Uncompromising in his high standards of integrity and ethics and un- paralleled in self-control, loyalty, honor, and concern for the welfare of young people, he has unselfishly devoted his past twenty-two years of inspiring service as the principal of our high school and has earned the highest esteem of faculty and students alike. A real gentleman in the truest sense, he is a genuine educator and a friend to all. MR. MILES S. It was instituted in 1926 to promote better better student-faculty relations and to improve the general welfare oi' the student body. The membership of the Council consists ol' one representative from each homeroom, elected in the beginning of the school term. The officers are chosen by the entire student body in the spring. The activities of this year's Council were the selling of book' covers, presentation of Lyceum programs, maintaining a Lost- and-Found Department in the cafeteria, ushering at Parent- Teaeher Conferences, and the selling of soft drinks at all home basketball games. The Council also held the traditional Penny- A-Week Drive to buy Christmas toys tor the less fortunate chil- dren ot' the community. The Council is under the direction of Mr. Donald Schneider. Most noteworthy among the various tilts were those against Palmerton and Catasauqua for District XI honors. Jim Berrang, the Tides leading scorer, became the second Pottsville High player to score over 1,000 career points. He was also first in defensive rebounds. Four of the five starters of this year's team were among the top thirty in the East Penn League. The important job of manager, which is too often forgotten in the minds of the spectators, was under- taken by Larry Schiff for four years. Our J.V. team, coached by Mr. Keating, had a final record of 11-11. With their good attitude and hard work, the Junior Varsity won nine out of their last thirteen games of the season. With this promising young team coming up, Mr. Kline can surely look forward to many rewarding seasons in the years to come. VARSITY BASKETBALL SCORES H. S. P.A.H. S. P A H. S. Adams CHEERLEADERS The Pottsville Area High School cheerleaders began their 1969-1970 season by attending the Poconos Sports Camp in August. At camp, the Varsity squad won four awards for outstanding performance and also the Spirit Stick, an award given to the peppiest squad. The many cheers, stunts, and routines these girls learned at camp were put to good use at pep rallies, at games, and at parades. In addition to cheering at football and basketball games, the Varsity added wrestling meets to their busy schedule. When not performing, the cheerleaders could be found selling stickers, pencils, pillows, and having bake sales and Victory dances. The Junior Varsity cheerleaders were kept busy making signs, decorating for pep rallies, and selling items at the games. Under the excellent guidance of Miss Ellen Hildreth, the girls have learned that a cheerleader is more than a leader of cheers. She is a leader in her school. Certainly the P. A. H.nS. cheerleaders are worthy of this recognition. Yes, it is true, the cheerleaders have brought back spirit at Pottsville Area High School! The returning seniors weren't great in number, but their quality formed a firm base for this year's team. POTTSVILLE 0 - BLUE MOUNTAIN 18 In spite of the weeks of hard preparation, Pottsville was held scoreless for the first time since 1957 in their opening bout with Blue Mountain. Pottsville's rock-ribbed defense was trying its best, but the Eagles' offense proved to be invulnerable. Punts by Lopez made the farmers really plow for their touch- downs. POTTSVILLE 18 - MAHANOY AREA 6 A strong running offense added to Pottsville's usual sturdy defense to enable the Bulldogs to score three times against the Golden Bears. Shellhamer, the pride of '71, did his part by scoring the first TD of the 1969 season on a keeper from six yards out. POTTSVILLE 13 - TAMAQUA 6 Pottsville scored its second straight victory with a triumph over Tamaqua by a score of 13-6. Potts- ville had a 7-0 lead at halftime with Wilson's sideline scamper. Wilson also scored the final touch- down in the fourth quarter with a score over right tackle. POTTSVILLE 29 -- PANTHER VALLEY 0 With the help of Wilsons 72-yard punt return, Pottsville truly romped over the Panthers. Outstand- ing blocking was displayed by John Rich and Pete Marchetti, as they helped to clear the way for Wil- son's two long touchdown runs. Laubenstine added to the total score by adding two TD's, both gotten from the left end. POTTSVILLE 21 - SHAMOKIN 0 Pottsville scored an astounding victory over Shamokin by a score of 21-0. Dave Syndor scored Potts- ville's first touchdown and Dave Wilson added the two-point conversion. Wilson then scored Pottsville's second touchdown with a pass from Shellhamer. Syndor then pulled in Shellhamer's fourth down end zone