Admired, athletic, attractive, and amiable - these are accolades that describe the lady whom we honor today. As a student at Pottstown High School her activities included basketball, lacrosse, AA Board, and class cabinet. She was the captain of the twirling corps and the business man- ager of the 1967 Troiad. After being graduated from West Chester State College, she returned to Pottstown High to teach physical education and health. In addition to her teaching she has coached almost every girls' sport and has served as advisor to the Classes of 1976 and 1978. Cur- rently she is the coach of lacrosse and girls' tennis and is a ccrsponsor of the Girls' Leader Corps. Her accomplishments are many. In an incredible year she coached two teams - lacrosse and girls' basketball - to Ches-Mont championships. She was selected Outstanding Coach of 1978 by the Tri-County Old Timers Association. The quantity of her accomplishments is surpassed only by the quality of her work. As a coach she emphasizes winning but also stresses attitudes, self-esteem, and school pride. As a teacher she has tremendous rap- port not only with her athletes but with all students at P.H.S. As a woman she demon- strates competitiveness combined with femi- nine poise. It is with the warmest admiration and respect that we dedicate the 1979 Troiad to Miss .lenis Bechtel ll ? -14' '11 A ' V , 1 R' 'X m., ,, x 553' - 2 Jys. First, we would like to thank the Class of 1980 for being the little guys in our first year. You gave us many laughs and someone to pick on. Secondly, we would like to thank the fac- ulty with whom we have spent the last three years. We thank you for Mr. Avery's sponsor- ing 79 activities, Mr. Rendina's method, Mr. Kovach's making our yearbook financially possible, Mr. Milantoni's regimented Key Club, Mr. Leveille's faith in us, Mr. Strock's job hunting and Mr. Armato's Pray tell . . . We are grateful for Mrs, Beekley's patience, Mr. Fritz's unbreakable thermos bottles, Mr. Kacanda's guidance, Mr. Tull's endless notes, Mr. Baker's snap, and Mr. Leshinskie's unembellished stories. We appreciate Mrs. Swavely's diction, Mr. Wel- ler's sense of humor, Mrs. Noe1's map tests, Mr. Olivieri's Q.E.D.'s, and Mr. Delewski's Polish jokes. Finally, we would like to thank the admin- istration. We will never forget Mr. Smith's cheerleading squad, Mr. Karin's announce- ments, or Mr. Yaremchuk's pressed jeans. Most important of all, what do we say to each other? Thanks for your picture. Thanks for what you wrote in my yearbook. Thanks for the memories. Thank you for being my friend. Wheatley. Freshmen: The Rookies Once again a freshman class was faced with the task of adjusting to the confusing and challenging ways of the Pottstown Senior High. This year 291 new faces advanced to the senior high. The freshman class, second largest in the school, was fortunate to have talented members in the fields of athletics and scholastics. Our male superfrosh'sN were Ronnie Reinhart, Eric Schirk, Corey Goff, and -Jeff Shaner. These individuals excelled in football, wrestling, and golf to such an extent that they played on high school varsiry teams. We also had a highly intellectual group of peopleg twenty-four made high honors. These people excelled in their studies to achieve an A average. Fifty-five people achieved honors signifying above average work. This year we had two new teachers as class sponsors. Mr. Pignataro and Miss Fisher worked with our class to organize the group, govern through class cabinet, and raise money to begin our class treasury. Danielle Emery and Kris Dulis CABINET. Advisor Mr. Tull expressed its importance as one of the few structures which gives students rec- ognition for their academic excellence. Acceptance was open to all juniors and sen- iors who earned an 87.596 or better academic average and participated in one or more extra- curricular activities. The senior members were honored with a banquet and Senior Award Day program where they received scholarship trophies, pins, and certificates. The Honor Society served the school with a tutoring service and hospitality committee. The Student Government was an organiza- tion designed to improve the school and to promote student relations. This year under advisor Mr. Keith Grant, the student govern- ment considerably increased its activity and involvement. To arouse spirit for the Thanks- giving game, it joined forces with many other clubs to hold a dance. It conducted a Youth Conference in which students and senior citi- zens met to discuss problems shared by the young and the elderly and to close the com- munication gap. Other proiects included job descriptions for officers, a new constitution and monthly reports to the School Board. FHCCS hat's in the Future The Future Health Careers Club consisted of juniors and seniors enlisted in the nursing and dental hygiene courses. Under the direc- tion of Mrs. Falvey, this course prepared the students for post-high school jobs and college learning. F.H.C.C. dealt in therapy of the body, practical nursing, and dental skills. The F,H.C.C.'s many activities included adven- tures to the Montgomery County Community College, visiting the Overbrook School for the Blind, and hosting a bloodmobile. The F.H.C.C. dedicated themselves to duty and humanity. FUTURE HEALTH CAREERS CLUB. FIRST ROW: