Each piece is an entity . . . and yet is ofsucha shape as to fit perfectly in union with others. Each piece is a part of the larger whole. Unified, the puzzle has meaning and Beauty which the separate pieces lack. The whole-is, greater than the sum of its parts. Nine hundred -and twenty-three parts come together to form Pottstown Highlt1S6hool. Their most outstanding characteristic is their diversi- ty. They are diverse in size, shape, and color . . . in nationality, religion, talent, ability, and char- acter . . . in needs, hopes, and dreams. Each person is unique . . . guifeach, with pary- ing degrees of effort and loyahy, unites 'with others to form the whole. .E V Unified, Pottstown High School finds her pur- pose and her meaning in her diversity. As head basketball coach for 13 years, he coached each game to win, but he also taught each athlete to train his body to obey his mind, to train his emotions to obey his will, to enjoy the beauty of a well played game, to play by the rules, and to respect others as himself. He coached to build clean men. He has run Pottstown High School by these same princi- ples. As an administrator he dispensed advice, supplies, citations, bandaids, whacks, kleenex, sympathy, wit, and wisdom. He conducted evaluations, elections, fire drills, bomb searches, assemblies, frenzy parties, and frenzied class meetings. His door has always been open to students and faculty alike. He has really cared about us, and he has always respected our confidences. If a friend is defined as one who knows our faults but likes us anyway, then he has truly been our friend. His outstanding qualities are two: his sense of total commitment to the students and faculty of Pottstown High and his keen sense of humor which reveals his constant enjoyment of life. An era ends at Pottstown High School and a grateful school and community join in saying, You're a good man, Charlie Brown. It is with the deepest respect, gratitude, and affection that we dedicate the 1976 Troiad to . , . Mr. Charles E. Brown. :- sy' Q-J Q 'm '+ WWW vi'- 'N 9,- ,gg 4 MM ? 1 fs dvi: , 45 cf' as adn , gi ,Ar 34' R '1 Q .eg 2 A 1 5 X 1: 1 I 1 , in rw- - +- gf L... The most advanced business course was secretarial. These girls developed their skills in typ- ing, shorthand, record keeping, and operating business machines. Three years of accounting were offered to the students majoring in bookkeeping. Students enrolled in the clerical curriculum learned general office skills and procedures. One of the most interesting courses that busi- ness offered was data processing. This curriculum was carried out in the Administration Building from 7 a.m. to 10:30. Key punch operation and computer programming were the techniques taught. - The business classrooms were replete with enthusiastic students who became proficient in their skills and proce- dures. The Student Body Of PHS Completes Its Education With The Academics All students in all courses studied many of the same subjects in order to reach graduation. All students studied some form of English, history, mathematics, and science. The form of the subjects studied depended upon the type of course in which the individual was enrolled. The aca- demic subjects were tailored to meet both the needs of the people and the requirements of their vocational courses. The academic subjects were the basis of a broad, well- rounded education. They studied family living and marriage. They learned the basic and advanced skills of meal planning, meal preparation, and sewing. All stu- dents could choose the electives of cooking, clothing, or bachelor living. Bachelor living was very popular with the liberated males. They began a sewing course by making chef's aprons and practicing simple tailoring. They then learned how to cook and to do laundry. They then progressed to consumer economics. They emerged polished bachelors, well able to fend for themselves. Trade Industrial Students Build Around 12 Experienced Teachers Pottstown High School's vocational department en- rolled 696 students, who represented two-thirds of the student body. Three hundred seventy students were in the business education department, which offered clerical practices, bookkeeping, secretarial, and data processing areas. Three hundred twenty-six students were in the trade industrial and home economics departments. Appli- ance repair, mechanical drafting, wood shop, machine shop, automobile mechanics, electronics, health assis- tance, and food services were offered in the trade indus- trial course. Home economics offered homemaking, cloth- ing, and bachelor living, a popular course for boys. A work training program, jointly supervised by teachers and employers, allowed 63 students to