pass, and Vanco Georgievski kicked the extra point with 24 seconds left, thus extending Pottsville's winning streak to four straight games. POTTSVILLE 29 - SHENANDOAH 14 The Tide made it five straight with their win over Shenandoah by a score of 29-14. The Blue Devils boasted a strong defense, but our offense proved to be just too strong. POTTSVILLE 15 - MOUNT CARMEL 42 Although Mount Carmel was limited to only six offensive plays in the first period, Mount Carmel, with the lightning speed of Gary Diminick, still defeated Pottsville by a score of 42-15. Dave Syndor put Pottsville on the scoreboard at 2:58 in the second quarter. Shellhamer capped Pottsville's 75-yard drive with a two-yard run for the Tide's second score. He added the two extra points himself. The Tornadoes truly outwinded the Tide. POTTSVILLE 8 -- SHIKELLAMY 17 In its first meeting with Pottsville, Shikellamy upended the Tide with a 17-8 victory. Rick Lauben- stine scored the first touchdown on a 17-yard end sweep, Shellhamer added the two extra points on a run. Pottsville's biggest downfall was the failure of the pass to find the range. POTTSVILLE 7 - I-IAZLETON 26 Despite Pottsville's valiant efforts, the Crimson Tide was still defeated by the Mountaineers by a score of 26-7. Sophomore Chris Higgins scored Pottsville's touchdown on a 27-yard pass from Ronnie Lom- bel. Vanco Georgievski kicked the extra point to end Pottsville's scoring. POTTSVILLE 14 - WILLIAM ALLEN 14 Pottsville almost pulled a major upset but tied with William Allen, 14-14. Rick Laubenstine scored Pottsville's first touchdown on a three-yard run. Wilson then scored on a sideline scamper for Potts- ville's second touchdown. Vanco Georgievski split the uprights after both scores, accounting for Potts- ville's fourteen points. POTTSVILLE 6 -- READING 28 In Pottsville's last game of the season, Dave Syndor scored the only touchdown in the second period by catching an eleven-yard pass. The Tide ended its season with a 5-5 record. The highlight of the season was a five-game winning streak beginning with the Mahanoy Area game and ending with the Shenandoah Valley game. 1 V W P: . 5 3 .3 , s sg . 1 V.,, 4 I6 g I' is Y fy iii J 'if - ,.,. ! Kirk Morgan, play- ing in the number one position, qualified for the District XI Finals with an 85 average. Kirk's 74 was just one stroke oil the school record. The underclassmen made their presence felt on the squad by such outstanding mem- bers as Emerson Carter, a freshman. Because of a very tough schedule, the squad was held to a 4-10 record. Pottsville beat Mahanoy Area by a score of 35-21, Schuylkill Haven by 16 points in a 33-17 victory, Panther Valley by a 26-23 squeaker, and Nativity by a score of 29-21. The three losses that marred a perfect record were at the hands of undefeated teams. Great individual performances by Jim-Messina and Gary Comfort were features of the season. Both won a number of races and both won medals in the District Eleven Cross Country Championship. These two runners won one-third of the medals in the District Eleven Meet. Jim Messina won the first running of the Schuylkill County Cross Country League Championship in record time. Messina also represented District Eleven in the P. I. A. The band both entertained and provided spirit at football games. Their prediction that Our Boys Will Shine may have come true as a result of their spirited music. The annual Spring Concert and various assembly programs were highly acclaimed. The band has been handling quite challenging concert music. Our band was among the very best at the Hamburg King Frost Paradeg the Pottsville Hallowe'en, Christmas, and Memorial Day Paradesg the Greater Pottsville Winter Carnival Parade, and the Schuyllzill Haven Jaycees County Band Festival. It concluded the year by playing for the annual Commencement Exercises. His real life is led in his head and is known but to none but himself. MARK TWAIN The Class of 1970 has entered a new decade. We have witnessed social and political un- rest, economic crises, and civil disorders. Ours is a generation persistent in investigation and questioning, although it may seem that rather than diminish the troubles of mankind, we have intensified them. As a nation our accomplishments are wide- spread. So far away we have landed a man on the moon, yet so close to home, the American involvement in Vietnam continues in its tenth year. As the Senior Class of Pottsville Area High School, we, too, have witnessed many changes in the past years. When we entered as Freshmen, our expectations were beyond realiza- tion. We were horrified and confused that first day by the general maze of corridors and classrooms and by the long lines and short lunch period in the cafeteria. We thought we were doomed from the start. Soon, however, we believed that we were destined to become cultured and learned by our introduction to the