Nbr- 1' ug 5 All Home Economics Courses Blend The Ingredients For Family Living Family-minded students of P.H.S. had the opportunity to be home economics majors. They studied family living and marriage. They learned the basic and advanced skills of meal planning, meal preparation, and sewing. All stu- dents could choose the electives of cooking, clothing, or bachelor living. Bachelor living was very popular with the liberated males. They began a sewing course by making chef's aprons and practicing simple tailoring. They then learned how to cook and to do laundry. They then progressed to consumer economics. They emerged polished bachelors, well able to fend for themselves.

The Student Body Of PHS Completes Its Education With The Academics All students in all courses studied many of the same subjects in order to reach graduation. All students studied some form of English, history, mathematics, and science. The form of the subjects studied depended upon the type of course in which the individual was enrolled. The aca- demic subjects were tailored to meet both the needs of the people and the requirements of their vocational courses. The academic subjects were the basis of a broad, well- rounded education. Trade Industrial Students Build Around 12 Experienced Teachers Pottstown High School's vocational department en- rolled 696 students, who represented two-thirds of the student body. Three hundred seventy students were in the business education department, which offered clerical practices, bookkeeping, secretarial, and data processing areas. Three hundred twenty-six students were in the trade industrial and home economics departments. Appli- ance repair, mechanical drafting, wood shop, machine shop, automobile mechanics, electronics, health assis- tance, and food services were offered in the trade indus- trial course. Home economics offered homemaking, cloth- ing, and bachelor living, a popular course for boys. A work training program, jointly supervised by teachers and employers, allowed 63 students to learn on the job while continuing their academic courses which fled to graduation. Follow-up studies made of alumni found that after graduation a high percentage of vocational students remained in the vocational field for which they were trained in our comprehensive high school. if-. wg,-W ,V 1 W
