Vile started the year by electing ollicers. choosing our class motto, colors, and flower. We sponsored the Hrst prom ever given by a sophomore class. A pie and cake sale followed, and then came Color Day. in which we took part by' decorating the third floor hall. Among the dances which we sponsored were a square dance, the May Dance, and a Farewell Dance. As juniors we were even more eager to make the year a happy one. We began by' holding a square dance and a spaghetti supper. The biggest event was the combined May' Dance and ,lunior Prom. It was one of the most successful in recent years and featured the coronation of the May' Queen and a May' Pole Dance. Our last year had arrived. and what a busy' one it was. We began our activities by' sponsoring a Welcome Dance for the sophomores. Then came the excitement of senior class pictures and the class play. ln January' we had another square dance and selected announcements and name cards. We were diflerent from other classes because we decided that the boys would wear blue gowns and caps with white tassels: and the girls. white gow ns and caps with blue tassels at Commencement. Our last year was almost ended when the time for our class trip to New York City arrived. We were thrilled by' the famous places which we visited in this great city. The fun and excitement of Class Night. at which time we presented our class gift to the school. came next. The Commencement Dance and finally Commencement ended our happy years at P. ll. S. This crew of twelve boys took full charge of the scenery. the lighting. the curtains, and any other equipment used in the assemblies. The boys handled the stage equipment for school plays. pep rallies, and concerts. Tn addition to the school programs. the boys assisted in setting the stage for concerts sponsored by civic organizations. ln preparation for ai large performance the boys worked on shifts with about three boys on each shift. This system enabled all of the crew to share in the work and gave them all a rest at intervals. 'r FOUTBALL Struggling through a schedule packed with powerful opponents, Pottstown Highis willing young Trojans finally' finished the season with a slate of five wins and four defeats. Bothered mainly by inexperience and slumps, the team played brilliantly in one game, then followed the next week by erroneous actions. Possibly' of the nine games battled by the Trojans and their foes, the Norristown fray was the most exciting. Norristown came to Franklin Field favored by three to four touchdowns, but after the first hall Pottstown led by a comfortable thirteen points. During the third quarter Norristown picked up a touchdown and an extra point, and the final period opened with wildly cheering fans rooting Pottstown toward a victory. Suddenly' the foe struck pay' dirt again, but miraculously the extra point was blocked. flowever, with just two minutes remaining, Blockson, the Norristown fullback, tossed a 50 yard pass to one of his halfbacks, who crossed the goal line standing upg thus Norristown won 20 to 13, and the gallant Trojans tasted a bitter defeat. Statistically speaking, the Trojans scored a total of 122 points compared to 125 for their opponents. Individually, captain Stan Chaplin directed the offense. He led the team with 50 points and some 300 yards of total yardage. Two outstandin feats of Cha lin were his 88-y ard runback ol a Phoenixville kickoff, g P . and an UT-yard return of a punt against Coatcsyille. At the seasonis close Stan Chaplin, Steve Chernesky, Bill Carrow, and Bob Sutton were admirably rewarded for their excellent work during the year by being chosen on the first and second teams of the Ches-Mont League. Captain Chaplin also was picked as one of the backs on the Pennsylvania state second team. ,B G we fi t lr ' -271' 89,1611 71- W2 tl t t 57 va l'1l:s'l' Run: ll, Honra-. .I. Kirk. ,l. Ro-tt:-n. R. Eight fellows participated in the ,51 season's activities under their capable coach, Mr. William James. Although the squad concluded the year with a record of no wins and four defeats, it must be said that the boys had an enjoyable time getting into shape for the meets. Each meet consisted of a 2l,Q-mile cross country run in which five members from each team were entered. lncidentally, the Pottstown course winds through much of the northern part of the borough: and it takes a lot of hard running to cover it in good time. The best time for this home distance was set by a Coatesville lad this season. He traversed it in a record time of 12:45. For Pottstown Earl Rodgers is tops with 13:44. This sport is definitely growing, and in future years Mr. James has the ambition of coach- ing some winning teams. Sixty-six HOCKEY :Xlthough the Trojanettes practiced hard and long under the direction of their new coach. Miss Marilyn Ohlman. the varsity team ended the 1951 season defeated in seven games. lt seemed that no matter how determined to win the girls were. the opponent was just a little more determined or experienced. Shirley' Weikel was high scorer on the varsity Trojanettes. while Peggy' Himes maneuvered some very fine plays as captain. The junior varsity team did much hetter and ended the season with a record of four wins. one tie. and two losses. Many of these girls were well trained to provide a nucleus for the 1952 team. The Rutter twins provided most of the winning goals for the junior varsity' as well as a lot of confusion. especially for the referees. since they played side lyy side. Marcia Baylor. This vear's tussle decided the Ches-Mont League championship in favor of the Raiders. as the gallant lads of Pottstown tasted a hitter defeat. 