He was a 1954 graduate of Pottstown High School, where he lettered ln football basketball, and baseball. He returned to the Pottstown School District in 1964 when he taught at Central Junior High. He began his career at the high school in 1968 as a guidance counselor Through the years this versatile instructor has taught social studies English, psychology, and speech In his classroom we learn the meaning of both a good education and a good laugh as he punctuates his teaching with his dry sense of humor. In our sports pro- grams he was a football coach from 1971 to 1981. He has been a baseball coach for the past 13 years, the last ten years as head coach He has motivated us to play our best and to live up to the name of Trojans. His personality is enjoyed by all who come to know him His patience makes us feel comfortable, his understanding allows us the ease to come to him with our problems his discipline has enabled us to set high goals and achieve them It is with heartfelt sincerity and gratitude that we dedicate the 1983 Trolad to lTlr Williom Kerr Dedication 3 --sf 'T 'r mf. r A A maureen barber heather downie lisa hoffman jerry Iubinsky don neiffer Iori zerbey bonnie baker pamela barndt lllll S-, 'huns ii T- ali'- mike bridgeman cathy davidheiser linda dipietro gina dmiterchik erica flagg lauren fuerman debbie gibson laura Q, fy NT 5 L -as- ' all wwf X . Administration 15 College Prep Students Nome Their Colleges The college preparatory cur- riculum offered a wide variety of courses for those students planning to attend an institute of higher education. The course was not limited to college prep students: many business and vocational students enrolled in selected courses. For the past five years emphasis has been placed on a writing pro- gram designed to improve the writing skills of all students with special emphasis on the needs of college bound students who are re- quired to take SAT tests, write research term papers, and prepare expository essays. The history and English departments combined in team teaching on a number of these projects. Honors courses are offered in eleventh and twelfth grade English, and advanced biology, physics, and chemistry. Calculus and computer programming are also available. In 1983 approximately 350 students were enrolled in the col- lege prep program. Twenty to twenty-tive percent of the entire stu- dent body entered college or some other institution. Of the 85 senior college prep students, a majority received scholarships, merit awards, or bonds, depending upon the academic accomplishments and individual talents. In 1983 ap- proximately 34'Mn of the student body were enrolled in the eight vocational shops. The shops included automotive mechanics, machine trades, electronic technology, drafting, cosmetology, small appliance repair, construction trades and maintenance, and health assistants. These courses trained the students in a cluster of knowledge and skills to prepare them for post-high school job placement. The school year 1982-83 was the first year that all the vocational shops were once again located in the high school building. The Annex was phased out because of the progressive drop in student population. Pottstown High School was one of six comprehensive high schools in Pennsylvania. Comprehensive means Mrs. Falvey and Sandy Zipay g . i L1 Kirk Zimmerman and Scott Heimbach in., fr ' John Burke Donna Carpenter Marlene Falvey that all forms of education ranging from vocational to college preparatory were conducted in the same building. As a result, students had the oppor- tunity to take college preparatory academic subjects while they were enrolled in vocational shops. Many of these students were prepared to enter college or technical schools after graduation. -ki --i..,,,, ? -'Ran 1 ti, ' it 'T'fT tiff.. W f' wil ' y I , i mir X ie X 1 at et! . The sports teams were led by domi- nant juniors who posed threats to many athletes from rival schools and earned their places on the Page of Champions. They proudly sang, Faithful and true-hearted, Let us cheer our dear Old High. . lt was the grandmother of one of the members of the Class of '84 who wrote the words to our Alma Mater! Athletics and school pride were not all the juniors had to offer. Academics and drama were fields also pursued by many undergraduates. The Perils of Lulu, the class play, was a smashing success. Numerous students took the opportunity to show their academic excellence by qualifying to join the Honor Society. The cabinet was busy planning the Prom, the 1984 class trip, and gradua- tion. President Chris Martin accepted the Mantle from the senior class, and the class members took upon their shoulders the respect and responsibili- ty of being seniors. They not only looked back upon the class they added to their name, but also looked forward to their senior year here at their home - P.H.S. - 1- tw, tx x wa. 34 ,.' rg. Wright Juniors 73 Students Of '85 Welcome Rdvisors With Closs The Class of '85 began the year by welcoming two new faces. Mrs. Donna Carpenter and Mrs. Darcie Brauner took on the challenge of being class sponsors for the first time. After several months they commented: We knew there would be a lot of work ahead, but the rewards were there also. lt is impossible