The purpose of health education was to prepare the student to understand and apply health practices to his daily life, The major aim of drivers education was to prepare the student to drive both safely and efficiently. The student was taught California driving laws as well as the laws of nature which relate to driving. HEALTH UBRARY The library is a popular place on campus as hundreds of students gather there each day to study or find books and other materials. To help students find what they need are Mrs. Howard, head librarian, Mrs. Dalbey, Mrs. Chinala, Mrs. Wills, Mrs, Lion, and Mrs. Falkner. ln addition to the main library, students can work in any one of the four resource centers or in the media center where they can use audiovisual materials individually or in small groups. To help students get the right tapes, and reading materials are Mrs. Murry lMedia Centerl, Mrs. Gripkey lMath Resource Centerl, Mrs. Hager lSocial Science Resource Centerl and Mrs. Slight lEnglish Resource Centerl. Mrs. Betty Snyder, head of the Health office, is a registered nurse and has been with P.H.S. for almost six years. Last year was Mrs. Rosalys Messner first but she showed herself to be thoroughly competent. Primarily Mrs. Messner takes care of students who come for help with medical problems and injuries. When more serious problems come up both nurses work together. Mrs. Messner handles the free lunch program, which is extremely time consuming, and the record keeping. Mrs. Snyder is at Abraxas High School two mornings a week and handles the students who need to be referred to a doctor, dentist or public health official. She takes care of home visits for ill students and those in special education, keeps track of medical excuses for P.E., conducts a class for weight reduction, is a member of the guidance council and sponsors the health careers club.