learn on the job while continuing their academic courses which fled to graduation. Follow-up studies made of alumni found that after graduation a high percentage of vocational students remained in the vocational field for which they were trained in our comprehensive high school. if-. wg,-W ,V 1 W M' . -4 'F Y ,J ,XT L ' ' 6 29 1 . We dedicated three years to achieve our goal. We can look back on the dances, the hoagie sales, bake sales, candle sales, the donkey basketball game, the volleyball mara- thon, the car washes - so many things that built a foun- dation of memories. We can remember the anxiously awaited day we flew to Disney World. We can remember how we realized that our senior year was almost at an end and we looked forward to graduation. It was the leader- ship of our sponsors, officers, and cabinet that gave us the Spirit of '76. Some of us had fears and regretsg others had ambitions and goals to achieve. There had been pressures and times when we felt like giving up . . . but we didn't. We were the Class of 1976 . . . :,..,..,...4nr-Q-'en 'g-2353 ', . 1 iii? CABINET. FIRST ROW: B. Santiago, D. Among the fund- raising activities were the traditional bake sales, hoagie sales, and a rummage sale. They sponsored a roller skat- ing party at C C Skate Ranch, an ice skating party at the Hill School, and the junior class play. One of the more interesting activities was a donkey basketball game with - our juniors opposing the O.J. Roberts' juniors. Pottstown thrashed O.J. 16-12. The highlight of the year was the Junior Prom, Midnight at the Oasis, held at Gilberts- ville Fire Company. CABINET. FIRST ROW: J. Martin, S. Bakay, D. Fry, R. Hartman, K. Fox, W. McCann, T. Led by faculty advi- sor Mr. Arthur Green, this international organization of high school boys set out to make plans for a great year. President Glenn Faust guided the 24 members through their various projects. For the school, the Key Club spon- sored the 1975 Homecoming, the annual Thanksgiving bonfire, and Movie Night. The club assisted its parent organization, the Kiwanis Club, in Peanut Day, which benefits childrens charities. The Christmas fruit cake sale, a candy sale, the annual state convention, along with many other activities, kept the club busy throughout the year. Using the idea of service, Key Club membership helped build the leaders of the future. ,H I . A 'X f ' N3 r'm.L4v S iv-I-D , ,f-, , , 'X 15 -:N 2.3 if f 'f ,,,..-.j ...f 44. Clubbers Encounter New Nursing Techniques The Future Health Careers Club was an organization available to those girls enrolled in the medical assistants course. Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Marlene Falvey, the F.H.C.C. had a year full of activities. The year was highlighted by an open house in February where family and friends were welcomed to learn what takes place in the field of health services. They toured the dental area and health suite and saw movies and filmstrips featuring the F.H.C.C. members involved in their clinical work. At Christmas the club took presents to the elders at Mana- tawny Manor and sang carols. Throughout the year they took a variety of field trips to nursing oriented hospitals and colleges including the University of Pennsylvania, Montgomery County Community College, and Thomas Jefferson Hospital. French And Spanish Organizations Linh Together In Cultural Projects The French Club combined efforts with its newly cre- ated partner, the Spanish Club, to compile a year of suc- cessful projects. In achieving the goals of extending their knowledge of French and Spanish cultures, the clubs pre- sented plays, prepared foreign dishes, and participated in games such as soccer and boules. To encourage interest in the cultural aspects of France, the French Club sponsored a poster contest for their junior high amis Cfriendsj. The Spanish Club experienced foreign customs with monthly presentations which included a bull fight and meeting a young Mexican gentleman who spoke only in Spanish about life in his country. On February 2 the Club went to see a group of Spanish Tunas or strolling troubadours who sang and performed dances. Members of the French Club highlighted the year with a trip to the Rodin Muse- um in Philadelphia. To conclude the year, the respective clubs visited restaurants where they enjoyed traditional Spanish and French dishes. FRENCH CLUB. FIRST ROW: F. Thompson, S. Staverosky, K. Fox, J. Dilliplane, V. Sue Lasky was placed in charge of a committee who hand-sewed a 13 star flag to hang in front of our school for 1976. Finally in June, Dana Haag made a motion to adjourn the meeting so she could go home and watch her soap opera. The motion was seconded by Barb Big. Everyone ran out the door of 229 