to meet everyone on a one-to-one basis simply by meeting them in the halls. But you real- ly get to know the people who come out for cabinet meetings before and alter school and for the fund raisers. You have to learn something about a person who is willing to put onions on hoagies at six o'clock in the morning. Although the class sales made a lot of progress, the attendance at class cabinet meetings could be better. The Class of '85 is an enjoyable group of people to work with. We are looking forward to the next two years. President Brent Zern 74 Sophomores vgd OFFICERS. Jim Karkoska, Marlo Magliocchetti, Cynthia Ronnie, Brent Zern. . -Q . L- CABINET1 FIRST ROW: P. Wright Sophomores 83 84 Freshmen The Closs Of 1986 makes H Notme For Themselves Last September, more than 300 disoriented freshmen walked through the high school doors for the first time. These ninth graders soon found out that their freshman experience would not be entirely pleasant. From being picked on by upperclassmen to being called last to assembIies, the freshmen had a tough year. Freshmen . . . . . . had to use the junior high sports facilities. . . .were neither children nor adults. . . .found out what mid-terms and finals were. . . . sat where they could neither see nor hear assemblies. . . .were blown away in gym class. . . .suffered the consequences if they were band members. It wasn't easy, but the year was not a complete disaster. Some frosh even had moments of stardom. Sue Iezzi won the position of freshman representative to the Homecoming Court. Kathy Kerr earned regal status of class president while Tina Malone, Kim Howze, and Michelle Huggard were vice-president, secretary, and treasurer. Fifty percent of the Trojan band were freshmen. The sports teams did well with the football team ac- cumulating the most successful mark, a 6-1 standing. Jason Jones, a college prep student, started for the high school JV basketball team. Sue Kovach, Kathy Kerr, and Sue Iezzi won spots on the wrestling cheerleading squad. All in all, it was a year of growing, maturing, learning. We joined the ranks of the Trojans and grew up a lit- tle. Looking back, it was worth it, and we looked forward to being sophomores. OFFICERS. FIRST ROW: K. Howze, K. Kerr. SECOND ROW: M. The girls kept the Christmas season jolly with caroling at the Leader and Boyer Homes. They served the school by acting as ushers for class plays and concerts and serv- ed as waitresses at banquets. As the year progressed, the Club sold carnations for Valentine's Day, organized Clean Up Day, and assisted the Special Olympics. Under field conductors Karen Marshall and Kendra Read the mar- ching band received many outstanding awards, including best overall band at the Downingtown cavalcade. Their annual Christmas concert was a very successful performance with a woodwind quintet and brass choir ad- ding to the holiday spirit. Five members of the band received the honor of participating in the District Band Concert. They ended the year with a spring concert. The jazz band was very gratifying, going to competitions at Daniel Boone, Bishop Kendrick, and Muhlenberg. Their adjudication numbers included many fine soloists. To raise money for future trips and to pay for transportation to cavalcades, the entire band par- ticipated in a cheese and sausage sale, a fruit sale, an Easter candy sale, and the ever popular hoagie sale. gfadlo like ,A+-JA PP OFFICERS. Although they had an entirely new coaching staff, including head coach Mr. Dan Weller, and had only 2 starters returning, they played like veterans to chalk up a 6-5-1 season. They started with Holy Name and won 14-0. They then traveled to Phoenixville where they defeated the always tough Phantoms 13-6. The next three weeks the Trojans played teams that were considered the best three in the league. The first week they played Coatesville and, despite a two touchdown effort by Scott Glenn and an 84 yard touchdown kickoff return by his cousin Colin, they lost a well played game to the Raiders, 28-22. .. ffffbhsg 3 Bob Hartman has been the Trojans' student equipment manager for six years. ln that time he has attended practices and games, repaired and maintained equip- ment, and has kept the inventory. 124 Football They lost the next week 28-15 to a solid Henderson team, and lost another heartbreaker 3-0 to Spring- Ford despite an almost perfect defen- sive outing. The next four weeks the Trojans began to get the breaks. Thanks to more than 400 yards and 5 touchdowns by the Glenn cousins, they overran East 35-29. They beat Pottsgrove 22-14 in in the Homecom- ing game, during which Jeff Satter- white set a school record with a 99 yard touchdown run. They defeated Boyertown and Great Valley with a mixture of fine running, good quarter- backing, and a swarming defense. When the Trojans traveled to Bucktown for the annual Thanksgiving game, the Wildcats came out ready for football and took a 20-0 lead at halftime. Colin Glenn socred twice, but in the end the Blue and White came up on the short end of a 20-13 score. The JV team turned in a 3-6 record against a tough schedule. The freshman team, led by Jones, Braun, Brinkley, Johnson, and Glenn, turned in a 6-1 season, while the 8th grade team had an undefeated seson, 6-0.