54-50. This final hattle displayed all the fighting spirit which led the Trojans to so many victories this season. Time and again. throughout the year, the hardy fellows fought from behind and certain defeat to achieve a glorious victory. 1'lowcver. at the Palestra. Coatesville managed to end all dreams of a championship among Pottstown fans. Tile season's record was still an excellent 19 wins and 5 defeats. During the course of this successful year the Trojans set several new records. Their 98 points against Bridgeport surpassed the previous single game mark. Also their 248 assists. field goal average of 358, foul shooting average of .627 and their 66.5 points per game were all new records. These achievements were some solace for their loss of the Ches-Mont league crown. individually. Dave llicketts led the team with 510 markers: thus he and his hrother llit-ku are the only Trojans to top the 500 goal. Pottstown finislicd fourth. At the conclusion of Pottstown llivlfs swimming season. the team had a record of seven C7 D IiG defeats and only one victory. Though practicing very hard three times a week. the fellows were just not able to cope on even terms with their strong adversaries. llowcver. the boys still had a good time swimming in the agreeahly warm Y.M.C.A. pool. while most people shivered outdoors in the mid-winter weather. A severe blow to Mr. Yocomis squad occurred when they lost their number one man. Ray Salinger. lle dislocated his right shoulder in a basketball game. which sidelined him the rest ol the season. Nevertheless. the P.H.S. coach received some satisfaction from seeing two other lads. Dick Hiddeinen and Charles Funk. winning constantly in their events. In fact. Dick took a second place award in the District Meet in backstroke. The one big conciliatory fact was that the 1951-52 team was composed mainly of fresh- men and sophomores, who will return next year: thus forming the nucleus of perhaps a better swimming aggregation. Assistant Coach BA EBALL The 751 baseball season went down in Pottstown High School history as being one of the best since 1938. The team not only won fourteen out of sixteen games, but they also annexed the Ches-Mont League championship. It was a well-rounded team that took to the diamond for Pottstown High, and, according to Coach Edward Good. it was one of the most cooperative teams he had coached in years. The wins were mainly due to the outstanding pitching of ,less Baro and Mike Kriczky. Baro and Kriczky had eight and six wins, respectively, with no losses. ln the same order they also had ninety-one and sixty-four strikeouts apiece. The only extra-inning game of the season was the one with Bridgeport, which lasted fourteen innings and ended in a scoreless tie. 1951 SEASON SCORES Lansdale 0 Pottstown 6 Downington 0 Pottstown Lansdale- 0 Pottstown 0 Bridgeport 0 Pottstown llritlgcport 3 Pottstown -1 We-st Cht-stvr I Pottstown Wa-st Cln-stvr 3 Pottstown 22 lie-rwyn 2 Pottstown Spring City .1 Pottstown 4 Phoenixville 2 Pottstown licrwyn 0 Pottstown 1 Coatesville l Pottstown Pho:-nixvillv . 3 Pottstown lo Downingtown 2 Pottstown Coatcsvilln- ll Pottstown l Doylr-stown l Pottstown Senfltlj'-fo 5 tl H 5 I4 2 In 3 lll' OFTBALL btt Pon on on on on Pon rm tt town town tow n town town town town town town 19ml NL KNOX Nt ORPN N rin 1 nh I ppfr Nlerion Xnntuill North lou ntrx Phor nixullf 1 on hohoc lt n North 1 ow ntrx X Q I lo ron l on rtow n The h1ghQp1r1tml TrojanetteQ opened the 1911 Qoftlnall QeaQon with long hircl piactiu llldllt of them in rainx weather hut Qtlll the girl kept up their lighting Qplrlt ancl cleternnnation At the CloQe of the QPEIQOII their reeorcl Qhowecl foul wlnQ fiie loQQeQ, anfl 153 runs QLOI'tCl in mm UameQ l ltHQdlll Illt'lll0Ilt' wele prouded by ,Ioue llall Q Ellllllglllg antics, Patty Crow Q abllxtx HH ratrher ,lox flenn Q Qwlft pitching Sue la HoQe Q '1lTllllX at Q9l0llfl haQe, Shirley Welkel alwax Nllllllllg blow in the outfield Clauflla Lllclcer Q trouble in QPQIIIV hecauQe of that hat Ann aml Carol Rutter Q roathlng at the hases, Marcia Baxlol llftlllllglllg tala nt aQ pltmhei Slllfltt ltflllllllgttl' Q fielchng ahllltx and the Qensatlonal 40 J win ox er COI1QllOhOLkPIl Nlbllld kurt! llolort Vldniplfr Nuova Row Nu an Tlnklnr Bernice Kowach Clorla Nlact Carol Rutter Claudia Flultfr BOIIHIL -X li Ann Rutter w N rian lf we ua: 1 nn axwf N nr 4 x tl Dori N ilmom l'l11d If 1 Ylenuel ,lore Hall .L..,.1. 91 1-xfx Ps :Ili 3- ,P and l'f Q 3 fp ' g I' . -l Q ' 9 v ' A It 21 lj Q ' 34 , ' I' 1- 5 lj Q . 29 ii f - ll l' Q ' 6 f - T l' Q -Li I Q e 5 A - 16 Q 1 V- 5 ss P Q ' 6 V-Q 3 ttsg - I0 l'o Q ' 3 l ' ' ' 26 '4 -5 ' ' ', S , M 4. ,S ,' .