just missing the sigh emanating from Mrs. Yekenchik's lips as she shook her head and waved good-bye. 110 Trojan Girls Let PHS Teams Know That's The Way - Uh- Huh - We Like It A new organization emerged in Pottstown High School this year. Under the dedicated supervision of Miss Angela DiPietro, the Trojan Girls raised the spirit of P.H.S. They worked throughout the football season painting posters, decorating the lockers of players, and cheering at frenzy parties. Their support of the cheerleaders and all athletic teams provided some of the most enthusiastic pep rallies ever experienced by P.H.S. students. They continued to promote the athletic program throughout the winter and spring sports seasons. r. ..,,,s, I 11- 65 ' S J If -k TROJAN GIRLS. FIRST ROW: K. LaScala, S. Lucas, F. Thompson, B. In additional to the annual Christmas concert on December 21, they per- formed a Christmas concert at the Elks for the Business and Professional Women's Association. Other activities included a Founders' Day Banquet on February 5, a con- cert for the MORA Club at the YMCA on February 19, and the annual spring concert in Davenport Auditorium on May 8. The choir was invited to participate in a county sponsored concert in celebration of the bicentennial. The concert was held at Valley Forge and featured the Potts- town Symphony Orchestra. Three choir members - Andy Nodolski, Rycki Harvey, t . t and Nari Echer - distinguished themselves by gaining recognition in the Southeastern District Chorus, Upper Division. The combinedtefforts and talent of each individ- ual choir member helped contributeto another successful year for the P.H.S. choir. t f Q - i,2f2f1gQQ31c1 f ms fx - R it L e 51 if i i. . Trojan Linksmen Putt Together Exceptional Undefeated Season Exactly what is a linksman? A man who makes chains? A man who hunts lynx? No, it's a golfer! and Pottstown High had a team that was unreal. They coasted to a Ches- Mont title, paving the way for the remainingsport squads. Under the superb coaching of player-coach Mr. William McCabe, the consistent Trojan team won each match by an average of 42 strokes! That plus the fact that seven different men were low medalist at one time proves the great balance of Mr. McCabe's '75 team. The Trojan seven travelled to a tough Waynesboro Area High School for their opener. Waynesboro was supposedly tops in the state, but the experienced Trojans rose to the occasion and whipped them 401-423 flower score winsj. In another non-league match the linksmen had no problem in beating Cumberland Valley 401-460. Then the seven opened their Ches-Mont season against a tough, veteran Falcon squad from neighboring Potts- grove. The Trojans chipped and putted their way to a 402- 416 victory. That was the first stepping stone toward their goal. Next Boyertown travelled to Brookside fwhere P.H.S. golfers were almost unbeatablej and lost hands down 411-447. The Patriots of Great Valley were the next victims of McCabe,s maulers. Again the Trojans coasted to a 409-445 triumph. In an exhibition nine hole match the P.H.S. drivers tuned up for their next C-M match by tripping the Hill School squad 206-222. Then the Trojans travelled to a tough, sand trap, water filled course at Spring-Ford. They needed buckets and swim suits, but still came out ahead 431-471. They came home again against an unfortunate Henderson team. As in football, the Trojans broke a re- cord while competing against the Warriors. They cracked a course record by pummelling the visitors 392-459. Then came the usually tough Red Raiders from Coates- ville. The Trojans drove their way to a 406-444 win. Three straight away matches followed. They beat Owen J. 202- 221 in a match shortened by rain. They smoked Phoenix- ville 408-441. Next they breezed to a 323-370 victory over East in a match called for darkness. In their finale the linksmen arrived at their goal by beating Downingtown 416-478. They ended 13-0 and Ches-Mont champs. Many post-season honors came to them. Five men were named to the All-Ches-Mont first team: seniors Steve Steinmetz with 81.1 average, Jim Kohler with 83.7, Jeff Mast with 83.5, Ken Petro with 84.5, and junior Ted Smith with 80.4 average. Miss Whistler coached the squad of nine seniors, eight juniors, and three sophomores. The nine graduating mem- bers were Rose Buser, Nari Ecker, Sally Galamba, Pat Killian, Carol Righter, Kathy Rupert, Sue Stetler, Cidra Thompson, and Donna Wynings. Team captain Carol Righter was honored for her outstanding efforts by being selected to the All-ChesMont team. '- Mak. l Exciting Trojan Football Kicks Off ,75 Athletics With 8-4 Season After P.H.S. lost 29 seniors through graduation, local fans were leary of the 1975-76 season,' but the Trojans