M. Soltes,,I, Neff, D. Lanphear D Bicer K Campbell L Reider V Sobreslty T. Mack, G. Debbie Lanphear Denise Blcer Debbie Buckley PHS News Has Write Attitude From deep within the walls of P.H.S. behind the closed door of Room 216, a bril- liant staff of creative artists worked diligently on their masterpiece. Together, the twenty young people and their fearless leader, Colo- nel Swavely, toiled on a literary work which would shine in the annals of time as P.H.S. News. The P.H.S. News staff put together six fine issues filled with news, opinion, satire, sports, comedy, and nonsense. While the news was not always good, the opinion, not always agreeable, the satire, comedy, and non- sense, not always funny, and the sports, not always spirited, the staff had a good time try- ing to make it all organized and wordy enough to cover the more than 10,000 words needed to fill each issue. If you had half as much fun reading it as we had writing it, then we had twice as much fun as you. So from the desolate halls and the oasis in the sand known as Room 216, thank you. I.M. P.H.S. 'Mata fit? f Stage Crew Lights Up Our Lives The Drama Club, sponsored by Mrs. Heydt and Mr. Burnett, promoted the fine art of theater in Pottstown High School. Led by president Scott Miller, the club was composed of students of all classes, including members of the junior and senior class plays. In addi- tion to the class plays they presented Drama Night, a group of short skits. They also per- formed individual acts of singing and danc- ing. They enioyed trips to plays and dinner theaters. This group helped promising young actors and actresses pursue their goals. The stage crew was a very important but often unrecognized group in the school. Each time an assembly or activitiy required the use of the auditorium, the stage crew sacrificed their time to help. Under the supervision of Mr. Olivieri, the stage crew set the stage, made backgrounds, and worked the lights, sound system, and projection equipment. 2 1 DRAMA CLUB. FIRST ROW: Mrs. Heydt, T. Seventy-five of them were sophomores. But they They learned that courage was facing who outweighed them by fifty They learned that tired was playing minute of every game - offense, and special teams. They learned that was Coach Butch Leveille. Pottstown's first game of the year came Allentown-Dieruff. Pottstown opened scoring in the first quarter when Bob Sat- scored from the one. Dieruff man- ageo only 8 points in the first quarter against a stubborn Trojan defense. However, in the second quarter the defense began to falter, and the locals went down to defeat 53-6, The same thing was to occur in the next four games. The Trojans' problem was num- bers. Most of the opposing teams had SO-60 playersg the Trojans had barely 4Q, 50 of them sophomores. Most of the players had no opportunity to rest. This lack of depth would take its toll in the latter part of each game. In the sixth game Pottstown traveled to East to play the hapless Vikings whose record was also O-5. In a steady downpour the Tro- jans played three scoreless quarters on the West Chester quagmire. With four minutes left in the contest Mike Favors recovered a Viking fumble on the West Chester fifteen. It could have put the icing on the cake for the Trojans. A facemask penalty gave the ball back to the Vikings who went on to win 6-O. After a loss to Henderson, Pottstown went to Phoenixville to play the first place Phan- toms. The young Trojan defense let the relentless Phantoms' offense manage only 7 points in the first half, but the battle-weary Trojans tired in the second half to lose 28-0. But the boys learned. Points were much harder to score against Pottstown, and the running game started rolling behind return- ing lettermen jeff Green and Ernie McCalvin. Thanksgiving Day they crossed the river to rival O. -I. Roberts. The rain was appropri- ateg the Trojans fought hard, only to lose 34- 6. Roberts' linebacker Kevin Ireson said, I still can't see how they didn't win all season. No way. They hit harder than four or five other teams we played. The .IV team finished with a respectable 5- 5 record, and the freshmen finished 5-4. H J ', ,zine 4 ,,, :fra-1:s,q.fir. si -j, ' fif.7.'::-'ii-tilifdf, ,f , ' - ,. . 'lx-v. The harriers responded with an exciting one-point victory over Great Valley following a disheartening loss to Coatesville. The Trojans were led by senior co-captains Dave jackson and Don Lash, Dave jackson had an outstanding year for Coach Harvey. Their skill, speed, and aggressiveness on the field, along with their undying desire to win, gained them the second place in Ches-Monts. This place was won after a 2-1 victory over Henderson, who was tied with Pottstown for second place. This win brought Pottstown into District l playoff action. The Trojanettes were second to Great Valley in the league, hut they had more wins than Great Valley during District competition, Pottstown's season ended after their second game in Districts when they were defeated by lnterboro. 