As th1s graduat1on ceremony comes to a close lt IS for me to say farewell on behalf of the Class of 71 We shall no longer be subject to the rules and d1sc1pl1ne of the school yet we shall forever cherlsh the memory of the many pleasant assoclatlons of our years IH h1gh school We are graduat1ng lll a day of fast mov1ng world events bc1ent1f1c progress IS rap1d and at t1mes breath takmg In h1gh school classrooms we have learned how many 1mportant events of today con nect w1th other events of long ago In our scxence classrooms and laborator1es we have learned baSlC facts whlch served as steppmg stones 1n some per advances or d1scover1es wh1ch CXCIEC the 1mag1nat1on and startle the world Our teachers have helped us establ1sh cr1ter1a for cr1t1c1sm of all our read1ng so that we may Judge the val1d1ty of statements presented as facts Is It son's m1nd leadmg on to really true or IS If just what someone would l1ke to have us th1nk IS true A large part of our l1ves w1ll be spent 1n readlng We must be ever alert to qu1ckly recogn1ze propaganda as someth1ng d1fferent to a clear and s1mple statement of fact or pr1nc1ple We must at all txmes be cr1t1cal 1n our own mmds as we read newspapers, magaz1nes or anythmg 1ntended to xnfluence our OPIHIODS Some of the weapons whlch we must use agamst those who wxsh to destroy us are not of a m1l1tary nature We must work 1n pr1vate and publ1c lxfe w1th as much unselfxshness as 15 humanly poss1ble, bemg ever ready to stand corrected 1f we should be wrong We must make our llves represent the very maxtmum 1n usefulness 1n the ways des1gnated by our leaders as most 1mportant We must seek out the truth 1n 1nternat1onal and pr1vate lnfe relatxons and state IC and restate lf as often as there 15 a chal lenge to the truth We must study what constitutes human courage and endeavor to develop a very lenge to the truth We must study what COIISIIIUICS human understandmg where m1sunderstand1ng has resulted from w1thhold1ng of fact and truth by mlsstatements, by half truths or by d1rect and Ha grant falsehocds We must not allow ourselves to be overcome by despa1r lf the Job before us seems too great Ir IS a t1me for determ1nat1on and perse verance Our generatlon has 1nher1ted a greater de mand, we beheve, than has any ever before Throughout hlstory, m wars for truth, just1ce and freedom, there were per1ods when the outlook was dark, lf not hopeless Men dnd not grve up 1n those t1mes At IIDCS a mere handful gathered together sometlmes 1n h1dden refuges, kept the falth and came out to fight aga1n, eventually to w1n Truth and freedom, closely coupled w1th the nghts of the 1nd1v1dual, are consummg flames that can never go out It should g1ve us courage and hope 1n the ordeal we now face to recall that we are not the hrst to face It The pages of hxstory tell of many tlmes when determlned men endured hardshlps and came back to hght agam for the same determmed stand The struggle to uphold truth and freedom has been one 1n whlch t1me and aga1n the battle rose and fell and rose aga1n We are here on th1s occas1on to go through the closmg BXEYCISCS of our graduat1on from h1gh school We say farewell w1th a m1xture of human emotxons There 15 joy because th's IS our day of graduatxon There whom th1s 15 a partmg of the ways There 15 a d1f ferent k1nd of pleasure because graduat1on represents a note worthy ach1evement There 15 a deep feelmg of gratntude that all th1s has been made poss1ble for us by you, our parents, fnends and teachers ms sorrow because of the many fr1ends w1th