emerged as the dark horse of the C-M race. Dream Game II was a game which pitted two teams which were both inexperienced and unsure of themselves. St. Pius X held on to a three point lead. But the surprising Trojans bounced back against a very big Downingtown team. The Trojans edged the Whippets 18-6 on a muggy Saturday afternoon. Then the P-town 11 met Coatesville. This was the first real showing of Howard Jones. He displayed his great running by gaining over 200 yards, while the Trojan defense played like an iron curtain. Next the Trojans met a tough Emmaus squad who were leading their league. The combined running of Jones and the passing of QB Dave Reidenouer to Frankie Clayton and Mark Galamba led the offensive charge. A total de- fensive effort held Emmaus to under 120 total yards. Pottstown then traveled to Phoenixville, who had been plagued by a teachers' strike. In a tough game the Trojans scrambled to a 14-0 victory. This game was won in the trenches with the unheralded linemen playing a great game. After an unfortunate accident caused the death of Da- vid Freed, SpringFord traveled to Grigg Field. Beep- Beep Jones' long TD runs hurt the spirited Rams. The defense came up with several big plays headed by George Wise, Todd Detar, and Ron Gumbarge. In the Mud Bowl of -1975 Pottstown traveled to Boyertown. In the monsoon rains the Trojans played a mistake free game. Frank Clayton picked a fumble and ran 99 yards for the first TD. Then the Trojans put their ball control offense in gear, shutting out the Bears 20-0, holding down the highly tout- ed Pete Madeja. Unfortunately the Warriors of Henderson rolled into town. They ran into a team which was steamrolling. The Trojans decimated Henderson 31 -0. Detar bulled his way for nearly 100 yards while Jones highstepped his way to a C-M record of 322 yards. Once again the line opened those big holes, giving Reidenouer time to complete his passes. Next the sky-high Falcons came to town looking for an upset, but the Trojans squeezed out a 13-6 victory. Mark Galamba's big interception and run for a TD iced the cake for the Trojans. Then all the problems started for the league leading Trojans. The Patriots of Great Valley held the Trojan offense to zero points and held on to a field goal for a 3-0 loss. Mistakes and penalties hurt the squad against a fired up East team. After Mark Galamba ran back the opening kickoff for a TD, things went down hill. A blocked punt and a fumbled punt, plus some disputed calls, led to the .J ,- g 1, gf . 5.4! K . xv ' ,J H, . J .V , . Edwards Spurs His Spunky Wrestlers To Winning Year The Pottstown wrestling machine not only started oi. under the direction of a new coach, but they also started the year with a big win over Harriton, 37-21. This was a preview of the rest of the season. Jim Edwards advanced from the junior high to take over the position of head coach of the high school, expect- ing to find a young, inexperienced squad. What he found instead was a group of young men with hustle, endurance, and drive, He led them, with the expert assistance of John Armato and Jim Tsakonas, to an 8-6 season. The JV's ended with a 9-4-1 record. After the victory over Harriton, the Trojans came away disappointed from the next three matches - Wilson, Spring-Ford, and Downingtown. However, the team found champions in sophomore Tracy Queen and veteran Jace Ingham, as they were champions at 98 and 119 in the Norristown Tournament. Dave Garner took first place at 98 in the JV tourney. Then the thriller of the year came - a 25-24 win over Pottsgrove. The next five of seven matches came up with victories for Pottstown until the disappointing loss to Owen J., 31-20. The year ended with a victory over Read- ing, which seemed to symbolize the success of the year as a whole. In the Sectionals. the Pottstown wrestling squad placed fourth in the overall team standings behind fine perfor- mances of Kim Fox, who wrestled to a third place, Tracy Queen and Ron Gumbarge, who lost only to the champi- ons, and Jace Ingham and Glenn Faust who were the champions. Only four Trojans emerged from the Districts victorious - Jace, Glenn, and Ron copped seconds and Tracy notched a third place. These competitors travelled to the Regionals. Ingham was the sole Trojan to place and travel to the States for the second consecutive year. Congratulations to the Trojans and coaches for an ex- citing season. .A 'I , 4 W 1 1 5' 1 1 151 ' J 24 is W as 1. - .s T .. . lv . Fast break teams to death! That's exactly what happened. The Trojans opened the season with two non-league games with St. Pius and Governor Mifflin. As evidence of early season play, the cagers came up with two sloppily played victories. Next the Trojan five