity soon wore off, after the Sophomore class initiated us. Do you remember a dozen babies running through the halls, clutching baby bottles in one hand and teddy bears in the other? David Obert, class president, was assisted by Barry Gekeler, Junior Vanderpool, and Sherry Hutchinson. Mrs. Virginia P y a t t was our advisor and Janet Chandler was Carnival princess. At last, a chance to get even! The year was 1 957 and we were Sophomores. The poor freshmen suffered through initiation and then we gave them a party. Our class grew smaller as David Obert left during the previous summer to attend school at Elgin. We gained two new girls, Aloma Hensley, who attended for three weeks, and Diana Rich, who was our classmate for the first semester. Also, there was a new boy. Gene Puckett. Class officers were Donald Nice, president; Janet Chandler, Sherry Hutchinson, and Diana Rich. We were supervised by Mrs. Claribel Hammond and our Carnival princess was Kathleen Nave. As Juniors, we were known as “the smallest class with the larg- est job. Gene Puckett and Lee Shaffer transferred to other schools, leav- us with only eight members to put on the Junior-Senior Prom. Junior Van- derpool dropped out after half a year but Charles Hoffman took h i s place. Cake raffles, scrap iron drives, ball game concessions, and Christ- mas card sales were o n I y a few of our money-making projects. The theme for our Prom was Southern Gardens. The dancers were carried back into the days of the Old South. Class President Barry Gekeler was assisted by Janet Chandler, Helen Stultz, and Sherry Hutchinson. Class advisor was Mr. Marvin Vancil and Carnival princess was Sherry Hutchinson. Ah, Seniors! Our big time had arrived at last. And again, our class was the smallest in high school. Janet Chandler transferred to Hood River, Oregon, and Betty Wagner joined us from Denver, Colorado. Bob Wiening finished his high school education during the first semester and Charles Hoffman left us at the same time. This year our class ad- visor was Mr. Jack McGoldrick. Class officers were. Sherry Hutchinson, president; Helen Stultz, and Betty Wagner. The theme for our traditional Senior Ball was An Old-Fashioned Christmas. Helen Stultz scored high this year as both Carnival princess and Pep Night queen. We have spent four wonderful years at Powder Valley High School. The many memories will always be held dear to us. CLASS FLOWER—Red Rose. Class Colors—Red and White. CLASS MOTTO— Always to be best, and distinguished above the rest.” Pag Eleven Juniors The Junior class started a busy yeo with better-than-ever plans for making money. Concession stands, cake raffles, the selling of flower bulbs, work days, and class-sponsored dances were only a few proj- ects of the hard-working Junior class. Jeannie Huddleston, from Long Creek, Oregon, began her Junior year at Powder Valley High ond then transferred to Port- I a n d, Oregon during Christmas vacation. Bruce Christman transferred here from Baker, Oregon, for second semester. The Junior class advisors were Mrs. Gene Hammond and Mr. Marvin Vancil; car- nival princess was Ula Mae Tefft. Betty Rodgers, from New Mexico, joined thcSophomore class shortly before Christmas. The main event of their year was Fresh- man hazing, when they showed the upper- classmen that they were real PVHS'ers. The Sophomore boys were pallbearers for their classmate, Ross Chamberlain. The class advisor was Mrs. Osterloh; carnival princess was Jan Peters, who also was made queen. After initiation there was a party so everyone could become friends again. The class started with twenty-three members and was later joined by Ramona Lambert. Glen McFarlin moved away in No- vember and Terry Ewing joined the class during the latter part of February. Class advisor was Mrs. Byrd; cornival princess was Mary Bond. They were accompanied by Mrs. Myrna Vancil, Student Council Advisor. The Sophomores then inflicted the traditional Freshman initiation up- on them. First they were paraded in front of the stu- dent body and auctioned off to the upperclassmen. The next day found Freshmen dressed in everything from Siamese twin outfits to bathing suits. Noise and laughter could be heard all day as the Freshmen were forced to bow to all upperclassmen. A party was given that night to cheer up the Freshmen and to show them that high school life is really a wonderful experience.