Latin language and our finding that Latin is neither dead nor difficult. To prove this point, the Freshman Class presented a play in which Larry Schiff portrayed the Roman Superman and saved the Latin language land the play cast, tool from the boos of the audience. Freshman English proved to be a great challenge. We discovered that we could bring an F32 up to an F16 if we really tried! Those ever-fascinating facts and theories of Earth and Space Science were explained to us very thoroughly, even though a question might be an- swered by a wait until you get to Physics for that. But the new math in Algebra I proved to be too complicated for our Freshman ability. Our Sophomore year proved to be one of the most interesting especially with our school evaluation. Besides everyone's being on his toes, the school and all its inhabitants both sparkled and shone. We passed inspection with flying colors. Our vocabulary was greatly increased by Miss Ryan's introduction to Thirty Days to a More Powerful Vocabulary. The course was a tedious one, the benefits were tremendous. We could now use six-syllable words in place of two-syllable words. Also, we worked our way through the causes of World War I and World War II with the help of our fine his- tory teachers. We elected as officers this year: Les Payne, president, Charles Achenbach, vice-presi- dentg Allan Tepper, secretary, and Tom Murphy, treasurer, and ended the year on a very happy, joyful note. As we became upperclassmen we finally realized that it was, indeed, possible to blow up the Chem Lab and often we plunged for the windows to avoid suffocation. The Driver Ed. classes offered diversity for the J uniors-they now had the opportunity of backing into and running over garbage trucks. The atmosphere of several classes was changed upon the arrival of our first student teach- ers from Bloomsburg State College. Another innovation was added when the students picked a new-design for their class ring. The new rings can now be had with a variety of stones. And on the international scene the first American Field Service Day was held at Pottsville, including entertainment by about twenty foreign exchange students in an afternoon assembly. Now three-quarters of the way through our high school careers, the Junior Class officers, Les Payne, Elaine Linden, Kurt Brown, and John Rich planned the Junior Jelk, which closed the year of the greatest class in P. A. H. S. history. It took us four years to reach the lofty plateau, but we've finally become the Senior Class of Pottsville High. School spirit finally came back to our pep rallies, and the seniors were awarded the spirit stick on innumerable occasions. Our year was also enlightened by that Academy Award-winning play, f'You Can't Take It With You,', presented by thc best ac- tors Pottsville will ever see. We've attained the climax of success in entertainment, but our scholastic achievement was not lacking, either. We all learned Newton's Three Laws of Mo- tion and tried to prove them through experimentation, with error ranging from .0001 per cent to 2.000 per cent. Trig class was easier this year because of the new addition, a calcu- lator which could relieve the headaches of adding two and two. We end the year looking forward to commencement with mixed emotions. We are eager to start new lives in either the business or academic world, but we are sad knowing that the carefree days of high school will never return and that many friends and acquaint- ances will never be close again. We hope sincerely that as a class we have helped to improve the general image of high school students and we thank our teachers and administrators for the help and care they have given us in seeing, defining, and solving our problems. In this era of change and struggle for individuality, is it any wonder that the Class of 1970 should choose a play whose characters are unique, to say the least? YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU is the type of play that the cast, under the patient guidance of Miss Sherill Silberling and Miss Geraldine Morgan, struggled to make a success through unending rehearsals. Ever imprinted on our minds are all the good times we had both in and out of rehearsals, the excitement, tension, fear, and last-mznute cramming on opening night, the unceasing nosebleed Sonny had between scenes, and the echoing words of our directors, K'When are you kids going to learn your lines?,' Breaking the tradition established by classes of previous years, we had a one-night performance of YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU. Those fortunate enough to attend our play on November 20, 1969, were filled with praise for our great performance. Already famed, the Class of 1970 will go down in history as having produced one of the most spectacularly performed plays in P. A. H. S. history. THE CAST Penelope ..,..