opened the Ches-Mont season with a victory over O.J. Roberts 54-47. Then a very stubborn Pottsgrove team travelled to our home court. The Falcons came up on the short end 57-45. The Trojan bouncers travelled to nearby Boyertown for a very big game. The Bears held on for a one point victory 44-43. Pottstown got back on the right foot with a very well played victory over Great Valley 76-45. The huge Red Raiders came to town for the annual showdown of the C-M league. The game was everything that everyone expected and a little more. Coatesville squeaked out a 74-71 heartbreaker. The Trojans travelled to Henderson for a very exciting game. The cagers hooped a 77-68 victory. The Trojan five reeled off four straight victories over East, Dowingtown, Spring-Ford, and Phoenixville to close the first half 8-2. After a week off, the Trojans came back with a victory over the Wildcats 57-48. Another tough game with Potts- grove came unexpectedly, but they overcame the Falcons 65-62. The big game with the first half champs, Boyer- town, saw the Trojans destroy the Bears 47-33. Two straight upset losses knocked the Trojans out of conten- tion for the second half. The Warriors from Henderson leaped into our gym for a tough game. The big five won 52- 44. The Trojans closed out the season with four straight wins, assuring them of a play-off berth. The surprising run and gun Trojans were very satisfied with their season. Barry Robinson, transfer Reggie Oliver, and Bryan Lacey provided good outside shooting. Robert Harris, James Jackson, and Dave Reidenouer provided inside scoring, tough defense, and rebounding. Coaches Fritz, Hallman, and Yersak were congratulated for a job well done. . Following that they played St. Pius at home. The game was very rough and very physical. Sue Bennett scored 10 points with Rose Buser adding 10 rebounds. The final outcome was 47-21 in favor of the Lionettes. Un- abashed by these two losses, the Trojanettes streaked to the top of the league, winning six consecutive games against Spring-Ford, Henderson, Phoenixville, Coates- ville, Great Valley, and East. The most exciting of this series was the game with Great Valley. It was neck-and-neck until Pottstown won by one point, beating Valley for the first time in ten years. The team was excellent, playing the best basketball of the past ten years. The girls were exceptionally spirited, ending the season with a league record of 7-3. The high scorers were Sue Bennett with a shooting record of 121 and Rose Buser with a record of 112. The high rebounders were Rose Buser with 104 and Cathy Zawaski with a record of 68. The JV team did well also. Their league record was 6-4, again the best in ten years. The high scorers on the JV team were Wanda King with 114 and Jennifer Jones with 82. The team finished this outstanding season third in the league. VARSITY. FIRST ROW: N. Ecker, C. Righter, R. Buser, K. Rupert, F. Price, W. King. SECOND ROW: R. Wedde, C. Zawaski, S. But the Trojan nine weathered the storm and won many games in '76, Returning two year letterman Dave Reidenouer plus lettermen Kevin Strange, Steve Steinmetz, Dave Via, Todd Hetrick, and Mark Galamba headed the field of starters and leaders. Pottsgrove's and Boyer- town's girls were challenging as usual, and Spring-Ford's boys were extremely strong. The strength of the girls' team lay in their ten seniors. 'V , A ffff3if 150 ga ike Kulp For more than 200 years America has been building its history . . . men, events, laws, wars . . . star-spangled, heart-throbbing successes and hang-dog, ignominious failures. Day by day men lived and worked, and from their lives his- tory emerged. Those individual men probably could see only their own roles. Could they know the proud sum of their efforts? Did they know they were building a free society of free men? What special significance does the bicenten- nial hold for the Class of '76? What does the bicentennial mean? It meansthat I am proud to be an American. I am proud 'to salute my flag. In a voice that is loud and firm and sure, I am proud to pledge allegiance to my country. It is not perfect, but it is a country strong enough to tolerate dissent . . . honest enough to examine its faults in public . . . confident enough to live with an uncensored press. I have more freedom than any other man on the face of the earth. I am proud to be an American . . . without any qualifying adjectives. America is not anything if it consists of each of us. It is something only if it consists of all of us banded together in a common enterprise. With the blessing of God, that common enter- prise is to build a country of wisdom, of peace, of liberty, and of union. The bicentennial is a rebirth of Union. I From many, one.