0-1. They were Lisa Detar, first team offense, ,lane Geyer, second team offenseg and Charlene Ebersole, second team goalie. The junior varsity team was coached by Mrs. Mary Powell. The team's third place was a giant step up from their last place in 1977. All the golfers improved, but the key to the Trojan success was Gregg Schwoyer. Schwoyer had a record average of under 75 strokes per match. His achievements included a record low 65 at Twin Ponds golf course against Boyertown. He was named to the All Ches-Mont team. The team highlighted their season with a victory over Ches-Mont champions Great Valley. They then suffered a tough loss by two strokes to the C-M runner-up Downing- town. The team lost four lettcrmen by the gradu- ation of Gregg Schwoyer, Duane Seybold, Dave Binder, and Todd Daniels. Despite the loss of these outstanding players Coach Davis was optimistic about the 1979 season. Promis- ing golfers returning are Brad Daniels, Scott Sandoe, jeff Shaner, and Mike Ruyak. Coach Davis commented, With improved poise and concentration we should be able to achieve maximum performance next season. GOLF. FIRST ROW: B. Daniels, K. Kabilko, B. Daniels, K. Raneiri, M. Ruyak,j. At the Lower Moreland Holiday Tournament two individual Trojans managed to start and end the competition well, as lightweight Donald Lash and heavyweight, jeff Green became two of the tournament's champions. The Trojans' strength and toughness were tested as they met four of the strongest Ches- Mont teams at the start of their regular sea- son. The result of these matches left the grap- plers with a O-3-1 record. Trojan pride and determination were not injured, as the squad won their next three matches. A very disappointing loss to East may have seemed to have dampened the young squad's spirit, but it bounced back to take on the Bears of Boyertown. The squad put on its best exhibition of wrestling technique, strength and endurance as each and every one of the twelve man line-up gave his best effort for every second that he competed. Unfortu- nately, the Trojans still lost this match to Boyertown which left them with a Ches- Mont record of 4-5-1. This dedicated crew of varsity and junior varsity wrestlers will better its present record, as there were only five senior competitors. Under the direction of coaches Tsakonas, Armato, and Friend, the squad will be pre- pared for its '79-'80 season. This year's varsity contained only one retuming merhbcr, Joanne Kauffman. The junior varsity was composed of many girls who played on the team for the first time. But what the girls lacked in experience, they compensated for in desire and determination. Miss Bechtel took over the coaching position only a few days before the first match. With many hours of discipline and teamwork, she helped the Tro- jancttes complete their season with pride. Together they looked forward to next year with their hopes based on the great number of underclassmen. The Trojanettes participated in a league championship game against St. Pius X and lost a tough game by the score of 46-39. The exciting Trojanettes then entered into district competitions which extended their season into March. A key to their success was an overall strong, consistent team with good support from a well balanced bench. Each girl knew her responsibility whether it was scoring, passing, or rebounding. The Trojanettes were undoubtedly one of the strongest all-around teams in the ChesAMont league. The girls were coached by new coach and teacher Mr. Richard Barletta. ' M '2 .. PH Tennis Team Courts Season With a Net Gain The Pottstown tennis team, under the direction of new head coach Rick Barletta, built a strong squad that surpassed the teams of recent years. The season for the Pottstown netters got off to a late start with Coach Bar- letta leading his basketball team to a District Championship. Once practice started, the team progressed and built a solid young team with experience and court knowledge gained through hard work and determination. The team consisted primarily of undercliissmen with only three graduates. Team captain Todd Daniels held the team together with his leadership and kept morale high throughout the season. Coach Barletta was pleased with the performance of the team. He said that the enthusiasm generated by the players and the leadership made this a highly productive sea- son. y TENNIS. FIRST ROW: T. Since this sport was reintroduced in 1978, there were few veteran upperclassmen. The team was composed mainly of freshmen and sophomores. Miss Whistler was confident that by 1982 they will have two good teams, a varsity and a junior varsity. The Troianettes played a full round of 12 games. Their most challenging opponents were Downingtown, Boyertown, and Coatesville. SOFTBALL. FIRST ROW: K. Toth, P. Walters,j. Ihle,j. Heany, S. Saylor, C. Whitehurst, L. Strickler, C. Ebersole, A. A solid veteran infield of Dennis Kriczky, Mike Kerr, Duane Seybold, and jef- frey Green made an Iron Curtain. With the acquisition of freshman catcher Ron Rein- hart, the pitching battery of Bill Brown and Bob Fine was more powerful than a Sears Die Hard. The outfield was like a Venus fly trap. The offense was supplied by the ever depend- able David Albright and jim Kerr. The junior varsity squad turned in a fine ,Annuity season in their own right. Under the coaching of Mr, Saylor, the Trojan j.v.'s ate up ground balls and cleaned off the plate, The freshmen team had a good year under first year coach jim Edwards, 'llifltfillf B R ilT'iftf 'f 2 lf' 4 W??f4fiiEE??l??r y y .g,jg:g1,.:43:..: A fi R ' '4 9- ,, , X L. 2 z:Q.s - -1:ig,,,i,,5.g 2.11 f -vfil at . .
