As salutatorian for the Class of 1951 I welcome you to our graduation exercises We have gone far in our four years of high school During our lives we have seen the world around us go through some terrifically exciting times Apparently there are more such times ahead Ir rs easy to look upon recent world events and have the feeling that everything was for the best We want to believe that something good has come to humanity out of every great upheaval It is not so easy to see th way ahead Ir is true that we who are graduating from high school this year do not have to make important decisions on the great prob lems of the day We are interested just as much, though, as rf we did have to make the Hnal decisions Modern civilizatlon seems today to be at the crossroads NVQ: try to believe that there rs a net gain to civilization even as the final outcome of the great wars As we leave high s hool we hope that the time spent here has made us better fitted for the perplexing problems of life and that because of what we have learned and experienced in high school we can give better service to our country and to humanity XVe have come to high school graduation in a crrtical perrod in the history of modern civillzation Human thought and actrvity in recent years have advanced raprdly Science has advanced so rapidly that no one knows quite what to expect next Dur ing our years in high school there has been a rising Crescendo of rnterest, excitement and tenseness which has several times in thxs four years seemed to be at a breaking pomt In such a time it IS impressive that we who graduate today have inherited a great er demand from crvxlization than has ever been wished upon a previous generation 14 Civilization demands that we of America keep emotionally cool while those who would destroy us are using every possible way to frustrate our thoughts and efforts Wfe must seek out the sxmple truth and state it clearly and restate it frequently while others are broadcasting the direct opposite This means every Amerlcan individual must be capable of listen mg to the true and the untrue and to hgure out for hrmself which is which For this quality in our people our nation has depended largely upon the schools Our schools have had to lay the foundation for thc spread of basic information and for teach mg the people how to think clearly Our schools have in this way kept us free and our freedom has made us strong Our schools must now make us even stronger Never before in our hxstory has our way of life been so challenged by so vast an array of forces Never before has our way been challeneged by a we in America stand No man can now see the end of this period of tremendous pressure against us We know only that me must be unfaltermg in our ef forts and steadfast in our faith in that which is nght and true As we welcome you to our graduation exercises, it is wtth the feeling that we are standing at the crossroads in life Ir IS equally clear that our mod ern civilization is also at crossroads In both in stances the future rs uncertain We know what we would like to do in life We know what we hope for in the outcome of world affairs With our expres sion of welcome to you there has to be an expres sion of hope for the future of our class and our country We are grateful for the good training we have had in high school Truly, there is yet so much for us to do I - 2 force so entirely opposite to everything for which
